When Cho was a little girl, her father was deported to Korea, an event that made her family very protective of their American identity and status.
"I'm the only member of my family to have been born in America, so my mother would always push me forward and say She's white," she says.
Later her father was able to return to the U.S., but him leaving made her see that they are outsiders in this country and gave her a different point of view in starting the work she does. Cho wanted to maker sure that:
"We had a voice that was being heard and that our voice had a lot of humor to it, because within humor, there is a lot of strength," she explains.
Knowing she never wanted to be anything else but a comedian, Cho started her career at as a teenager and became financially independent at age 16.
She went on to work with acclaimed comedians, such as Jerry Seinfeld and Bob Hope. In 1994, Cho won the American Comedy Award for Best Female Comedian.
That same year, based on her stand-up routine, ABC developed and aired a sitcom, starring Cho, called All American Girl. Although short lived, it was one of the first shows to prominently feature an Asian-American woman. Yet, it also became a challenge for Cho's physical appearance.
"I was really considered such an outlaw for being an Asian-American that every other aspect of myself had to be controlled and weight was a big part of it," says she.
But the rejection only propelled her to do better and take on different projects. Since then, her TV career has included, The Cho Show, 30 Rock and Dancing with the Stars.
Today, Cho is shooting the third season of the Lifetime TV series, Drop Dead Diva, and producing Yellow, an album about rage, age and ethnicity.

He was flanked by conservative and Tea Party activists. They worked hard during last year's elections and are working hard now for a law that some say would have been almost unthinkable before Republicans' big 2010 election gains. The GOP went from the minority to holding a 3-to-1 legislative edge. But even with that margin, right-to-work backers admit the override is still touch and go.
"We've been calling our legislators nonstop, letting them know that this is why the voters put them in their position last November," says Kevin Smith, who leads the conservative group Cornerstone Action.

Right-to-work's fate here very likely rests with the 400-member New Hampshire House, where unlike the state Senate, the earlier votes on the bill weren't vetoproof. House Speaker William O'Brien says he's convinced the needed two-thirds vote will happen.
"Right-to-work is what the people in New Hampshire want," he says. "Members of the caucus are listening to that, and even those who have some concerns about the legislation are going to be stepping forward and saying yes."
Or saying nothing at all: O'Brien's leadership team has also asked Republicans who oppose right-to-work to leave the hall during the override vote ? a move that's counter to the spirit of a rule requiring lawmakers to vote if present.
But regardless of the final tally, Lee Quandt says the real vote on the issue won't be taken at the statehouse. He's a Republican who was removed from the House's Budget Committee for opposing a separate effort to limit collective bargaining rights. Quandt says he has repeatedly warned fellow Republicans they are playing with electoral fire, but he says they aren't listening.
"So let them go; we are just going to duke it out," he says. "This is not going to be the last vote on this issue. The last vote's gonna be in November of 2012. That's the last vote."
If the override succeeds, New Hampshire would be the first state in a decade to enact right-to-work, and the only state in the Northeast.

Authorities said at least 89 people have died in the southwest Missouri city of Joplin after a massive tornado blasted through with cataclysmic force, ripping into a hospital, upending cars and leaving only a forest of splintered tree trunks behind where entire neighborhoods once stood.

The toll had stood at 24 as officials struggled to communicate without power and cellphone service, but they said they feared the number would rise after daybreak. The Missouri National Guard planned to search for the injured throughout the night.
"You see pictures of World War II, the devastation and all that with the bombing. That's really what it looked like," said Kerry Sachetta, the principal of a flattened Joplin High School. "I couldn't even make out the side of the building. It was total devastation in my view. I just couldn't believe what I saw."

The same storm system that produced the Joplin tornado spawned twisters along a broad swath of the Midwest, from Oklahoma to Wisconsin. At least one person was killed in Minneapolis. But the devastation in Missouri appeared to be the worst of the day, eerily reminiscent of the tornadoes that killed more than 300 people across the South last month.
City spokeswoman Lynn Onstot said the twister ? believed to be between one-half to three-quarters of a mile wide ? was on the ground for nearly four miles. It hit a hospital packed with patients and a commercial area including a Home Depot construction store, numerous smaller businesses and restaurants and a grocery store.
Jasper County emergency management director Keith Stammer said an estimated 2,000 buildings were damaged in this city of about 50,000 people some 160 miles south of Kansas City.
Details about fatalities and injuries were difficult to obtain even for emergency management officials, because the tornado knocked out power, landline phones and some cellphone towers, said Greg Hickman, assistant emergency management director in Newton County.
Among the worst-hit locations in Joplin was St. John's Regional Medical Center. The staff had just a few moments' notice to hustle patients into hallways before the storm struck the nine-story building, blowing out hundreds of windows and leaving the facility useless.
In the parking lot, a helicopter lay crushed on its side, its rotors torn apart and windows smashed. Nearby, a pile of cars lay crumpled into a single mass of twisted metal. Matt Sheffer dodged downed power lines, trees and closed streets to make it to his dental office across from the hospital. Rubble littered a flattened lot where a pharmacy, gas station and some doctor's offices once stood.
"My office is totally gone. Probably for two to three blocks, it's just leveled," he said. "The building that my office was in was not flimsy. It was 30 years old and two layers of brick. It was very sturdy and well built."
St. John's patients were evacuated to other hospitals in the region, said Cora Scott, a spokeswoman for the medical center's sister hospital in Springfield.

