Verizon HTC Droid DNA name crops up again

Android Central

The story of Verizon and HTC’s Droid DNA has led us from a nameless blurry-cam, through rumors of an “HTC DLX” to clear photos of the actual device and news of what appears to be the final branding. The 5-inch, 1080p smartphone, known in Japan as the HTC J Butterfly, looks set to become a major launch for Big Red later in the year.

Today brings further confirmation of the Droid DNA moniker, as the “HTC Droid DNA” name has appeared on a Verizon support page listing devices with non-removable batteries. Alongside the name is the ADR6435 name previously associated with the “DLX” codename. If you've been following this device, you'll remember we first broke news of the Droid DNA name a few weeks back, when we spotted it on a leaked Verizon MAP document.

So barring some last-minute change, it’s probably a safe bet at this point that the DLX will come to market as the Droid DNA. Verizon folks -- anyone thinking of skipping the current crop of phones in favor of a shiny new DNA? Let us know in the comments.

CNBC: Softbank to buy majority stake in Sprint

By David Faber, CNBC

Softbank and Sprint have reached a deal under which Softbank will pay $20 billion for a 70 percent stake in the wireless telecom operator, according to people close to the situation.

The deal is expected to be announced tomorrow morning. While certain details are still being worked out, the boards of both companies have agreed in principle to the deal and are expected to officially ratify it this evening.

The transaction calls for Softbank to buy $8 billion worth of shares directly from Sprint at a price of $5.25 each and tender for another $12 billion worth of the shares from existing holders at a price of $7.30 a share, a large premium to Sprint's current price. Given the deal's structure, it will not require a shareholder vote.

The equity being purchased directly by Softbank includes a $3 billion convertible bond purchase that is exercisable at $5.25 and will be sold well before the deal closes, in order to provide funds for Sprint as it moves to deal with certain debt maturities at the parent and at the 48 percent owned Clearwire.

While a Sprint purchase of Clearwire will not be announced tomorrow, sources familiar with the situation tell me Sprint is working on that deal and needs to insure the governance for Clearwire is in its control prior to closing the Softbank transaction.

The remaining $5 billion in primary equity being purchased by Softbank will also be bought at $5.25 a share, said people familiar with the talks.

The purchase is a huge one for Softbank, which is essentially making a $20 billion gamble that it success in developing LTE wireless services in its home market of Japan can be translated to the U.S. Sprint, while the third largest wireless provider in the U.S., significantly trails the two market leaders, Verizon.

Softbank's hope, say people familiar with its strategy, is to build on Sprint's spectrum position, while hoping the company can further consolidate the wireless industry through acquisitions of more spectrum and other operators. The parties hope to close the deal within six months.

Second Bookshelf on the Right: Review: The You Know Who Girls ...

SUMMARY FROM NETGALLEY.COM:
Abbey Brooks, Gila High freshman-to-be, never thought a hellish day of shopping at the mall with her best friend, Kate, could change her life. But when she orders French fries from the flirtatious Hot Dog on a Stick Chick, she gets more than deep-fried potatoes. Abbey tries to ignore the weird, happy feeling in her gut, but that proves to be as impossible as avoiding the very insistent (and?rumor has it?very lesbian) players on Gila High?s girls? basketball team. They want freakishly long-legged Abbey to try out, and Abbey doesn?t hate the idea. But Kate made Abbey pinky swear to avoid basketball and to keep away from the you-know-who girls on the team.

Sometimes promises can?t be kept. And sometimes girls in uniform are impossible to resist.

MY TAKE:

I don't usually read gay/lesbian YA fiction, but the book's blurb sounded really interesting so I gave it a go.

The You Know Who Girls: Freshman Year focuses on Abbey Brooks and her first year of high school. Over the course of the year, she finds herself attracted to girls and finds that she's actually pretty good at basketball, a sport she's never played before.

As a former college basketball player, I really appreciated how practices, tryouts, and the games themselves are described here. My experience was pretty much the same. As far as I know, though, none of us on our team over the years was a lesbian. There were lesbians on some of the other teams, but I liked that in this book, it was made clear that there were only a few girls on the team were actually lesbians. Basically, it's saying, straight girls can like playing basketball too.

The great thing about this book is that you don't have to be a lesbian to enjoy it. The way Abbey and her experiences are written, it could very well be a girl-boy story. It's very realistic. It doesn't paint a purely happy picture of lesbian couples, or even just couples in general, but the way their problems are written, it doesn't feel cliche at all.

There were times when I found Abbey annoying and I felt the instant attraction between her and Keeta a little bit rushed. Overall, though, the characters felt quite real and their relationships felt natural.

Thanks to NetGalley and Bold Strokes Books for the e-ARC. Publication date of The You Know Who Girls: Freshman Year is on October 16, 2012.

THE GOOD:

  1. You don't have to be gay/lesbian to enjoy this book.
  2. The relationships, for the most part, are quite realistic.
  3. The plot is well-written.

