Article by Casey Trillbar

Traveling without insurance can be detrimental to the enjoyment of your vacation and to those traveling with you. In addition to this, traveling without insurance can also mean a loss of valuable luggage which will not be replaced. Many people spend months saving for a vacation before the time for the vacation finally arrives. Once it does arrive, they feel that they cannot afford traveler?s insurance because of all the other costs they will bear the burden of.

It is extremely understandable that people who travel on a vacation have saved for months for are budget conscious and want to stretch their dollars as far as they will go. This is even more the reason to invest the small amount of money for travelers? insurance. Travelers? insurance will help you out in a crunch during flight delays, car rentals that are not available when they were supposed to be available, and for hotel and motel accommodations that were overbooked and leave you stranded with no place to stay.

Losing luggage during a vacation can cause untold amounts of inconvenience and duress. People often travel with important prescription medications which can be extremely costly to replace. People travel with expensive electronics such as cell phones, camcorders, laptops, business equipment, cameras, music players, and more. Losing these items can be very difficult to replace, especially when you have spent all your extra money on the vacation itself. Most working class people have saved tediously to be able to afford a luxurious vacation. Travelers? insurance will also often cover medical expenses while you are abroad or while you are in another part of the country. When traveling to a foreign place, it is difficult to tell what type of virus you may come in contact with. Many people who travel are hospitalized with migraines, flues, infections, and viral illnesses which leave them in detriment during parts of their vacation. Travelers? insurance can help to bear some of the burden through this difficult circumstance by making it possible for you to receive appropriate medical care while you are on vacation.

If you are planning an upcoming vacation, travelers? insurance can be an immense relief and worry taken from your shoulders. When you go on vacation, the very last thing you want to worry about is something going wrong. However, if something does go wrong, you can relax and let your travelers? insurance take care of the problems. This will provide a financial relief which will allow you to continue to enjoy your vacation instead of using your remaining funds to correct the situation.

The next time you plan a vacation, consult with your local insurance office or price compare through online insurance companies to discover which one can offer you the most travelers? coverage at the most affordable rate for your next holiday vacation.

Premier League chairman apologizes for FIFA rant

(AP) ? The chairman of the Premier League accused FIFA and UEFA of stealing the game of soccer from the English and derided his Qatari hosts' restrictions on selling alcohol before tumbling into a fountain at an official dinner Wednesday.

The rants by Dave Richards, who is also a senior Football Association board member, were quickly denounced by the Premier League and English soccer's governing body.

Richards was later forced into an embarrassing apology for "any negativity" toward FIFA and UEFA while insisting his comments were "intended to be lighthearted."

Richards did provoke laughter at the dinner reception as delegates were still digesting his comments. At Doha's Museum of Islamic Art, he slipped and tumbled knee-deep into a museum pool and had to be helped by Bolton chairman Phil Gartside, a fellow FA board member.

"We were walking across to our table in a dark courtyard area," Gartside told the BBC. "There were three fountain areas nearby, no pool. They had switched off the lights. He thought he was stepping on to flat marble, but his foot went down into the water. He fell over and hurt his leg quite badly."

During his speech, Richards repeatedly reminded an audience which included FIFA Vice President Prince Ali Bin Hussein of Jordan that the world had England to thank for soccer.

"England gave the world football. It gave the best legacy anyone could give. We gave them the game," Richards said. "For 50 years, we owned the game ... we were the governance of the game. We wrote the rules, designed the pitches and everything else.

"Then, 50 years later, some guy came along and said you're liars and they actually stole it. It was called FIFA. Fifty years later, another gang came along called UEFA and stole a bit more."

Prince Ali then reminded Richards that there was still a debate over whether the Chinese or the English invented the sport, but the 68-year-old Richards leapt to the defense of his country.

"It started in Sheffield 150 years ago ...," Richards said, his voice rising. "We started the game and wrote the rules and took it to the world. The Chinese may say they own it but the British own it and we gave it to the rest of the world."

Prince Ali tried to defuse the tension by saying the game is owned by everyone, not just one country.

