(AP) ? Victoria Azarenka was back to her top-ranked self at the French Open on Wednesday.

The Australian Open champion from Belarus easily advanced to the third round at Roland Garros by beating Dinah Pfizenmaier of Germany 6-1, 6-1 on Court Philippe Chatrier.

In the first round, Azarenka struggled early before winning 12 of the final 14 games to advance. She committed 60 unforced errors in that opening match, but brought that number down to only 11 on Wednesday.

Azarenka reached the quarterfinals at Roland Garros last year, matching her best performance at the clay-court Grand Slam.

U.S. Open champion Sam Stosur also advanced, beating Irina Falconi of the United States 6-1, 6-4.

Later Wednesday, top-ranked Novak Djokovic was playing Blaz Kavcic of Slovenia, and 2009 champion Roger Federer was scheduled to face Adrian Ungur of Romania. In the women's tournament, No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland was to play Venus Williams in the last match on Chatrier.

On Tuesday, Serena Williams showed that, even after 13 Grand Slam championships and dozens of other titles, she is capable of throwing away a big lead.

Williams led 5-1 in the second-set tiebreaker and was two points from victory nine times but still lost to Virginie Razzano of France 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 ? the first time she has ever lost in the first round of a Grand Slam tournament.

"I definitely was nervous. I'm always a little nervous in every match I play, which I think is a little bit healthy," said the fifth-seeded Williams, who had been 46-0 in the first round of majors. "I was definitely a little nervous."

Williams entered the tournament with a 17-0 record on clay this year. And it looked like No. 18 was in the bag late in the second set.

But Razzano won six straight points to take the set and then won five straight games in the third.

"I just felt I couldn't get a ball in play," Williams said. "You know, when I did, I just felt like I was hitting late and, I mean, how can you hit late on a clay court? It was kind of odd."

Defending men's champion Rafael Nadal had no such trouble, starting his quest for a record seventh French Open title by beating Simone Bolelli of Italy 6-2, 6-2, 6-1. Maria Sharapova had an even easier time, scoring a "double bagel" in her 6-0, 6-0 win over Alexandra Cadantu of Romania.

"I feel like with every year I have improved," Sharapova said, "and I enjoy it much more."

SecureIT Plus

Did you get your security suite through a deal with your ISP? If so, you may already be using a branded version of the SecureIT Plus ($5.95/month) suite. However, ISPs don't necessarily know what's best in consumer security products. The quality of the components in SecureIT Plus varies wildly.

The basic SecureIT antivirus is quite a bit cheaper, at $1.95/month for three licenses. The Plus edition offers exactly the same antivirus, the same firewall, and the same phishing protection as the basic edition. SecureIT Plus adds a tuneup component and parental control.

Possibly more importantly, with the Plus edition you get 24/7 help and support. This includes a built-in chat-based help system that strongly resembles that of Password Genie ($15/year direct for five licenses, 3 stars), another product from the same parent company. With your permission, the tech support agent can remotely diagnose and fix problems.

Good Malware Protection, Poor Cleanup
Since the antivirus component is the same as that of SecureIT ($1.95/month direct for three licenses, 3 stars) I'll simply summarize here.

SecureIT's malware removal score of 3.6 points is the lowest achieved by any product tested using either my current collection of malware samples or the previous set. It left behind tons of malware traces from threats it managed to detect and even left some running. Looking specifically at rootkits it scored a dismal 3.2 points. Company representatives concurred that this product is really aimed at keeping clean systems clean, not at dealing with existing infestations. Click below for a score chart. To understand where the scores come from, please read How We Test Malware Removal.

Related Story

In my malware blocking tests, SecureIT soared. With 9.7 of 10 possible points, it has the best score of any product tested using the current set of samples. It detected all the rootkit samples and scored 9.8 points. ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus + Firewall (free, 3.5 stars) earned 10 points against those same rootkits, but 9.8 is darn good. SecureIT also did a good job at blocking malware downloads. The article ?How We Test Malware Blocking explains how I test products and come up with these scores.

