NFL: An Analysis of the 3-Horse Race for the AFC Championship

The Ravens are reminiscent of two modern-era NFL teams?the 1970s Rams and 1990s Steelers?in that they showed remarkable consistency over a period of years, finishing with records among the best in the league during the regular season.??

However, come playoff time, the shortcomings of the two teams (most specifically lacking a franchise QB) led to playoff disappointments. However, both the Rams and Steelers of the era finally did break through and win a conference championship, although they lost the Super Bowl (albeit to dynasty-level teams in competitive games).??

The Ravens have been knocking on the door for years and seem well positioned to finally follow in the steps of the 1979 Rams and 1995 Steelers to win the conference championship.

?

Why the Ravens Should Win the AFC

The 2011 Ravens finally overcame the hump of the Steelers, sweeping them in the season series for the first time since 2006. The inability to overcome Pittsburgh has forced the Ravens into Wild Card games and playing on the road in the playoffs.??

With the tie-breaker in hand and a schedule almost as (statistically) easy as the Patriots, the Ravens are in control of their destiny to finally earn a top seed and a bye week. The Ravens have a great mix of playoff experience, veteran leadership (the only team in the league featuring two ?sure-fire? first ballot Hall of Fame players? Ed Reed and Ray Lewis), overall talent and a genuine hunger. There is something to be said for a team that has tasted postseason success over several years but has fallen short and has extra desire to win a championship.

?

Why the Ravens Will Not Win the AFC

The Ravens' most potent offensive weapon is running back Ray Rice. They have a team that would be more ideally designed if it were 2001-2005, the pre-Goodell era league. In particular, since 2007 only two Super Bowl participants have featured a running back with over 1,000 yards and only one (2009 Saints? No. 6) finished with a Top 10-ranked rushing game.?

While the Ravens' statistical offensive balance at a glance would seem to indicate they are not as reliant on the running game as they are the passing game (No. 15 in passing, No. 27 in rushing), a closer look at their games reveals that in games where Ray Rice is prolific, the Ravens do well, and in games in which he has been held in check, the Ravens have been vulnerable and needed late defensive breakdowns by their opponents to win.?

Joe Flacco is a solid QB, but unremarkable and inconsistent. He does not do anything particularly ?special? and that is a problem in a league that is pass-heavy?Flacco is going to have to raise the level of his game and do so in the extreme pressure of the NFL playoffs. ?

Despite his 4-3 playoff record, Flacco?s actual playoff performance has been far from stellar?where by comparison the Ravens' top AFC competition features QBs who by the same points early in their careers, turned in some spectacular playoff performances and won a Super Bowl, but have repeated the experience to the tune of seven total appearances and five Super Bowl wins among them.?

Streep, tipped for glory, says Oscars still matter (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? She has been nominated for an Academy Award 16 times, a record for any performer, and won twice, but to Meryl Streep, the golden statuette still matters.

The 62-year-old first attended the annual awards ceremony as a contender more than 30 years ago, when she was up for a supporting role honor in "The Deer Hunter".

The following year she won that honor for "Kramer vs. Kramer" and scooped the best actress prize with the 1982 Holocaust film "Sophie's Choice".

Since then Streep has been back as a nominee 12 times, each time leaving empty-handed.

Now the "Devil Wears Prada" star is a frontrunner again for her portrayal of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady".

Asked in an interview on Thursday if she still cared about the Oscars, she replied: "Sadly it still matters.

"It's so exciting, it really is. I remember the first time I went and (Laurence) Olivier was here and I was next to Gregory Peck and Bette Davis was behind me," Streep told BBC Radio.

"I mean, I've been going to that thing for many years but it's still the one."

She described The Iron Lady, in which she portrays Thatcher both at the height of her powers and as an old, forgetful woman looking back on her life, as a "Lear for girls", a reference to Shakespeare's tragedy "King Lear".

"I said it secretly, I said, 'you know what this is? This is Lear for girls'. It's concerned with the endgame and how power diminishes, how we let go of things, and that's the part that really interested me."

Streep added that tackling such a controversial figure in politics who still divides British public opinion was daunting.

"The policies that she put forward were shared by a number of people in the Conservative Party at that time, but it's how they're communicated.

"And was it (former French President Francois) Mitterrand that said she had the mouth of Marilyn Monroe and the eyes of Caligula."

9 men deny plot to mount London bomb attacks (AP)

LONDON ? Nine men have denied plotting to launch bomb attacks on landmarks including Britain's Parliament and busy shopping areas.

The men were detained in several British cities Dec. 21 in the country's largest counterterrorism raids for two years.

The British suspects, aged between 20 and 29, pleaded not guilty Friday to preparing for acts of terrorism and conspiring to cause explosions.

Prosecutors accuse the men of agreeing on targets, discussing materials and methods, carrying out reconnaissance, attending operational meetings and downloading and researching files "containing practical instruction for a terrorist attack."

Several also are accused of having copies of the al-Qaida magazine Inspire.

