Nigeria's latest Earth observation satellites have returned their first pictures.

The spacecraft, launched on 17 August, give the African nation a powerful new capability to map its own lands and other parts of the globe.

NigeriaSat-2 and NigeriaSat-X will also assist the Disaster Monitoring Constellation.

This UK-managed fleet of spacecraft is used to picture regions of the Earth gripped by natural calamities.

These might be catastrophic floods or a big earthquake. Images sent down from space will often be critical to organising an effective emergency response.

The first picture released from the Nigerian pair is of New Zealand's biggest city, Auckland.

It was acquired by NigeriaSat-X, and reveals the buildings and the landscape surrounding this major urban centre.

The satellite is equipped with a multi-spectral imager for general mapping, agricultural monitoring and disaster relief work.

SSTL Executive Chairman, Sir Martin Sweeting, commented: "NigeriaSat-X is the product of Nigeria's training and development programme here at Surrey.

"It is a great credit to NASRDA (National Space Research and Development Agency) and their engineers that this satellite is performing well and its operations are progressing so quickly.

"These highly skilled engineers will not only help Nigeria to manage its resources, but also bootstrap its fledgling high-tech economy alongside a growing nucleus of highly trained people."

A first picture should be released from NigeriaSat-2 in the coming days. This is a much more powerful platform, able to resolve details on the Earth's surface just 2.5m across.

Few countries in the world have access to such a capability.

At question is language pertaining to the age of manufactured homes placed within their city limits. Discussion arose last month after property owner Robin Guillot asked to move a 13-year-old ?mobile home? already inside the city limits to her vacant lot along Simoneaux Lane.? The current ordinance does not allow homes manufactured more than 12 years ago to be placed within the city limits.

(Editor?s note: the enhanced per-emption that the Manufactured Housing Improvement Act of 2000 (MHIA 2000) is supposed to help deal with issues such as this one. Until and unless the implementation of the law is better understood and enforced by local jurisdictions, the rights of manufactured home owners and Industry members involved in selling manufactured homes will be harmed.? Owner of landmark South Philly cheesesteak stand dies

PHILADELPHIA?? Joey Vento, owner of a landmark south Philadelphia cheesesteak stand who once told customers to order in English, has died. He was 71.

Vento's nephew, Joseph Perno, a manager at Geno's Steaks, told The Associated Press that Vento had a massive heart attack and died Tuesday.

Perno said family members had just gotten out of the hospital and would not be making any immediate statements.

In November, Perno said Vento had been diagnosed with colon/rectal cancer a few months earlier and was to have surgery at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan.

Longtime friend Domenic Chiavaroli, 65, told the Philadelphia Daily News that Vento had been at the shop that morning, as he was every morning before opening, but went home to Shamong, N.J., later in the day and told his wife that he wasn't feeling well.

"I've been coming here since 1967," he said. "Joe was a good guy. He always tried to help everybody."

Chiavaroli said Vento was at the shop this morning, as he was every morning before it opened. Chiavaroli talked with Vento about a recent renovation inside the shop.

According to Geno's website, Vento learned the cheesesteak business from his father, who had opened Jim's Steaks in the early 1940s, and opened Geno's in 1966 "with $6 in his pocket, two boxes of steaks and some hot dogs."

He came up with the name after seeing a broken door in the back of his store upon which a neighborhood boy named Gino had painted his name, and he changed it to Geno's in order not to conflict with a food chain of the era, according to the site. The south Philadelphia location, however, was a given, since "he figured that if he was going to sell a steak, he had to be where they were already eating them."

Geno's and its chief rival across the street, Pat's King of Steaks, have become the focus of an area described as "ground zero for cheesesteaks," a traditionally Italian community that has grown more diverse with an influx of immigrants from Asia and Latin America.

In June 2006, Vento and Geno's made headlines over two small signs posted at the shop stating, "This is AMERICA: WHEN ORDERING 'SPEAK ENGLISH.'" Vento said he posted the signs due to concerns over the debate on immigration reform and the increasing number of people who couldn't order in English.