THE BAD:
  1. Abbey can be annoying sometimes.

FAVORITE QUOTE/S:
Yes, there is a word for what you've done to me; the only one that says it all.
READ IT IF:
  1. You are a lesbian teenager.
  2. You are questioning your sexuality.
  3. You like playing basketball.

Liverpool Care Pathway: Family revive man doctors wasn't worth ...

The family of a 48-year-old man have told how they rescued him from dying on the controversial Liverpool Care Pathway by reviving him with drops of water.

Andy Flanagan?s family were told that he was severely brain damaged, had organ failure and was close to death after a cardiac arrest.

They gathered at his bedside to say their goodbyes after the hospital withdrew fluids and said it was going to let him ?slip away?.

The family of Andy Flanagan (pictured with daughter Andi-Jo) were told he was severely brain damaged, had organ failure and close to death after a cardiac arrest but they rescued him from dying after he showed signs that he had not had severe brain damage

Told he was dying: The family of Andy Flanagan (pictured with daughter Andi-Jo) were told he was severely brain damaged, had organ failure and close to death after a cardiac arrest but they rescued him from dying after he showed signs that he had not had severe brain damage

But when Mr Flanagan?s sister, who is a nurse, gently moved him to change his bloodstained sheets, he started to murmur words, showing signs that he had not suffered severe brain damage.

Then, as she cleaned his face with a wet cloth, he desperately tried to suck in the moisture. The family continued their vigil at his bedside around the clock, concerned that doctors did not want to keep the patient alive.

Every ten minutes they gave him drops of water that helped him start to come round before doctors eventually agreed to put him back on a drip. Mr Flanagan recovered and returned home. He lived for another month and was able to properly say farewell to his loved ones.

His sisters last night called the Liverpool Care Pathway a ?licence to kill?.

It involves withdrawing treatment and the heavy sedation of a patient and removal of tubes providing food and fluid in the last 24 hours of their life.

Sister Lesley Flanagan called the Liverpool Care Pathway a 'licence to kill'

?Insidious?: Sister Lesley Flanagan called the Liverpool Care Pathway a ?licence to kill?

Devised in the 1990s as a means of easing pain for the dying, it has been in widespread use in the NHS in recent years.

However, critics claim it is increasingly being applied to patients without their families? knowledge and when they still have a chance of recovery.

Lesley Flanagan, 53, last night said her brother had been put on the Pathway, which she describes as ?insidious and a licence to kill?, long before he was ?ready to go?.

She said the hospital had chosen to ?give up? on Mr Flanagan,? a father of five and grandfather? of two who had been a carpenter.

Mr Flanagan, who was suffering from pancreatic cancer, was admitted to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King?s Lynn in the early hours of June 19 after he had a cardiac arrest.

When Miss Flanagan arrived at the hospital she was told that he was very ill, that his organs were shutting down and that they had taken all of the tubes from him.

She said: ?They told us that he had not got long to live and that the kindest thing to do would be to let him slip away. We did not know that they had instituted the Liverpool Care Pathway.?

?They mentioned something about a care pathway, but we didn?t perceive for a second that it was a way to kill people.

?In the evening my sister, who is a qualified nurse, arrived from Stockton. She was angry because no one had taken care of his basic needs. The bed he was in was dirty and covered with blood.?

?She asked if she could change the sheets and when she asked Andy questions, such as if they could roll him on his side, he replied with ?yes? and started to open his eyes.?

?That is when she began to suspect he had not been brain damaged. When she used a wet cloth to clean his face he tried to suck the moisture. We started to give him water from pipettes ourselves and he gradually became more awake. But we still had to campaign for the doctors to put him back on a drip.? The family also found Mr Flanagan?s medical notes were marked with ?do not resuscitate?, despite this never being discussed with them.

Miss Flanagan added: ?We stayed with him around the clock, because we were scared they were going to try to kill him again.

Mr Flanagan, who was suffering from pancreatic cancer, was admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital (pictured) after he had a cardiac arrest

Admitted: Mr Flanagan, who was suffering from pancreatic cancer, was admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital (pictured) after he had a cardiac arrest

?He was terrified of the doctors and at one point told his consultant himself, ?you tried to kill me and told my family that I wanted to die?. He went home at the end of June and lived for another month until July 25.?

Mr Flanagan?s other sister Kathy Flanagan, 57, who has worked as a nurse for 39 years, said: ?We had another five weeks with our brother ? that time was very important for us and everyone else in the family.

?Even when Andy had started to come round we had to beg the doctor to put him back on a drip and he told us that our brother did not like needles and that he was sure that he wouldn?t want to be put back on a drip.

?I think it?s very difficult for relatives to comprehend what?s going on when they?re in state of shock, grieving and hurting. People just listen to doctors and respect them and I?m not saying perhaps at the very end that it might not be appropriate, but who knows when that end stage is.?