Related Story

Firewall and Phishing Protection
I made sure that SecureIT's antiphishing component was turned on for testing, but it didn't detect a single fraudulent site, not even when I dug up some week-old examples. Consistent antiphishing champion Norton blocked 94 percent. Internet Explorer alone managed to block 45 percent. Don't rely on SecureIT for phishing protection. The chart below details the sad news, and the article How We Test Antiphishing explains exactly how I derive these scores.

Related Story

The firewall component, shared by SecureIT and SecureIT Plus, has its own set of problems. It failed a couple Web-based attack tests, to start with. It nominally controls which programs can access the network, but the only ones I ever observed it blocking were essential Windows processes. A cyber crook could easily write code to disable this product's protection.

The one bright spot in my firewall testing involved exploits. When I attacked the test system using the Core Impact penetration tool, SecureIT blocked 60 percent of the exploits and identified them by name. No exploit managed to break through security. For a more detailed view of the firewall please see my review of the basic, non-Plus SecureIT edition.

CultureLab's 2012 guide to summer festivals

Kat Austen, CultureLab editor

rexfeatures_1342342d.jpg

(Image: David McHugh/Rex Features)

IT IS that time of year again, when people in the northern hemisphere dig out their tents and take to the festival fields. As usual the music line-ups look amazing, but what about the science?

Things kick off in the UK with the Isle of Wight Festival (21-24 June), where the times between sets, including one from headliners Pearl Jam, will be a hive of activity promoting all things apian, thanks to the return of the Let it Bee campaign, launched with help from former Beatle Paul McCartney.

To keep visitors laughing at Latitude (12-15 July) in Southwold, Suffolk, the public face of particle physics Brian Cox will be on stage at the Comedy Arena.

If you fancy something more confrontational, comedian and physicist Steve Mould and chemist Andrea Sella will be at the Secret Garden Party (19-22 July) in Cambridgeshire, playing on old rivalries in a science showdown. Then, to unwind after all the excitement, you can plan a stellar holiday at the Intergalactic Travel Bureau.

After an impressive launch in 2011, Wilderness (10-12 August) returns to Oxfordshire with talks by public astronomer for the Royal Observatory, Marek Kukula, and polar explorer Ann Daniels, as well as ecological stand-up from hedgehog aficionado Hugh Warwick. The inimitable Guerilla Science will be on hand, too, to turn your clothes into musical instruments, while at the Shambala Festival (23-27 August) in Northamptonshire, the group's anatomical artists will acquaint people with their innards by painting them on exposed skin.

If you're at Green Man (17-19 August) in Glanusk Park, Powys, go to Einstein's Garden to explore the world of energy. And as a bonus, the Unlimited Space Agency is running astronaut training sessions in collaboration with former European Space Agency instructor Gail Iles and NASA consultant Alex Salam.

Elsewhere in Europe, in addition to its usual environmental activities, the ?ya Festival (7-11 August) in Oslo, Norway, features Bj?rk, who will treat festivalgoers to her spectacular science-themed show Biophilia.

Meanwhile, across the pond, the NXNE (11-17 June) in Toronto, Canada, tops a packed schedule of digital workshops with a performance by sci-fi songsters The Flaming Lips. Due south, on the Hudson river in New York, the Clearwater Festival (16-17 June) will host a Green Living Expo, while Ani Di Franco serenades revellers.

And if your appetite is still not satisfied by the end of the season, head to Bumbershoot (1-3 September) in Seattle, where you can tantalise your tastebuds with science-inspired cuisine from The Cooking Lab.

Sporting snaps winless streak

Associated Press Sports

updated 6:12 p.m. ET May 27, 2012

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) - C.J. Sapong broke a seven-match goal drought, and Kei Kamara scored his team-leading fifth goal and added an assist to help Sporting Kansas City beat the San Jose Earthquakes 2-1 on Sunday.

Sporting (8-3-1) broke a four-match winless streak.

Simon Dawkins scored in the 72nd minute for San Jose (8-3-3), cutting it to 2-1.

Kamara set up Sapong's fifth-minute goal with a long cross from the right flank, with Sapong finishing with his left foot from 7 yards for his fourth goal of the season.

In the 39th, left back Michael Harrington took a cross-field pass from right back Chance Myers, then fed the ball in to Kamara for a bouncing header past goalkeeper Jon Busch.