Early Monday morning, floodlights from a temporary triage facility lit what remained of the hospital that once held as many 367 patients. Police officers could be seen combing the surrounding area for bodies.
Miranda Lewis, a spokeswoman for St. John's, was at home when the tornado sirens began going off. By early Monday, she still had no details on any deaths or injuries suffered at the hospital in the tornado strike, although she had seen the damaged building.
"It's like what you see someplace else, honestly," Lewis said. "That's a terrible way to say it, but you don't recognize what's across the street.
"I had seen it on television, but until you're standing right here and see the devastation, you can't believe it."
Michael Spencer, a national Red Cross spokesman who also assisted in the aftermath of a tornado that devastated nearby Pierce City in 2003, was also stunned.
"I've been to about 75 disasters, and I've never seen anything quite like this before," Spencer said. "You don't typically see metal structures and metal frames torn apart, and that's what you see here."
Triage centers and shelters setup around the city quickly filled to capacity. At Memorial Hall, a downtown entertainment venue, nurses and other emergency workers from across the region were treating critically injured patients.
At another makeshift unit at a Lowe's home improvement store, wooden planks served as beds. Outside, ambulances and fire trucks waited for calls. During one stretch after midnight Monday, emergency vehicles were scrambling nearly every two minutes.
Winds from the storm carried debris up to 60 miles away, with medical records, X-rays, insulation and other items falling to the ground in Greene County, said Larry Woods, assistant director of the Springfield-Greene County Office of Emergency Management.
Travel through and around Joplin was difficult, with Interstate 44 shut down and streets clogged with emergency vehicles and the wreckage of buildings.
Emergency management officials rushed heavy equipment to Joplin to help lift debris and clear the way for search and recovery operations. Gov. Jay Nixon declared a state of emergency, and President Barack Obama said the Federal Emergency Management Agency was working with state and local agencies.
Jeff Lehr, a reporter for the Joplin Globe, said he was upstairs in his home when the storm hit but was able to make his way to a basement closet.
"There was a loud huffing noise, my windows started popping. I had to get downstairs, glass was flying. I opened a closet and pulled myself into it," he told The Associated Press. "Then you could hear everything go. It tore the roof off my house, everybody's house. I came outside and there was nothing left."
An aching helplessness settled over residents, many of whom could only wander the wreckage bereft and wondering about the fate of loved ones.
Justin Gibson, 30, huddled with three relatives outside the tangled debris field of what remained of a Home Depot. He pointed to a black pickup that had been tossed into the store's ruins and said it belonged to his roommate's brother. "He was last seen here with his two little girls," ages 4 and 5, Gibson said.
"We've been trying to get ahold of him since the tornado happened," Gibson said, adding his own house had been leveled.
"It's just gone. Everything in that neighborhood is gone. The high school, the churches, the grocery store. I can't get ahold of my ex-wife to see how my kids are," he said, referring to his three children, ranging in age from 4 months to 5 years.
"I don't know the extent of this yet," Gibson said, "but I know I'll have friends and family dead."
In Minneapolis, city spokeswoman Sara Dietrich said the death was confirmed by the Hennepin County medical examiner. She had no other immediate details. Only two of the 29 people injured there were hurt critically.
Though the damage covered several blocks in Minneapolis, it appeared few houses were totally demolished. Much of the damage was to roofs, front porches that had been sheared away, or smaller items such as fences and basketball goals.
In Wisconsin, the mayor of La Crosse declared a state of emergency Sunday after a powerful storm tore roofs from homes and littered streets and lawns with downed trees and debris.
Additional storms were predicted across the southern Plains through Thursday morning.