But Richards' comments could set back the FA's attempts to rebuild relations with FIFA after chairman David Bernstein tried to block President Sepp Blatter's re-election last year.

English soccer's governing body quickly distanced itself from Richards.

"Sir Dave Richards is not representing the FA at this conference and his personal views are in no way shared or endorsed by the FA," a statement said. "The FA greatly values its relationships with FIFA and UEFA, which it is working hard to strengthen."

The Premier League also disassociated itself from its chairman's comments.

"Sir Dave is attending the conference in a private and personal capacity and his comments in no way reflect the views of the Premier League," the league said in a statement.

Richards later apologized.

"I was expressing my personal views and not those of any organization I represent," he said in a statement. "My comments on the heritage of the game were intended to be lighthearted.

"They clearly have not come across in that way and I sincerely regret making them and any resulting negativity that may have been interpreted towards FIFA and UEFA. I will be writing to both organizations in these terms."

Richards had attended the conference about new frontiers in sports to share his Premier League experience.

But he also questioned the lack of availability of alcohol in Qatar, which won the bid for the 2022 World Cup after arguing it was time for soccer to move beyond traditional markets.

Alcohol is only sold in some five-star hotels in Qatar, and Richards noted that the English and Germans "like to go for a pint and that pint is a pint of beer."

"It is our culture as much as your culture is not drinking," he said, warning Qatar not to "bury your head in the sand" on the issue because it could turn fans off from attending the World Cup.

He also questioned how fans would cope during the summer heat, which can far exceed 104 degrees in July once they leave the air-conditioned stadiums.

"You have to consider the fans and how you disperse them and how you look after them because it is in June," Richards said. "I've been here then. It is a wonderful place to be but you can't lay on the beach for 10 minutes because you will scorch."

Richards, who was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2006 in recognition of his services to soccer, has long been a divisive figure in the game.

He assumed the chairmanship of the world's richest domestic league in 1999 after a decade at Sheffield Wednesday, but was accused of bullying tactics in his role as an FA board member by its former chairman David Triesman.

Richards also rocked England's ultimately unsuccessful bid for the 2018 World Cup when he suddenly quit the board a year before the vote.

Brazil: What Happens If There's Another Oil Crisis?

The rise in oil prices caused by the impasse between Western powers and Iran due to the latter's nuclear programme has been a cause for concern not just for the European and North American markets, but also for economies that are currently less vulnerable, such as the Brazilian economy, for which the two oil crises of the 1970s had catastrophic consequences.

Photo by F?bio Pinheiro on Flickr (CC BY-NC-ND 2.0)

Photo by F?bio Pinheiro on Flickr (CC BY-NC-ND 2.0)

Four decades of oil flow

The first oil crisis, in 1973 ? a result of US support for the Israelis in the Yom Kippur War ? and the second crisis, in 1979 ? a consequence of the Iranian Revolution ? bring back bad memories for the countries that import the commodity. In Brazil, the consequences of those crises were an inflationary spiral and an increase in foreign debt to stratospheric levels.

Similar stories have recently been dominating the news and discussions in the blogosphere. For example, during the last week of February the price per barrel rose beyond US $120 with the announcement from the Israeli authorities that an attack on the Iranian nuclear complex was imminent, in addition to the embargo on Iranian trade imposed by the EU, to commence on the 1st July. In response, Iran made its move by freezing the sale of oil to France and the United Kingdom, promising to extend its retaliation to other European countries.

Another more radical development is Iran's threat of closing the Strait of Hormuz, through which almost half of all oil used throughout the world passes. There are therefore real reasons to fear another crisis, especially considering the current events in the context of what already happened in the region decades earlier. Iran, as the world's fifth largest producer of oil, showed in 1979 that it has enough power to affect even the healthiest of economies if it freezes ? or even slows ? its oil exports.

The dependency that modern societies have on the energy matrix goes far beyond use in motor vehicles. To have some idea, just read a few of the examples [pt] mentioned by Massimo De Maria in his ?Informa??o Incorrecta? (?Incorrect Information?) blog.

O petr?leo.