Last night a hospital spokesman said: ?This case is subject to an official complaint and we are unable to comment at this time.?

NEW YORK (AP) ? ABC's Martha Raddatz took a forceful approach to moderating the vice presidential debate, winning some strong reviews from instant pundits on social media but some complaints from Republicans.

The first-time moderator's performance was a clear contrast to PBS' Jim Lehrer's work in last week's debate between President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. Lehrer let the presidential candidates talk almost freely, while Raddatz sought to be more specific and keep things under control.

Twitter was alight, with some calls for her to run for vice president instead of Joe Biden and Paul Ryan.

But Fox News Channel host Sean Hannity tweeted that Raddatz "is the worst moderator."

Generation of functional thyroid tissue from stem cells

ScienceDaily (Oct. 11, 2012) ? The generation of functional thyroid tissue from stem cells could allow the treatment of patients, which suffer from thyroid hormone deficiency due to defective function, or abnormal development of the thyroid gland. The team of Sabine Costagliola at the IRIBHM (Universit? Libre de Bruxelles) recently developed a protocol that allowed for the first time the efficient generation of functional thyroid tissue from stem cells in mice and published the results of their studies in the scientific journal Nature.

Thyroid hormones are a class of iodide-containing molecules that play a critical role in the regulation of various body function including growth, metabolism and heart function and that are crucial for normal brain development. The thyroid gland, an endocrine organ that has been specialized in trapping iodide, is the only organ where these hormones are produced. It is, however, of note that one out of 3000 human newborns is born with congenital hypothyroidism, a condition characterized by insufficient production of thyroid hormones. In the absence of a medical treatment with thyroid hormones -- initiated during the first days after birth -- the child will be affected by an irreversible mental retardation. Moreover, a life-long hormonal treatment is necessary in order to maintain proper regulation of growth and general metabolism.

By employing a protocol in which two important genes can be transiently induced in undifferentiated stem cells, the researchers at IRIBHM were able to efficiently push the differentiation of stem cells into thyrocytes, the primary cell type responsible for thyroid hormone production in the thyroid gland.

A first exciting finding of these studies was the development of functional thyroid tissue already within the culture dishes. As a next step, the team of Sabine Costagliola transplanted the stem-cell-derived thyrocytes into mice lacking a functional thyroid gland. Four weeks after transplantation, the researchers observed that transplanted mice had re-established normal levels of thyroid hormones in their blood and were rescued from the symptoms associated with thyroid hormone deficiency. These findings have several important implications. First, the cell system employed by the IRIBHM group provides a vital tool to better characterize the molecular processes associated with embryonic thyroid development. Second, the results of the transplantation studies open new avenues for the treatment of thyroid hormone deficiency but also for the replacement of thyroid tissue in patients suffering from thyroid cancer.

The researchers are currently developing a similar protocol based on human stem cells and explore ways to generate functional human thyroid tissue by reprogramming pluripotent stem cells (iPS) derived from skin cells.

Disabled vet gets home remodel | KXAN.com

AUSTIN (KXAN) - An army of volunteers landed on a South Austin home ready to carry out an important mission.

"Personally it's an honor to be able to give back to these veterans who have served us all," said Home Depot volunteer Joe Wimberly.

Josh Kelly, a medic in Afghanistan and a silver star recipient, is a disabled veteran.

Kelly joined the U.S. Army after Sept. 11 at age 30.

Kelly was injured when the humvee he was in was blown up by a grenade, trapping him under and crushing his right arm. But the damage wasn't just to his arm.

"It traveled upstream rather than the issue with just the hand and it altered the bassle gangrene of my brain," said Kelly, recipient of the home improvement donation. "I want to get up and do the things the normal guy wants to do and that's the hard part for me, the physical limitations."

Home improvements would have been unthinkable without the help of dozens of helping hands from The Home Depot Foundation and Heroes Night Out. These volunteers are dedicated to making his life easier -- tackling everything from landscaping to putting in new floors.

But behind these scenes there's a whole other story. While the death rate has dropped for combat soldiers in the last 60 to 70 years, more of them are coming back with traumatic injuries, amputations and other life changing disabilities.

"If this event had happened to Josh in the Vietnam War, there's no way he would have made it back," said John Burkhardt of the Military Order of Purple Hearts Chapter 1919.

But Kelly and thousands of other veterans are coming back to a world not equipped to handle their needs and the cost of making their homes handicap accessible is a financial burden that many cannot afford.

But on this Tuesday morning, people behind this building blitz are trying to bridge the gap, so Kelly can focus on the most important things in life.

Goodbye, and many thanks, to my favorite mutual fund ever - The ...

FORTUNE -- There are times when an innovative and brilliantly designed product takes the world by storm and makes a fortune for its creators and marketers. Think iPhone. And then there are times when an innovative and brilliantly designed product just doesn't catch on. Think of the Royce Select Fund.