Harrington was a 23rd-minute substitute for Seth Sinovic, who fell over the end boards and sustained a cut on his left hand that required 20 stitches. Sinovic was already playing with his broken right hand in a cast.

San Jose was without its two leading scorers, with Chris Wondolowski (11) goals) on international duty and Steven Lenhart (five goals) suspended for yellow-card accumulation, but still made the game close.

Crystals found in magma chambers may help scientists predict volcanic eruptions

To learn more about volcanic activity in an effort to help predict it, researchers investigated the magma from within volcanoes. Crystals often grow within magma chambers, large crevices of searing hot fluid rock beneath volcanoes.

More than 500 million people live close to volcanoes that could erupt with little or no clear warning, causing widespread devastation and even global effects on climate, as in the case of the?1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo. Although scientists keep an eye on many of the world's volcanoes for ground movements, gas emissions and other signs of unrest, volcanologists still face challenges directly linking surface activity with volcanic plumbing changes deep underground.

To learn more about volcanic activity in an effort to help predict it, researchers investigated the magma from within volcanoes. Crystals often grow within magma chambers, large crevices of searing hot fluid rock beneath volcanoes.

"Crystals can be thought of like a book," said researcher Kate Saunders, a volcanologist at the University of Bristol in England. "If we understand how to read them, they contain vital information on formation of the magma." Changes in magma behavior recorded in crystals might in turn shed light on volcanic activity. [World's 5 Most Active Volcanoes]

Crystal growth

Crystals within magma often grow in concentric zones. This makes them like tree rings ? thin ones reflect times of little growth, while thick ones represent much growth. Each zone also has a subtly distinct chemical makeup that mirrors changes in physical conditions within magma chambers, thus giving clues on internal volcanic activity.

Saunders and her colleagues analyzed orthopyroxene crystals within volcanic rocks taken from nine different eruptions at Mount St. Helens in Washington state, from 1980 to 1986. The volcano is best known for its?spectacular eruption in 1980.

The researchers discovered the rims of the crystals typically grew within 12 months of each eruption. Peaks in crystal growth were linked with?increased earthquake activity?and flow of sulfur dioxide gas at the volcano.

"Such a correlation between crystal growth and volcanic seismicity has been long anticipated, but to see such clear evidence of this relationship is remarkable," Saunders told OurAmazingPlanet.

Volcano vital signs

Although this work cannot lead scientists to predict the time and day of an eruption, "the more we understand the internal workings of a volcano, the better idea we have," Saunders said. "You wouldn't ask a doctor to predict the exact time of someone's death. However, by monitoring a patient's vital signs, they are able to provide a much more thorough diagnosis.

"The same is also true with volcanoes. The more we know about the processes that occur beneath them and the time scales over which these occur, the better we can anticipate their behavior and?timing of future eruptions."

The researchers hope to examine other volcanoes and compare their results with other volcano-monitoring techniques.

The best plan, Saunders said, may be to collect rocks from eruptions "50 years, 100 years, 1 million years ago and interrogate these samples to investigate whether the volcano is behaving in a similar predicable manner and whether we can use this knowledge to help us to watch for similar signs in the monitoring record."

Saunders and her colleagues detailed their findings in the May 25 issue of the journal Science.

Dining with Jack, Union Jack

I'm working on another post right now that I really think you're gonna love seeing, but it inspired me heavily to browse for things that are ordinary, but extraordinary in their interpretation. For example:

Interior Design by:?Broosk Saib

I love these tufted dining room chairs upholstered in vintage union jack flag fabric. Not only do they look extremely comfortable, they also provide a pop of color with an instant and easily recognizable modern and trendy pattern that just about everyone is using now-a-days.

Apple Changes Name of ?iPad WiFi + 4G? to ?iPad WiFi + Cellular across many of its Stores

You remember Apple?s new iPad with Wi-Fi + 4G right ? There have been some complaints across the globe (notably in Australia and the United Kingdom) regarding Apple?s branding of the 4G-LTE compatible iPads. So taking into?consideration of the complaints, Apple has renamed iPad WiFi + 4G? to ?iPad WiFi + Cellular. So what happens to older iPads ?