A polyester shirt, toothpaste, fertiliser, a tin of paint, a pen, mascara, fabric conditioner, hand moisturiser, a cola bottle, a pair of shoes, kitchen appliances, a computer, a child's toy, food sweetener, insulin, a freezer, an antibiotic: what do all these things have in common? Oil.

It is therefore clear that another oil crisis would immediately affect not only the economies of importer nations, but also those countries, such as Brazil, that export to the affected countries. First of all, it would result in sharp inflation, followed by a recession. It is, in reality, a vicious circle, as even if a product is not made of oil, it will certainly be transported to its consumer via forms of transport that use petrol, kerosene or diesel.

Solutions for Brazil

For central banks such as Brazil's, there remains the difficult choice of combating inflation with a squeeze on monetary policy or through stimulating economic activity. On this subject, the ?Sensor Econ?mico Brasil? (?Brazilian Economic Sensor?) Blog, by Economics professor Jos? ?lvaro de Lima Cardoso, published an article [pt] on the effect of fossil fuels on inflationary pressure in Brazil.

In a year of food price shocks ? primarily in the first half of the year ? an increase in services as a result of high income, and greater use of fossil fuels and transportation, the inflation level could not take the pressure and the IPCA [National Index of Prices for the General Consumer] ended 2011 at the upper limit of the government's target, at 6.5% ? more than the 2010 level of 5.91% ? the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) announced on Friday. This is the highest level since 2004, which the figure was 7.6%.

The Brazilian national oil company ? Petrobr?s ? has been publicising the positive aspects of its most recent achievements ? that is, the exploration of the pre-salt layer (an undersea strip that stretches between the Brazilian states of Esp?rito Santo and Santa Catarina,?which looks promising for oil drilling). However, oil extraction is still in the very early stages, and so Brazil is forced to import oil from the Middle East due to the increase in domestic consumption and the fact that although the country already produces crude oil, it is not self-sufficient in the end-products. Furthermore, the hurry to no longer depend on imported oil products contributed to the leak at the Chevron rig last year, as Global Voices reported in December 2011.

Consequently, in order to maintain current price levels in foreign markets, Petrobr?s will no longer be able to subsidise prices for Brazilians, and a rise in the price of fossil fuels will be inevitable. On the other hand, the current events ?bring the possibility of the commencement of a new and special industrialization cycle that promises to be the most important in our economic history? claims [pt] Petrobr?s Distribution engineer and ex-Managing Director, Rodolfo Landim.

Since the rise in consumption is inversely proportional to the available reserves and, consequently, wars and disputes tend to spread as a result of the exhaustion of those reserves, Brazil is protecting itself from international price fluctuations by starting up new refineries and moving forward with biofuels, in which Brazil is the world leader with the project having been strengthened precisely because of the 1973 crisis. Robson Cadoch Valdez, a PhD student of International Strategy Studies said [pt] in his Cen?rio Externo (Outside Scenario) blog that:

Talvez, para o Brasil, esta seja uma oportunidade para promover o etanol brasileiro. Da mesma forma que na d?cada de setenta o pa?s desenvolveu seu programa alternativo de combust?vel em um per?odo de crise do petr?leo, agora pode ser a oportunidade de intensificar a promo??o do nosso etanol como alternativa brasileira a um prov?vel aumento no pre?o do petr?leo no mercado mundial.

Perhaps, for Brazil, this is an opportunity to promote Brazilian ethanol. In the same way that the country developed its alternative fuel programme during a time of oil crisis in the seventies, now could be the time to intensify promotion of our ethanol as a Brazilian alternative to a likely rise in oil prices in the global market.

In a world where ?oil crises? will get more and more frequent, possessing reserves such as the pre-salt layer and alternative energy sources such as biofuels involves taking on greater responsibilities, such as preserving this heritage and the sustainable exploration of areas where sugar cane culture has been threatening the survival of indigenous communities and small farmers (as was seen in an article published by Global?Voices on 20th July 2011).?It would be bad business to exchange peace for war, as is the case in Iran today.

Dog People vs. Cat People: What Pet Preference Says About You ...