Never heard of Royce Select? Almost no one has. Which is the problem. So let me share with you the story about how a pioneering mutual fund that had a uniquely ethical and fair fee structure and was extremely lucrative for its long-term shareholders (including me) came and went while attracting almost no notice from the investing public.

Our tale begins in 1998 with mutual fund pioneer Chuck Royce, who was looking for a way to better align fund investors' interests with managers' interests. Managers typically get a fee based on the fund's size, and investors absorb its expenses. Even if investors get stomped, the managers still get their fee. Royce Select was designed to be different. Royce & Associates (now owned by Legg Mason (LM)) would get 12.5% of any profits that investors made, and would absorb all the expenses. If the fund's value declined after the managers took a fee, they wouldn't get any additional fees until the fund rose above the "high-water mark" at which the last fee had been paid.

MORE:?How to survive a Wall Street meltdown

"I did it because I personally believed that this was a highly ethical way of entering into a profit-sharing arrangement with our customers," Chuck Royce told me. "There were drumbeats about hedge funds being the hot new investment vehicle, and I wanted to show that the best aspects of a hedge fund could be married to a [mutual] fund."

In fact, Royce Select was better for investors than a hedge fund, which typically charges a 2%-of-assets annual fee and takes 20% of profits above that. Royce, by contrast, had no annual fee and took only 12.5% of the profits.

Those of us who stumbled across Royce Select -- a friend told me about it -- did very well. Through Oct. 1, I had made about 450% in capital gains and reinvested dividends on my initial March 15, 1999, investment. That's about eight times the 57% that Wilshire Associates says the overall U.S. stock market returned during that period.

But despite its excellent long-term returns, the fund couldn't attract much in the way of assets. That's partly because it wasn't really marketed well, unlike the iPhone. And at least partly because the Securities and Exchange Commission severely restricts the investors allowed to buy funds that charge a variable fee.

The SEC requires you to be a (presumably sophisticated) "qualified investor" -- one with at least $2 million of assets -- in order to buy into a variable-fee fund. The idea, an SEC news release explains, is to make sure that unsophisticated investors don't fall prey to "'heads I win, tails you lose' arrangements in which the adviser has everything to gain if successful, and little if anything to lose if not."

MORE:?Tech investing's East Coast man

In addition to limiting the investor pool, the "qualified investors" requirement begat a ton of paperwork. I did my own -- but Royce had begun working through investment advisers, and there was no provision in Select's no-load, no-marketing-fee structure to compensate them for all that effort. So Royce Select (now Royce Select I (RYSFX)) and the four subsequent Select funds didn't catch on, and never attained critical mass.

When fund shareholders approved converting Select I to a conventional fee-plus-expenses structure on Sept. 28 -- I voted no -- it had only $49 million of assets, a pittance for a fund with a fine long-term record. Assets of the four other Select funds totaled less than $30 million. All five funds are now open to any investor who can write a check.

"You can't say I didn't stick with it," Chuck Royce told me as we sat in his office eating cookies and bidding a sad farewell to Royce Select's unique fee structure, which had lasted almost 14 years. "Maybe you and I can start an alumni fund," he quipped. I'd definitely be up for that. But I don't think the market would. Too bad.

Home Improvement Using Interior Design | Home Improvement ...

Exactly what does interior design imply to you? Once on a time, home design had been a magical, highly-skilled job that was usually performed by top design specialists. Today, nevertheless, much more and much more of us are taking up interior design as a hobby in its own right. Fans of home design not just produce beautiful interiors in their very own homes; they are taking their own design skills to change the interior of their own friends? houses, too. However exactly what does that say regarding us as people? What is it that hard disks individuals to the innovative?

The response is very close at hand ? in reality, it?s right inside our personal mind. In a world where self-expression is often hard ? and often looked down on ? home design offers a remarkably fulfilling outlet. Mixing colors and textures to design or re-design a tired-looking interior offers a sense of actual accomplishment; a launch from everyday life. It?s the quietest, most reserved individuals who fall in love along with home design. For all of them, interior design is actually a ideal appearing board: a way of projecting their own innermost emotions in to a space that is screaming for design. Ask these people how they are sensation, and they will probably have difficulty indicating their interior emotions. However show all of them a bare room? and watch their own design skills take flight as they express their own joy, rage, sadness and wish via beautiful design and stunning interior creativeness.

Interior design doesn?t have to end up being a bodily pastime, of course. Television today comes complete with programmes regarding design. Famous experts such as Lawrence Llewellyn-Bowen have become household names ? and what better way to whilst away a good evening than settling down to watch your favorite design programme? Seeing a home design professional transform a house that was once a shell offers a real escape from everyday life ? not to mention giving you ideas and inspiration to re-think your own interior. Watching a home design program also offers an intriguing understanding of the minds of the design specialists on their own. Llewellyn-Bowen, for example, is actually a home design guru, and he?s also a really remarkable, flamboyant gentleman. However look very carefully from their idea, and you?ll see an additional side to him. His design exhibits a real understanding of his clients? mind: Llewellyn-Bowen?s design is actually a ideal to the outside representation of individuals interior characters.