All the first-generation iPad and iPad 2 models with 3G-data connections were referred to as ?iPad WiFi + 3G,? and the 3G model of the 16GB iPad 2 that Apple still sells is still called ?iPad 2 WiFi + 3G.?

cellular

9to5Mac noticed it and according to them, the change occurred within the last ?24-48 hours? across many of Apple?s region-specific webstores as well as the retail locations. The source of this criticism of the 4G third-generation iPad models is the fact that the 4G LTE only functions in the U.S. and Canada, on a total of five carriers.

The third-generation iPad can still connect to any 3G bands worldwide below the LTE level, but Apple still formerly advertised 4G capabilities in non-iPad-4G LTE- supported regions.

Apple stopped that marketing weeks ago, but this new iPad name change marks Apple?s full point of not trying to fool customers. Apple did not simply make this iPad name change in the affected Australia and UK regions, but they changed also in the U.S., Canada, UAE, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, New Zealand, Malaysia, Ireland, and Hong Kong.

In Australian continent of the Apple store, where Apple has taken the most heat regarding the former 4G iPad branding. Here is what Apple had to say

This product supports very fast cellular networks. It is not compatible with current Australian 4G LTE networks and WiMAX networks

If you see acroos the different Apple Stores you can see the new iPad name of ?iPad WiFi + Cellular? and the changes were made withing the last 24-48 hours with first on May 9th.

Apple retail stores have already begun changing out their signage to new ?WiFi + Cellular? marketing.

Live, work and do business!: NETWORKING SUPER POWERS FOR ...

You may be surprised to know that I am shy. People usually are. They see me speaking at a luncheon or Chamber function. It's much easier to speak to a room of people who are interested? in what I have to say (at lease I think they are) than it is at a cocktail reception or business after hours where I have to make small talk. If I had to network that way for my own small business, I would be terrible.

Yet, networking is vital for your business. And there is tremendous value in this collaboration for our local tourism industry. Our rural community is increasingly seen as a place for entertainment, leisure activities, and an alternative to a busy urban area. Visitor requests for information are more than three times what it was at this time last year. We can thank the beautiful cultural heritage of the Palouse region for this increased interest and can use this identity marker as a means to promote our farm products, cottage industries and other local producers through rural tourism.

Using our heritage for promotion is not only a fashionable trend right now, but also shows a community's social, economic and political determination. We are discovering a new-found interest for our own rural identity, and as tourists come into the area, they buy local products, eat in local restaurants and represent a sizeable source of income.

Visitors are intrigued when a restaurant features locally grown products or a boutique hotel has locally made lotions and soaps in each room. Let's work on promoting the region as a whole! This requires building these business relationships between grower/manufacturer and retail. The Pullman Chamber offers many networking options each month to get out and hobnob with other business owners - meetings, luncheons, and after-hours. What a great way to find that new product for your business, or a new way to incorporate the Palouse into your business identity.

And if your shy? Do what I do and check out the daily posts on the Chamber's facebook page and be armed with a current topic to talk about!

Two jailed over NZ ship disaster

Two officers of the container ship that ran aground off New Zealand, causing its worst maritime spill, have been jailed for seven months each.

Captain Mauro Balomaga and navigation officer Leonil Relon, both from the Philippines, had previously pleaded guilty to mishandling the vessel and altering ship documents.

The Liberian-flagged MV Rena hit a reef off the North Island on 5 October 2011.

Hundreds of tonnes of fuel oil leaked out, causing widespread pollution.

The oil polluted beaches and killed wildlife including thousands of sea birds as it leaked from the ship aground on the Astrolabe Reef.

'Milestone'

New Zealand officials hailed the decision, saying the ship's officers had to be held accountable for their actions.

"This grounding has had significant consequences for the Bay of Plenty community and the country as a whole," said Maritime New Zealand director Keith Manch.

"Today marks a milestone in the response, which is still under way."

An interim report by the New Zealand Transport Accident Investigation Commission stated that the accident occurred as the crew took shortcuts to meet a deadline to reach port.

Prosecutors said the crew had ignored basic navigation practices and deviated substantially from the approved course as they hurried to get to Tauranga port.