They are due to stand trial Jan. 23 at London's Woolwich Crown Court.

S.Africa: 1st class graduates from Winfrey school (AP)

HENLEY-ON-KLIP, South Africa ? Mpumi Nobiva was raised by her grandmother in a neighborhood beset by poverty and crime after her mother died of AIDS. Now one of the first to graduate from Oprah Winfrey's school, she is headed to college in North Carolina.

Winfrey spent $40 million to give her girls a campus with computer and science labs, a library and a wellness center. None paid tuition. The students are high-achievers, often from communities where schools are struggling to overcome the legacy of apartheid.

And as the South African school year nears its end, all 72 members of the school's first graduating class have been accepted to universities in South Africa or the United States. More than a dozen have received full scholarships.

Winfrey told her students that when you teach a girl, you teach a nation.

"The first class, my class, will prove that," said Nobiva, 18, who will study visual and performing arts at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Winfrey will be at the school for graduation ceremonies in January, school officials said Wednesday as students gathered to reflect on their experiences over the last five years.

The school that has drawn sometimes harsh attention because of the celebrity who founded it, and also because of early problems.

Students have been accused of being spoiled. Allegations that a woman employed to care for the girls in their dormitory had instead abused teens were the subject of headlines around the world. The woman was acquitted last year.

Earlier this year, a newborn born to a student at the school was found dead, again drawing international attention.

"Yes, we've had bad coverage," Nobiva said. "But it has certainly made us stronger."

Winfrey, who has visited her school often, has instilled a sense of purpose. On Wednesday, Nobiva's classmates ? aspiring doctors, accountants, engineers and lawyers ? spoke of their plans to serve their communities.

"You can imagine the impact of girls with that insight going out into the universe," Nobiva said.

Australia government denies backing India, U.S. security pact (Reuters)

CANBERRA (Reuters) ? Australia denied on Friday it was pushing for a joint security pact with India and the United States, a tie-up that would likely add to China's fears that wary neighbors were trying to encircle it.

Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd was quoted in an interview with the Australian Financial Review newspaper this week as backing the idea of a trilateral security pact.

But a Rudd spokeswoman said he had been misinterpreted and had been responding to a question on the likely overturning soon of an Australian ban on uranium exports to India.

"The question that was answered was what the Indian response had been to a shift on uranium policy. It had nothing to do with anything else," she said.

Rudd was overseas and neither he not the newspaper could be reached for comment.

The idea of an Australian, Indian and U.S. security dialogue -- in part to counter China's rising naval power -- has been strongly pushed by a trio of influential think-tanks in all three countries, but has yet to be adopted by any government.

A four-way security pact proposed by the United States in 2007 which would have drawn Australia, the United States, Japan and India together disintegrated when Japan and India floated concerns that it would look like an attempt to encircle China.

India's foreign ministry spokesman said in a statement on the ministry website that New Delhi was "not aware of any such proposal", while China's military denounced the United States and Australia for recently upgrading military ties, warning such moves could erode trust and fan Cold War-era antagonism.

China is Australia's biggest trading partner, with two-way trade in 2010 worth A$105 billion ($107 billion), up almost 24 percent on the previous year and driven by energy-hungry Chinese demand for Australian resources.

Australia, a close U.S. ally, also agreed last month to host a de facto U.S. base in the north of the country which would provide military reach into southeast Asia and the South China Sea, where China is involved in disputes with several other states over sovereignty.

Australia's ruling Labor Party is expected to vote over the to drop a longstanding ban on uranium sales to non-Nuclear Proliferation Treaty countries like India in a bid to boost exports and improve security ties with New Delhi.

U.S. official: Lockheed F-35 production should slow (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Production of Lockheed Martin Corp's (LMT.N) F-35 joint strike fighter, the costliest arms purchase in history, should be slowed because of the potential number of cracks and "hot spots" turning up in fatigue testing and analysis, the Pentagon F-35 program director said.

"The analyzed hot spots that have arisen in the last 12 months or so in the program have surprised us at the amount of change and at the cost," U.S. Navy Vice Admiral David Venlet said in an interview with Web-based publication AOL Defense.

The Pentagon program office confirmed the vice admiral's quotes on Friday.

"Most of them are little ones. But when you bundle them all up and package them, and look at where they are in the airplane and how hard they are to get at after you buy the jet, the cost burden of that is what sucks the wind out of your lungs," Venlet added.

"I believe it's wise to sort of temper production for a while here, until we get some of these heavy years of learning under our belt and get that managed right," he said.

Lockheed did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Pentagon currently plans to buy more than 2,400 F-35 aircraft in three models, at a cost of more than $382 billion.

Lockheed, the Pentagon's No. 1 contractor by sales, has projected the F-35 would account for just over 20 percent of its revenue when it hits full production.

The plane is currently in early production.

(This story corrects the name spelling to Venlet throughout. Also corrects the last paragraph to make the word "revenue," not "profit.)