And it?s this particular serious mindset and sensitivity that we novice interior design enthusiasts lock on to. It might be a difficult world available, but with interior design as an outlet, we will continually be in contact with this emotions.

Filler words are an ugly way to join two parts of your speech together

As we all strive to become better speakers, we tend to focus on the big issues: how to write a great speech, how to use our bodies to connect with our audience, etc. However, it turns out that sometimes it can be the little things that can trip us up. Things like using filler words in our speech.

Why Do We Use Filler Words?

Using filler words during a speech is a bad idea. The reasons that this is bad are actually pretty simple. Once your audience uses their listening skills and realizes that you are using words like ?umm?, ?like?, and ?you know? in your speech then they will become distracted as they start to listen for the next time that you use one of these words.

If they start to do this, then they won?t be able to hear anything else that you are saying no matter what clever presentation tips you use. The message that you were trying to share with your audience will be completely lost.

The reason that you or I might be using filler words is because our brain is running so much faster than our mouth is. As we go searching for the next thing that we want to say, our mouth runs out of words to say while the brain is off thinking up new ideas. Nobody likes to be silent during a speech so we ?fill in? the gaps with filler words just to keep making noise. Never a good idea.

How Can We Stop Using Filler Words?

As speakers we want to find ways to stop using filler words. What this all comes down to is identifying ways that we can get our brain and our mouth to operate at the same speed.

One of the first things that we can do to reduce the number of filler words that we?ll end up using during our next speech is to find ways to boost our confidence during our next speech. This can be as simple as reminding ourselves that our audience wants up to succeed. Realizing this make us less nervous and will reduce our need to add filler words to reduce the silence in our speech.

Often times we?ll see speakers who are not prepared to give a speech use many filler words. The reason that they are doing this is because during their speech they can become distracted or uneasy and when this happens the filler words show up in force. Take the time to practice your next speech and this won?t be a problem.

Finally, you can?t fix what you can?t see. Have a friend or a coworker listen to you deliver your speech. Show them what to look for and have them put their hand in the air every time you use a filler word. You?ll be amazed at how often you are using filler words ? at first. The nice thing about having a friend make you aware of this problem is how quickly it will go away once you have this awareness.

What Does All Of This Mean For You?

We all know about the importance of public speaking; however, even the best speakers can get tripped up if they use too many filler words. Filler words are unnecessary and they distract our audience from paying attention to the main message of our speech. As speakers, we need to find ways to eliminate filler words from our speeches so that our audiences can experience the full benefit of the benefits of public speaking.

There are a number of ways to go about doing this. The first and the simplest is to become confidant about what you are talking about. The next is to take the time to practice your speech enough ? in this case practice does make perfect. Finally, you need a friend who will listen to your speech and give your feedback on your use of filler words.

The good news about filler words is that once we become aware that we?re using them, they?ll go away quickly. Take the time to work on eliminating them from your next speech and you?ll be amazed at how much more of an effective speaker you will become!

What We?ll Be Talking About Next Time

Being asked to speak before an international audience can be a big complement ? not that many speakers can do this successfully. If you choose to make the most of your audience?s listening skills and work some humor into your speech, well then more power to you. However, you?ve got quite the challenge lying before you: forget presentation tips, how are you going to make sure that what is funny to you is going to be able to cross international borders and arrive funny when it gets to the other side?

China vs. Japan: Global economy could be the loser

Str / AFP - Getty Images

What the fuss is all about. A dispute over these islands, known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China in the East China Sea, could drag the global economy down with it.

By John W. Schoen, NBC News

A deepening dispute between China and Japan over a cluster of tiny uninhabited islands, some no bigger than rocks jutting out of the East China Sea, threatens to throw one more (big) monkey wrench into the slowing machinery of the global economy.

The origins of the dispute date back centuries but came to a head last month?after Japan?nationalized the tiny islands, called Senkaku in Japan, the world's No. 3 economy,?and Diaoyu in China, the world's No. 2 economy. The move set off violent protests in at least two dozen Chinese cities.?Angry mobs torched a Panasonic factory,?looted several Japanese retail outlets and burned Toyota and Honda car dealerships.

The resulting boycott of Japanese goods has brought a sharp contraction in Japanese exports to mainland China as the gunboat confrontation on the high seas has morphed into a wider economic front. On Tuesday, Japanese carmakers reported sales cratered in September ?- Toyota's numbers were cut in half ?- in what some analysts warn is just a preview of the looming fallout from the high-stakes confrontation. ?