In January the grounded ship broke in two, spilling some 300 containers and debris into the water.

The ship's owner Daina Shipping, a subsidiary of Greek shipping giant Costamare, has also been charged over the discharge of harmful substances.

New Zealand's government has estimated the cost of the clean-up at NZ$130m ($108m, ?68m).

Best Things To Do In Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik, is truly the "Pearl of the Adriatic" and is one of the more remarkable places to visit. There's plenty to do in Dubrovnik, whether it's soaking up the sun, visiting places of history or having fun in the sea.

Here are their top things to do in this jewel of the Adriatic.

Scale the Town Walls: No visit to Dubrovnik would be complete without a leisurely walk around the city walls. Built between the 13th and 16th centuries and still intact today, these powerful walls are the finest in the world and Dubrovnik's main claim to fame.

Visit St John Fort, the Maritime Museum and Aquarium: Combine your trip to the Walls of Dubrovnik with a visit to the St John Fort. It contains Dubrovnik?s Maritime Museum and the Dubrovnik Aquarium. St John's Fort dates back to the 13th Century and has grown extensively over the centuries. It traditionally formed part of the seaward defence of the city of Dubrovnik, a bulwark against pirates and invaders.

Visit Dubrovnik Cathedral: Dubrovnik Cathedral, or the Church of the Assumption, is actually the third church built on the site. The first, a Byzantine-style building, was constructed in the 6th and 7th centuries, before a Romanesque church replaced it in the 12th century. Then, the 1667 earthquake wrecked the structure. The final incarnation assumed the Baroque fashion soon after. Aside from the architecture, the artwork is of particular note, which includes Titian's The Assumption at the main altar. For about 10 HRK (or about $2 USD), you can explore the treasury that has amassed a large collection of previous reliquaries and several body parts of St. Blaise.

Rector's Palace: The Gothic-Renaissance Rector's Palace was built in the late 15th century and is adorned with outstanding sculptural ornamentation. It retains a striking compositional unity despite being rebuilt many times. Notice the finely carved capitals and the ornate staircase in the atrium, which is often used for concerts during the Summer Festival. Today the palace has been turned into a museum with artfully restored rooms, portraits, coats-of-arms and coins, evoking the glorious history of Dubrovnik.

Seaside Drinks at Buza: To get there, follow the signs that say cold drinks- they will lead you to a hole in the fortress wall. The Cafe hugs the rocks and fortress walls which translates into a great view of the sea and passing ships. It also means drinking and cliff jumping. If you have a few hours to burn do yourself a favour and pencil this into your plans.

Enjoy the Dubrovnik Summer festival: The Dubrovnik Summer Festival is a music and drama event held from July to August each year. The festival takes place on more than 30 open air stages in palaces, churches, monasteries and forts around the city.

Explore Adriatic: Day trips to Mostar and Montenegro are very popular. Excursions to Mljet, Korula and the Elafiti Islands and Cavtat are also very famous. Cavtat is Dubrovnik's quite neighbor to the South. If you are looking for a quiet day trip that will provide private swimming opportunities and more authentic Croatian shopping, Cavtat is for you.

Visit Lokrum: A small, lush, uninhabited yet beautiful island which lies about 700m off Dubrovnik's spectacular coastline. With just a short 10 minute ferry ride from the port of Old town to Lokrum, this island can provide a few hours of fun in the sun and some nice hikes along Lokrum's many cliffs.

Obama strikes at Romney in Iowa, seeks 2008 energy

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? President Barack Obama delivered his harshest rebuttal yet to rival Mitt Romney on Thursday, dismissing his challenger's claims as "a cowpie of distortions" while seeking to rekindle the all-but-faded Iowa magic that launched him in 2008. Escalating his criticism of Romney's background as a venture capitalist, Obama said it wasn't adequate preparation for the presidency.

"There may be value for that kind of experience, but it's not in the White House," Obama said.

The speech, to a cheering Iowa crowd of about 2,500 at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, represented a new intensity for Obama's campaign as Romney begins to hit his stride carrying the Republican standard. It came as Iowa, soured by the direction of the nation and its economy, has drifted away from Obama since his 2008 caucus victory over Hillary Rodham Clinton made him the Democratic front-runner.