This is WEEKEND EDITION from NPR News. I'm Liane Hansen.
This week in Washington, policymakers will still be wrestling with the domestic economy and the twin burdens of the federal deficit and debt. Many Republicans are seizing on calls from Democrats to raise the nation's debt limit. Here's House budget committee chairman Paul Ryan.
Representative PAUL RYAN (Republican, Wisconsin, Chair, Budget Committee): Like John Boehner said, for every dollar the president wants to raise the debt limit, we're saying cut at least a dollar's worth of spending because that is the necessary thing to do to stave off a debt crisis.
HANSEN: In recent decades, the national debt has risen dramatically, and the tide of red ink seems to be carrying all other policy issues with it. NPR's senior Washington editor Ron Elving is in the studio. Hi, Ron.
RON ELVING: Good to be with you, Liane.
HANSEN: So, this week there was a significant moment in the debt struggle. We hit the limit - no more borrowing allowed, right?
ELVING: In a sense, yes, at least for a period of time. What happened was that we hit the debt ceiling set by law, which was $14,294,000,000,000 dollars. We hit it right on schedule, as it were. And what didn't happen was that the market didn't crash and the Treasury said it would manage various accounts so as to keep afloat without new borrowing for a matter of about another 10 weeks.
And the idea is to give the White House and the Congress more time to negotiate a deal so that they can raise the limit again, the way they've done nearly 100 times since World War I.
HANSEN: So, they have until August. Are there negotiations going on?
ELVING: Well, there are at least two sets of negotiations going on. One is the so-called Biden group, led by the vice president, and he is meeting with Republican and Democratic leaders from Congress, from both the House and the Senate, and they're focused on the debt ceiling. And they'd like to get some kind of a deal by which the budget deficit would be reduced over the years to go by an amount that would be somewhat equivalent to the new increase in the debt ceiling. So, we're talking hundreds of billions of dollars here when they really probably need to be talking trillions of dollars.
But we may have a serious of stop-gaps where they do it in hundreds of billions and have to come back to it time and again. Now, that would keep the pressure on both sides to keep negotiating but it might not be all that reassuring to the credit markets where the U.S. has to go to borrow money.
HANSEN: And what about the other group - the senators who had a bipartisan group looking into, what, a long-term global deal on the deficit?
ELVING: Yes. And a lot of us were holding out a good deal of hope and faith in that group. But this week, the so-called gang of six - three Republicans, three Democrats in the Senate - suffered a major blow, a perhaps crippling blow. They lost one of their members, Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, who said, well, the Democrats just weren't coming across with enough cuts, particularly in the Medicare program. And this Medicare issue, of course, has been enormously difficult for both parties.
We've just seen in the last week what it did to Newt Gingrich, presidential candidate, who got boxed up in talking about whether or not the plan that the House Republicans had passed, the Paul Ryan budget plan, was too radical, did too much social engineering - to use his phrase - and we saw what that did to his candidacy. And a wide swatch of Republicans rose up to smite him for having talked like that about Paul Ryan.
So, Tom Coburn pulled out of this negotiation with the Democrats, saying the Democrats really had to own up to the difficulties with Medicare and the cost of Medicare in the long run. If he, Tom Coburn, were going to be willing to support any kind of tax increases at all - and that was the predicate of this entire gang of six - that there would be some tax increases to go with larger spending cuts.
HANSEN: We're going to talk more about Coburn's departure from the gang of six in a moment, but what is the Senate going to do with the Ryan budget, the one that the House sent over?
ELVING: It looks like they're going to have a vote on it this week, and that does not make the Republicans happy because they know they're not going to have enough votes to pass it in the Senate - too many Democrats in the Senate - and they don't really want to have to vote on that budget and vote for these big changes in Medicare, making it a voucher and private insurance system. They don't want to vote on that if it's not going to happen, and yet they pretty much have to vote for it, especially after what they saw happen to Newt Gingrich last week.
So, it's a tough position for the Republicans to be in and they would much rather have a vote on some kind of Democratic budget they could be against.
HANSEN: But what do the Republicans in the Senate want?
ELVING: They would like the Democrats to do essentially what Paul Ryan has done in the House - come forward with something tough-minded, something politically unpopular. And in the case of what Kent Conrad and the other Democrats on the Senate budget committee would likely bring forward, that would probably include some unpopular tax cuts, mostly in discretionary spending rather than in entitlement programs like Medicare. And it would also include some kinds of tax increases, whether they were on corporations or on higher-income individuals, some kind of revenue increases the Republicans would like to be able to vote against.
HANSEN: Do you see any hope on the horizon here?
ELVING: This week on Wednesday, there is a public event in town sponsored by the Peter Peterson Foundation. This is an anti-deficit outfit, private and formal group, and it is billed as the fiscal summit 2011. It will bring together the remaining gang of five from the Senate and also Paul Ryan, the man from the House and also former President Bill Clinton. Now, he was the last president to actually bring forward a budget that had a projected balance and even surplus in the future.