As the Asia-Pacific economy has become?increasingly interdependent, other countries could soon feel the blowback, including Europe and the U.S., both of which have economic woes of their own.

?The fallout is increasing and it?s not the way forward for the region,? said Rajiv Biswas, Asia-Pacific chief economist at IHS Global Insight. ?The impact on the region could be significant.?

The impact of a Chinese boycott would fall hardest on Japan, where economic growth slowed sharply in the second quarter and is expected to continue to decline. China represents an important market for Japan?s export-reliant economy. Last year, roughly 20 percent of Japanese semiconductor exports were sold to Chinese manufacturers.

?This (economic conflict) can and will cost the woebegone Japanese economy dearly it the form of export,? said Carl Weinberg, chief economist at High Frequency Economics.

Chinese visitors have also become an increasingly important part of the Japanese tourism industry, according to Parag Khanna, an economist and senior researcher at the New America Foundation.

?A large part of the increase in tourism to Japan in recent years has been from China because of diminished visa restrictions,? he said. ?If that goes down, it?s really a double whammy for Japan at a time when they don?t really need that.?

Beyond the long-standing political hostilities, the fight over these barren islands is about more than a tiny patch of remote real estate. The battle for control includes the international rights to develop substantial underwater oil and natural gas, which are critical resources to both countries? energy-hungry economies.

Natural resources could also become a weapon for the Chinese, who control an estimated 90 percent of a series of so-called rare earth elements ? minerals with almost-unpronounceable names that are critical to the production of everything from hybrid cars to flat-panel TVs. Last month, the Chinese government cut the number of mining permits for rare earth elements by a third. By tightening exports of those materials, China could leave Japanese manufacturers scrambling to head off shortages, or paying higher prices.

But an economic strike against Japan?s supply chain could quickly backfire on Beijing and reverberate throughout the Chinese economy, according to Biswas.

?The bigger concern is the longer term impact on supply chains,? he said. ?A lot of Japanese investment -- about $80 billion -- has gone into China in the last 15 years and a lot of that is supply chain for their big multinationals.?

?If they decide to move away from China, that?s going to hurt Chinese jobs as well,? he added.

No matter who comes out on top in this Asian economic slugfest, the global economy can ill-afford any further slowdown in trade, especially one involving two of the world?s largest economies. Last month, the World Trade Organization said global trade will grow by just 2.5 percent this year, dragged down by Europe to less than half of the previous 20-year average. That?s down from a prior estimate of 3.7 percent made in April. The WTO also cut its growth forecast for 2013 global trade to 4.5 percent growth from 5.6 percent.

With the global engine of trade slowing, the outlook for the overall economy is also darkening. On Tuesday, officials at the International Monetary Fund, meeting in Tokyo, said the global economic slowdown is worsening and cut their growth forecasts for the second time since April. The IMF warned both U.S. and European policymakers that failure to fix their economic ills would prolong the slump. What little momentum exists is coming primarily from central banks, the IMF said in its World Economic Outlook

The IMF cut its forecast for world GDP growth this year to 3.3 percent, down from 3.5 percent in April.

Some private economists think those numbers will likely come down even further.

?While the IMF has reduced its forecast for next year, we believe it is still over-optimistic about the chances of a global recovery,? said Andrew Kenningham, senior global economist at Capital Economics.

CNBC's Phil LeBeau reports Japanese carmakers Toyota, Nissan and Honda are cutting their China production by 50 percent.

Gay marriage debate: a secular case against same-sex marriage ...

Marriage and family

Note: this post has a twin! Its companion post on?a secular case against abortion rights?is here.

I can?t possible cover everything, but I will make three arguments.

  1. Same-sex marriage is bad for children
  2. Same-sex marriage is bad for civil society and business
  3. Same-sex marriage is bad for public health

Let?s look at these in order.

1. SSM is bad for children

Traditional marriage is beneficial for children for 4 reasons:

  • traditional marriages last longer than same-sex unions
  • traditional marriages are more peaceful than same-sex unions
  • traditional marriages offer children male and female influences
  • traditional marriages model life-long love between men and women

Space permits me to only discuss the first two, using?this paper from the Family Research Council, which cites data from mainstream sources like the Department of Justice, peer-reviewed studies, etc.

That research paper compares same-sex couples and heterosexual married couples, in the following ways:

  • relationship duration
  • monogamy vs. promiscuity
  • relationship commitment
  • number of children being raised
  • health risks
  • rates of intimate partner violence

It turns out that same-sex unions are not as good for children as traditional marriage, on those measures.

Relationship duration

Claim: about 58% of traditional marriages last longer than 20 years.

Source: National Center for Health Statistics, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2001)

Claim: about 5% of same-sex unions last longer than 20 years.