While Obama carried the state in the general election by a comfortable margin that year, polls this year have shown voters narrowly preferring Romney, who plans to wage his own major effort in Iowa.

Trying to cast Romney as out of touch with working-class voters, Obama declared that hard work hasn't led to higher incomes. "Higher profits haven't led to better jobs," he said. "And you can't solve that problem if you can't even see that it's a problem."

Obama pointedly chose the same turf where Romney, the presumptive Republican nominee, once declared that corporations are people. Obama said Romney would roll back regulations and return to policies that he said helped create the recession and would increase government deficits.

Reacting to Romney's charge last week that Obama had created "a prairie fire of debt," the president countered that Romney's tax plan is "like trying to put out a prairie fire with some gasoline."

In a statement issued after the speech, Romney spokesman Ryan Williams said: "A president who broke his promise to cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term has no standing when it comes to fiscal responsibility."

Earlier, in blue-collar Newton, Iowa, once the prosperous headquarters of Maytag appliances, Obama visited a wind-turbine plant to push his alternative energy agenda and delivered a message that could as well have applied to all of Iowa. "Yeah, we're facing tough times, but we're getting through them, we're getting though them together," he said.

While offering only six of the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency, how Iowa voters ultimately judge Obama is expected to be an important factor in the race.

"Last time it was a lot more exciting. It was a new thing," said Nancy Bobo, a Des Moines Obama volunteer and one of his earliest Iowa backers in 2008. "Today, we're all just very serious."

Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, has made the struggling economy the centerpiece of his campaign. But Obama can point to comparatively low 5.1 percent unemployment in Iowa, where stable financial services and strong agriculture sectors buoyed the economy while manufacturing has struggled to rebound.

Romney had made the comment about corporations as he argued against raising taxes as a way of shoring up Social Security and Medicare. Members of the audience interrupted, calling for increased taxes on corporations, and Romney responded: "Corporations are people, my friend. ... Everything corporations earn ultimately goes to people."

The comment has been used by opponents to characterize Romney, a former private equity firm executive, as more comfortable in the boardroom than the shop floor.

Obama's campaign has emphasized episodes in which Romney's former firm closed plants and laid off workers, and has aired a stinging TV ad on the subject in Iowa, Colorado, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

In his fairgrounds' speech Thursday, Obama said private-equity firms can sometimes create jobs. "But when maximizing short-term gains for your investors rather than building companies that last is your goal," he added, "then sometimes it goes the other way. Workers get laid off. Benefits disappear. Pensions are cut. Factories go dark."

Obama himself has struggled to attract blue-collar voters, keys to winning struggling swing working-class regions such as southeast Ohio, western Pennsylvania and rural Iowa. Newton is the seat of Jasper County, Iowa, where unemployment was 7.1 percent in April, higher than Iowa's average but down sharply from last winter.

While Iowa is known for its first-in-the-nation caucuses, it also is a coveted general election state, despite its small electoral total. Democrat Al Gore carried the state by less than a percentage point in 2000, followed by Republican George W. Bush's 2-point victory in 2004.

Obama has already spent more than $2.6 million on advertising, a pace as aggressive as in any other battleground state. He's been a regular visitor, and was making his second trip in a month.

Yet the president's approval rating here has been stuck below 50 percent for over two years, softened in part by criticism from Republicans campaigning for Iowa's leadoff caucuses.

Polls show Iowans also have become increasingly bothered by federal spending, an issue Romney stoked in Des Moines last week in a visit where he promised to shrink the deficit.

Iowans, many of whom met Obama in the 2008 campaign, also are disappointed by what they hoped would be a transcendent presidency, said J. Ann Selzer, the longtime director of The Des Moines Register's Iowa Poll.

"You hear disaffection. You hear them say, 'This isn't what I paid for,'" Selzer said. "The guy they sent there to recast things wasn't able to do it."

Privately updating Senate Democrats on Thursday, Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said the president has several possible paths to collecting the 270 electoral votes he needs for victory in November. But he noted that Romney, the Republican Party and allied super PACs are likely to have a great deal of money to spend. Obama vastly outspent Republican John McCain in winning the White House four years ago, an advantage that Democrats appear unlikely to command in 2012.