PHOTO: Dog vs. cat

Ask anyone on the street whether they?re a cat or a dog person, and chances are, they?ve got a quick answer. Like the choice between Coke or Pepsi, or chocolate or vanilla, how you respond to cats versus dogs could say a lot about you.

?Dog people are a little more outgoing,? a dog owner at the Westminster Dog Show told ABC News. ?Cat people are a little more aloof, because that?s just how cats are.?

Karen Hessel, the proud ?mama? to 3-year-old Ripley, a golden retriever, said, ?They say that cats are very intelligent but I haven?t seen that yet in a cat, but I know my dog is brilliant.?

Over at the Black Diamond Cat Show in Kimberton, Pa., cat owners were telling a different story, saying intelligence is the key difference between dog and cat owners. Cat people, they say, are simply smarter.

?Cats are more independent and so are their owners,? Martha Auspitz said.

She has been showing cats for nearly 40 years and even met her husband, Norman, at a cat show.

?I was into Abyssinians,? he said, ?and when I saw Martha?s Abyssinians, I knew I needed them and when I saw Martha, I said, ?Oh.? So, in 1982 we were married.?

According to the American Pet Products Association, 62 percent of U.S. households have a pet. Dogs win in the popularity race, with 39 percent of U.S. households owning at least one dog, compared with 33 percent of U.S. households owning at least one cat.

The nature of why people prefer cats or dogs is a topic that has been getting increased research in recent years. Scientists at major academic institutions have devoted time and resources to understanding why people become one or the other.

On a practical level, research shows that we tend to gravitate toward the animal with which we were raised. Another big factor is living space and age. Apartment dwellers in urban areas are more likely to have cats or small dogs, while families living in the suburbs are more apt to have larger dogs like retrievers or bull mastiffs.

Parents with young children generally have energetic dogs the kids can play with outside, while single people or older people are more inclined to have the more low-key cat.

Whether you?re a cat or dog person is often an accident of geography.

?If you were born in Saudi Arabia, you?re more likely to be a cat person,? said Harold Herzog, an anthrozoologist studying human-animal relationships at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, N.C. ?Dogs there are very rarely pets because they?re considered vermin.?

Going deeper than geography or our upbringing, though, scientists believe the selection of species can say a lot about people. A major study at the University of Texas shows that there really is a difference between ?dog people? and ?cat people.?

Those who define themselves as ?dog people? are more extroverted, more agreeable and more conscientious than self-described ?cat people.? Those who love felines, though, were found to be less traditional, more creative and more neurotic.

Stephen Zawistowski, a science adviser with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said research tends to fall in line with the stereotypes people have already established for themselves.

?We think of dog people as being the guy at the beach, with his Labrador [retriever], and throwing the Frisbee and talking to everybody; and the cat lady who sits in her apartment alone with her cats,? he said.

Back at the Westminster dog show, men who like cats were getting special distinction by the dog-owners.

A Natural Method to Relieve Eyestrain - Health And Fitness Tips

The very worst thing we will be able to do to our eyes is strain them. Too much psychological strain and focus can actually harm our eyesight and cause the eyes permanent damage. Bad habits start from infancy, particularly once school starts. These unacceptable habits carry over into adultness and cause damages to the eyes. Most eye issues and illnesses are just due to the nasty habits learned in our youth. Kids have a natural curiosity to learn new things. Ask any nursery school child or first grader if they are excited for school and they'll almost always say yes with real keenness. Ask the same question of a junior high or highschool student and they will moan at the very idea of going back to college for another year.

Why the large difference between the 2? College is too disciplined and youngsters are forced to spend hours every day learning and memorising things that do not interest them. Any subject that's hardly interesting causes more concentration and the eyes to strain harder. Not every person enjoys the same subjects, yet all kids are forced to memorize and learn things in a not interesting way.

The eyes strain when forced to focus on photographs that don't interest us. Like numbers on an analytic report for work isn?t going to interest all the staff, arithmetic, science, and English won't interest each student. This doesn?t suggest that having a well-rounded education should be thrown out through the window. It essentially means there must be a change in how children are educated.