Source: 2003-2004 Gay/Lesbian Consumer Online Census

Monogamy vs Promiscuity

Claim: 85% of married women and 75.5% of married men report being faithful to their spouses. For homosexual males, the number is 4.5%

Sources: Laumann, The Social Organization of Sexuality, 216; McWhirter and Mattison, The Male Couple: How Relationships Develop (1984): 252-253; Wiederman, ?Extramarital Sex,? 170.

Rates of intimate partner violence

Intimate Partner Violence

Married men and women experience significantly less intimate partner violence than do homosexual men and women.

Sources: ?Extent, Nature, and Consequences of Intimate Partner Violence,? U.S. Department of Justice: Office of Justice Programs: 30; ?Intimate Partner Violence,? Bureau of Justice Statistics Special Report:11.

There is a lot more evidence cited in the research paper.?Read the whole thing.

Consider this article?by?Dr. Trayce Hansen?about which family configuration is best for children. The title is ?Same-Sex Marriage: Not in the Best Interest of Children?.

Excerpt:

Only mother-father families afford children the opportunity to develop relationships with a parent of the same, as well as the opposite sex. Relationships with both sexes early in life make it easier and more comfortable for a child to relate to both sexes later in life. Overall, having a relationship with both a male and female parent increases the likelihood that a child will have successful social and romantic relationships during his or her life.(5)

Moreover, existing research on children reared by homosexuals is not only scientifically flawed and extremely limited?(6,7,8)?but some of it actually indicates that those children are at increased risk for a variety of negative outcomes.(6)?Other studies find that homosexually parented children are more likely to experiment sexually, experience sexual confusion, and engage in homosexual and bisexual behavior themselves.(5,6,9)?And for those children who later engage in non-heterosexual behavior, extensive research reveals they are more likely to suffer from psychiatric disorders, abuse alcohol and drugs,?(10)?attempt suicide,?(11)?experience domestic violence and sexual assault,?(12)?and are at increased risk for chronic diseases, AIDS, and shortened life spans.(13,14,15)

It shouldn?t be surprising that studies find children reared by homosexuals are more likely to engage in homosexual behavior themselves?(16,9,17)?since extensive worldwide research reveals homosexuality is primarily environmentally induced. Specifically, social and/or family factors, as well as permissive environments which affirm homosexuality, play major environmental roles in the development of homosexual behavior.(18,19,20,21)

The rest of the article, with references, is here.

Research from the Heritage Foundation shows that?traditional marriage is the safest place for women and children?- women and children are much less likely to be the victims of domestic violence or violent crime when they are in a married home. Another Heritage Foundation research paper shows that?child poverty is greatly reduced when children grow up in a married home.

So what do we learn from this? The evidence is clear: traditional marriage is better for children than same-sex marriage.

2. SSM is bad for civil society and business

SSM will?increase?the power of the state to regulate civil society and business. Let me quickly summarize the evidence for this to give you an idea how it would work, using?Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse?s testimony to the Rhode Island legislature.

Excerpt:

Far from limiting the power of the state, your version of equality has become a tool for the hostile takeover of civil society by the state. Churches are already under attack for daring to dissent from the new state-imposed Orthodoxy that marriage is whatever the government says it is.7

Parents are losing the right to direct the education of their own children.8 Foster parents in the UK must submit to the state?s views about marriage.9 Reputable adoption agencies have been put out of business.

And the pettiness of some of the complaints brought by same sex couples is simply staggering. Christian bed and breakfast owners have been sued for not allowing unmarried couples to stay in double rooms. They would have gladly rented them separate rooms, but that was not good enough for the thought police.10 Same sex couples have brought legal complaints against wedding photographers, as if there were a constitutional right to have your picture taken by the person of your choice.11

The details of the events she is describing can be found in?the references for her speech.

Here are a few more examples of this infringement on civil society and business:

Notice how same-sex marriage impacts businesses, clergy, non-profits, etc. and even leads to polygamy. Once you decide that marriage is not about putting guidelines around sex and producing and nurturing the next generation, but about letting consenting adults do whatever they want, then there are no rules.

Now consider this article about?how the breakdown of marriage changes society and government, written by Dr. Frank Turek.

Excerpt:

The law is a great teacher, and same sex marriage will teach future generations that marriage is not about children but about coupling. When marriage becomes nothing more than coupling, fewer people will get married to have children.

So what? People will still have children, of course, but many more of them out-of wedlock. That?s a disaster for everyone. Children will be hurt because illegitimate?parents?(there are no illegitimate children)?often never form a family, and those that ?shack up? break up at a rate two to three times that of married parents.?Society will be hurt because illegitimacy starts a chain of negative effects that fall like dominoes?illegitimacy leads to poverty, crime, and higher welfare costs which lead to bigger government, higher taxes, and a slower economy.