Romney senses the opening. He too has cultivated an Iowa network. Indeed, he campaigned aggressively for the 2008 caucuses during his narrowly losing bid for the state's delegates. Romney and the Republican National Committee have hired state directors and are hiring staff to run a dozen or more offices planned for Iowa.

And his campaign has begun running television ads in Iowa.

Right at 'Home': Phillips is new 'Idol'

By Craig Berman, TODAY.com contributor

Mario Anzuoni / Reuters

Finalists Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez on the season finale.

?American Idol? voters sure love guys with guitars.?Phillip Phillips continued the dominance of the guys on the show, winning the season 11 title and the million-dollar recording contract that goes with it. The normally laid-back singer was overwhelmed when host Ryan Seacrest announced the results, breaking down midway through his performance of ?Home? and leaving the stage to hug his parents.

It was a rare misstep for the former pawn shop worker from Georgia, who was never announced as one of the lowest vote-getters at any point. Though his voice lacked the power and range of some of the other finalists and he battled health problems throughout the season, he was the most contemporary of the contenders and should have a big seller with that first single.

Jessica Sanchez finished second, continuing an ?Idol? trend. No woman has won the show since Jordin Sparks in season six, and if the folks behind the show want to change that next year, they should probably avoid selecting the same types of singers to compete each season.

The two-hour, seven-minute finale took its time getting to that final envelope, with the decision made by a record 132 million votes. The show used some of those 127 minutes to make fun of the judges (though it largely spared the contestants, except for one early audition montage), and there were the usual live performances featuring selected contestants sharing the stage with music legends.

Mark Davis / Getty Images

Phillip sang with John Fogerty, breaking out the Creedence Clearwater Revival hits ?Have You Ever Seen the Rain?? and ?Bad Moon Rising.? If the post-"Idol" career doesn?t go as expected for the new champ, he?s got a future in a CCR or Dave Matthews cover band for sure.

Jessica, meanwhile, got original "Dreamgirl" Jennifer Holliday for ?I Am Telling You I?m Not Going.? It was one of the best performances of the season, though sadly for Jessica it came after the votes were already counted.

In addition, Joshua Ledet sang with ?the biggest inspiration of my life,? season three champion Fantasia Barrino, a duet that likely shattered glass throughout the greater Los Angeles area. Skylar Laine got Reba McEntire as her partner, and Hollie Cavanagh sang with Jordin Sparks. ?

For the group numbers, Chaka Khan came onstage with the women, while the legendary Neil Diamond joined the men and thrilled Red Sox fans everywhere by performing ?Sweet Caroline.?

And that?s not all! Viewers saw the first ?Idol? proposal in history, as Diana DeGarmo (season three finalist) said yes to Ace Young (season five seventh-place finisher). There was also a Bee Gees tribute from the ?Idol? guys, and Rihanna performed without a wardrobe malfunction or lyrics that caused the Fox censors to faint with worry. Jane Lynch was also spotted rocking out in the stands to the Chaka Khan set. Maybe there?s a ?Glee? guest appearance in her future.

Other notable moments in the finale:

  • Ford did wind up giving Phillip a car despite his bailing on most of the promotional videos. Also getting new wheels were Jessica, Phillip?s brother-in-law and Jessica?s family friend/music mentor. However, Ford did not pull an Oprah and give everyone in the audience a car.
  • The ?Idol? finalists showed that you can sing the phone book, as Randy Jackson always says, but it?s not exactly something that cries out for an iTunes download.
  • ?Idol? showed that it can indeed survive without J.Lo as a judge, as she was absent for a good portion of the broadcast to get ready for her two-song set.
  • Steven Tyler also took the stage along with Aerosmith for two tunes. Apparently, Randy, who was the only judge not to perform, doesn't have much pull with his former bandmates. Those Journey days must seem like they happened a very long time ago. Oh, wait. They did.

VIENNA (AP) ? The U.N. atomic agency has found evidence at an underground bunker in Iran that could mean the country has moved closer to producing the uranium threshold needed to arm nuclear missiles, diplomats said Friday.