Vento said he never refused service to anyone because they couldn't speak English, but critics argued that the signs discouraged customers of certain backgrounds from eating at the shop.

Amid extensive publicity, the city's Commission on Human Relations began looking into whether Vento was violating Philadelphia's ordinance banning discrimination in employment, public accommodation and housing on the basis of race, ethnicity or sexual orientation. The following year, the commission found probable cause against Geno's for discrimination, alleging that the policy discouraged customers of certain backgrounds from eating there.

The case then went to a public hearing, where an attorney for the commission argued that the sign was about intimidation, not political speech. The matter then went to the three-member panel, which ruled 2-1 in March 2008 that the signs did not violate the ordinance.

10 things to do with a $100 TouchPad

The TouchPad may not be the perfect tablet, but it is selling for $100 right now, and it's going fast. Actually, it's pretty much gone. But if you did manage to snag one, here are?10 good uses for it.

1. E-book reader
The TouchPad has a mighty fine Kindle app, but at only $99 it's cheaper than even the Wi-Fi-only Kindle (at $140), and it does a lot more. Sure, the screen may not be as easy on the eyes as E-ink, but you can read it in the dark, so there's that.

2. Music player
Guess what? The TouchPad, with its speakers from Beats By Dre, has the best speakers on any tablet we've ever tested. With so many music-streaming services out there and tons of good cloud music options, you could set this up somewhere in your house as a dedicated music streamer. Or just load up the internal storage with your own music and head out the door.

3. News reader
My morning routine: I load up a bunch of my RSS feeds on my phone while I'm walking to the train, and then I read these feeds while underground on my way to Gizmodo HQ. The TouchPad has a sweet read-it-later app called Paper Mache?(basically webOS's answer to Instapaper), and it should get you up to speed during your morning commute without cramping your eyeballs.

4. Airplane movie viewer
Unless I'm absolutely desperate, I refuse to pay for a movie on an airplane. Pay $5 to $10 to watch a movie on a 5-inch screen on the seat in front of me? Pass. Instead, load up your TouchPad with a flick or two, and you're ready to fly the friendly skies.

5. Recipe book
As Matt suggested earlier, load up Epicurious, bring that baby into the kitchen and get cookin'. Spill a little sauce on it? Whatever! You only paid 99 bucks for it. You would cry the tears of a thousand lonely grandmas if you got tahini on your iPad 2.

6. Put Android on it
This will make Matt Buchanan scream in ring-wraith-like rage, but it must be said: development is under way to port Android (first 2.3 and then 3.x) over to the TouchPad. I'm fairly certain that Matt would argue that WebOS on tablets is better than Android on tablets, and in many ways I'd agree, but Android has the distinct advantage of having a pulse, whereas WebOS is pushing up the daisies. If it's important to you that you keep getting software updates to keep up with the Joneses, then this might be something to consider (once it's ready). If not, I wouldn't worry about it.

7. Tablet for your toddler
Do you bristle every time you kid goes near your fancy, expensive tablet? Instead, take your cheapo TouchPad and bookmark a ton of kids websites. It doesn't matter if there aren't a ton of native kids apps, because it plays Flash games! Just go to Kongregate or some such site and bookmark a ton of kid-appropriate games. It'll save you a headache during car trips and you won't care if he bashes it with his plastic hammer.

8. Dedicated toilet tablet
I may lose you here. I'm OK with that. Nobody likes to talk about it, but everybody uses their phones while they're taking a crap. Wouldn't you rather have a larger display while sitting there? Yes, it's kinda gross, but your touchscreen is already supposedly more bacteria-covered than most public toilet seats. Just keep a bottle of hand sanitizer next to it. And hide it when you have company.

9. Couch tab
I have a certain friend who comes over a lot and while we're watching TV, he grabs my laptop to check his Facebook and read up on his favorite blogs, and I will not be able to get my hands on it again for the rest of the night.