Are these just the hysterical cries of an alarmist? No. We can see the connection between same-sex marriage and illegitimacy in Scandinavian countries. Norway, for example, has had de-facto same-sex marriage since the early nineties. In Nordland, the most liberal county of Norway, where they fly ?gay? rainbow flags over their churches, out-of-wedlock births have soared?more than 80percent of women giving birth for the first time, and nearly 70 percent of?all?children, are born out of wedlock! Across all of Norway, illegitimacy rose from 39 percent to 50 percent in the first decade of same-sex marriage.

Anthropologist Stanley Kurtz writes,?When we look at Nordland and Nord-Troendelag ? the Vermont and Massachusetts of Norway ? we are peering as far as we can into the future of marriage in a world where gay marriage is almost totally accepted. What we see is a place where marriage itself has almost totally disappeared.? He asserts that ?Scandinavian gay marriage has driven home the message that marriage itself is outdated, and that virtually any family form, including out-of-wedlock parenthood, is acceptable.? But it?s not just Norway. Blankenhorn reports this same trend in other countries. International surveys show that same-sex marriage and the erosion of traditional marriage tend to go together.?Traditional marriage is weakest and illegitimacy strongest wherever same-sex marriage is legal.?

You might say, ?Correlation doesn?t always indicate causation!? Yes, but often it does. Is there any doubt that liberalizing marriage laws impacts society for the worse? You need look no further than the last 40 years of no-fault divorce laws in the United States (family disintegration destroys lives and now costs taxpayers $112 billion per year!).

No-fault divorce laws began in one state, California, and then spread to rest of the country. Those liberalized divorce laws helped change our attitudes and behaviors about the?permanence?of marriage. There?s no question that liberalized marriage laws will help change our attitudes and behaviors about the?purpose?of marriage. The law is a great teacher, and if same-sex marriage advocates have their way, children will be expelled from the lesson on marriage.

So there are financial and social costs to the breakdown of marriage. The more government has to spend to deal with the problems SSM creates, the higher taxes will go, and the less money is left in the hands of working families to accomplish their own plans.

To be fair, I think that sex education and no-fault divorce are worse threats to marriage than same-sex marriage. I would like to see more research to persuade people that chastity before marriage is important, like?this research?, so that we could see our way clear to push for policies that encourage young people to wait longer before having sex. And I would like to see other measures taken to strengthen marriage from no-fault divorce, such as a shared parenting laws. But SSM is the current topic, so I?ll stick with that here.

3. SSM is bad for public health

Now we come to the sensitive part. We should not be encouraging SSM because it normalizes homosexuality and the homosexual lifestyle is associated with harmful behaviors.

Consider?this recent Centers for Disease Control study. Life Site News?discusses the findings in this article.

Excerpt:

Students who report being gay or bisexual are more likely than heterosexual students to engage in unhealthy risk behaviors such as tobacco use, alcohol and other drug use, sexual risk behaviors, suicidal behaviors, and violence, according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The study reported: ?the prevalence among gay or lesbian students was higher than the prevalence among heterosexual students for a median of 63.8% of all the risk behaviors measured, and the prevalence among bisexual students was higher than the prevalence among heterosexual students for a median of 76.0% of all the risk behaviors measured.?

Specifically, gay or lesbian students had higher rates for seven of the 10 health risk categories (behaviors that contribute to violence, behaviors related to attempted suicide, tobacco use, alcohol use, other drug use, sexual behaviors, and weight management).

The study also found that only 1.3% of students self-identified as gay or lesbian at the eight sites where they were asked their ?sexual identity.? A median of 3.7% said they were bisexual.

Researchers analyzed data from Youth Risk Behavior Surveys conducted during 2001?2009 in seven states and six large urban school districts. These sites collected data on high school students? sexual identity (heterosexual, gay or lesbian, bisexual, or unsure), sex of sexual contacts (sexual contact with the opposite sex only, with the same sex only, or with both sexes), or both.

The study, ?Sexual Identity, Sex of Sexual Contacts, and Health Risk Behaviors Among Students in Grades 9?12 in Selected Sites?Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance, United States, 2001?2009,? was published as a Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report Surveillance Summary.

Dr. Trayce Hansen summarizes some of the previously?published research on the health care effects of the gay lifestyle.

Excerpt:

Non-heterosexual behavior leads to increased risk of psychological and physical disorders

Sadly, the research is also clear that individuals who adopt non-heterosexual lifestyles are more likely to suffer from a host of negative outcomes including psychiatric disorders, alcohol and drug abuse, suicide attempts, domestic violence and sexual assault, and increased risk for chronic diseases, AIDS, and shortened lifespan. Schools should not affirm and thereby encourage young people to adopt lifestyles more likely to lead to such devastation. (To review these specific studies see references 5-10 below).

But we should definitely not lie to people about the health effects of smoking. It does no good to tell people that dangerous things are not really dangerous. I would rather hurt someone?s feelings gently by telling them the truth than see them suffer real harm after telling them lies.

  2. Same-sex marriage is bad for civil society and business
  3. Same-sex marriage is bad for public health