The news comes a day after Iran and six world powers found they were still far apart over how to oversee Tehran's atomic program but wanted talks to continue to avoid possible military action.

Iran is under several rounds of U.N. sanctions for its failure to disclose information on its controversial nuclear program. Tehran says it is enriching uranium to provide more nuclear energy for its growing population, while the U.S. and other nations fear that Iran doing that so it can later make nuclear weapons.

The International Atomic Energy Agency has found traces of uranium enriched up to 27 percent at the Fordo enrichment plant in central Iran, several diplomats told The Associated Press.

That is still substantially below the 90-percent level needed to make the fissile core of nuclear arms. But it is above Iran's highest-known enrichment grade, which is close to 20 percent and can be turned into weapons-grade material much more quickly than the Islamic Republic's main stockpile, which can only be used for fuel at around 3.5 percent enrichment.

Calls to Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Iran's chief delegate to the IAEA, were rejected and the switchboard at the Iranian mission said he was not available. IAEA media officials said the agency had no comment on the latest report.

The diplomats ? who demanded anonymity because their information is privileged ? said the find did not necessarily mean that Iran was covertly raising its enrichment threshold toward weapons-grade level. They said the centrifuges that produce enriched uranium could have over-enriched at the start as technicians adjusted their output ? an assessment shared by nonproliferation expert David Albright.

Albright, whose Washington-based Institute for Science and International Security looks for signs of proliferation, said a new configuration at Fordo means its tends to "overshoot 20 percent" at the start.

"Nonetheless, embarrassing for Iran," he wrote in an email to the AP.

The latest attempt to persuade Iran to compromise and let U.N. experts view its nuclear program ended inconclusively Thursday at a meeting in Baghdad. At the talks, six nations ? the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany ? failed to persuade Tehran to freeze its 20 percent enrichment. Envoys said the group will meet again next month in Moscow.

Iran went into the Baghdad talks urging the West to scale back on recently toughened sanctions, which have targeted Iran's critical oil exports and have effectively blackballed the country from international banking networks. The 27-nation European Union is set to ban all Iranian fuel imports on July 1, shutting the door on about 18 percent of Iran's market.

Iran started enriching uranium to 20 percent last year, mostly at Fordo, saying it needed the material to fuel a research reactor and for medical purposes. Still, its long-standing refusal to stop enrichment and accept reactor fuel from abroad has sparked fears it wants to expand its domestic program to be able to turn it toward making weapons.

Those concerns have increased since it started higher enrichment at Fordo, which is carved into a mountain to make it impervious to attack from Israel or the United States. Those two nations have not ruled out using force as a last option if diplomacy fails to curb the Islamic Republic's nuclear program.

Saeed Jalili, Iran's top nuclear negotiator, offered a lukewarm assessment of the latest negotiations, in light of European and American refusal to lift tough sanctions against Iran as Tehran had hoped.

"The result of the talks was that we were able to get more familiar with the views of each other," Jalili told reporters.

European diplomats focused on the positives.

"It is clear that we both want to make progress and that there is some common ground," European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who led the Baghdad talks, told reporters. "However, significant differences remain. Nonetheless, we do agree on the need for further discussion to expand that common ground."

But in Washington, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said significant differences remain between the two sides and that it's now up to Iran "to close the gaps."

"Iran now has the choice to make: Will it meet its international obligations and give the world confidence about its intentions or not?" Clinton said.

The diplomats who spoke to the AP said a confidential IAEA report on Iran's nuclear program to be released later Friday to the agency's 35-nation board will mention of the traces of 27-percent enrichment found at Fordo.

Iran already has around 700 centrifuges churning out 20-percent enriched uranium at Fordo. The diplomats said the report will also note that ? while Iran has set up around 350 more centrifuges since late last year at the site ? these machines are not enriching.

While the reason for that could be purely technical, it could also be a signal from Tehran that it is waiting for progress in the negotiations.

The report is also expected to detail the state of talks between the U.N. nuclear agency and Iran that the agency hopes will re-launch a long-stalled probe into suspicions that Tehran has worked on nuclear-weapons related experiments ? charges that Tehran denies.