The Bates Method was discovered by Doctor. William Bates, a famous eye doctor. In his strategy, Dr. Bates put together a big, poster-sized card covered in common shapes and letters familiar to most college age kids. The card was hung at the front on the classroom and offered the students something to take a look at when they were feeling exhausted or overwhelmed. The purpose of the card was to give the youngsters an opportunity to relax their eyes with exercises to improve vision. Taking a look at new material puts strain on the eyes, but familiar objects allow the eyes to rest.

Teaching kids not to strain their eyes from a tender age will help keep their vision sharp for a lot of years to come.

If you want to learn how to improve your eyesight then try out the Bates Method Eye Exercises.

Why You'll need a Business Company | Albermisaan.com

Why You?ll need a Business Being

When commencing or expanding a business, many lovers wonder assuming they should form a business entity in addition to, if which means, which one jointly use. There are a multitude of information in addition to ?pitches? being made via the internet regarding the use of certain agencies versus many others. When most people cut over the flak, then again, the primary reason for forming a business entity is to create cover from personal liability arising from your company activities.

It can be well organized that up to eighty pct of organizations will fail for their first eighteen months. Many worth mentioning businesses, in addition to probably yours, carry an increased level involving personal risk because of their owners. If you are not with the correct entity for a particular company, you are going to be personally liable if the business fails. Do you must expose the home, car and other assets? Mid-section the assets owned because of your spouse and their paycheck from your regular position? Selecting the proper entity for a business stops such nightmares with occurring. More importantly, you can sleep during the night time knowing of the fact that worst thing that will happen is losing ones own investment in the flooring buisingess, not the home. There are a lot of business shape options which exist in the trendy corporate earth. Following is mostly a short explanation extremely common company structures.

Organizations

Corporations come in two simple forms, some sort of ?C? business and a particular ?S? business. There are a variety of differences, nonetheless central the first is a overtax issue. In brief put, ?C? corps are taxed on the revenues and you simply are in that case taxed separately on any money you take right out of the corporation. An ?S? business -passes through- most taxes to your shareholders with the information being reported on your personal taxation assessments.

Regardless of the tax classification, a corporation is believed an separate entity from your legal viewpoint. This separate status acts to be a shield relating to the activities of the business plus your personal assets. As some sort of practical example, Kmart just lately filed personal bankruptcy. The particular person shareholders are not required to help you file personal bankruptcy and lost treats like their investment with the stock of the company. Forming and getting a corporation for a business activities will have the same effect, to help you wit, your personal assets is definately not wiped out if the business fails.

Limited Legal responsibility Company

A small liability company, or ?LLC? as marketing promotions campaigns known, was an awfully popular thing choice with the early 1990s. LLCs resemble corporations, but may be taxed to be a partnership. Within California, the LLC is capable of having either one owner and two. Rapidly number, these kind of owners take the legal title involving ?member. ? The LLC offers a shield for a personal assets to be a corporation.

Relationships

In my opinion, it is better to have died a minute child then take a enterprise. Unfortunately, many business owners form partnerships and do not even know it. This occurs right after they go inside business with someone else. If virtually no business thing is organized, the legislation considers this company being a partnership in addition to treats that accordingly.

Partnerships are generally dangerous for just one primary purpose: a partnership doesn?t provide almost any protection with liability in addition to, in a lot of ways, attracts personal liability. Under well-established legislation, most partnerships are classified as ?general?. This simply means that all your partners are resulting in the current administration and running of the partnership company. This classification is capable of having grisly outcomes.

In a partnership, each lover is jointly answerable for the loans of some other partner arising from the company. For example, you plus your partner visit a business dinner with a client. Your partner has a drink and then some more. They then enter into an accident in the process home. Each one of the partners is likely for your damages claimed through the injured persons. That means YOU! Even if you were not with the car, did not rent the vehicle, never saw the vehicle and tend not to drink!

Partnerships is a recipe meant for disaster. Keep away from them whenever possible.

Limited Relationships

Limited Relationships ["LP"] are maybe the most misinterpreted business thing. A restricted partnership is identical to a standard partnership, but allows several of the partners to help you limit their own liability also limited lovers. It is important to remember that these restricted partners are available to simply creating a capital [cash, information, equipment] contribution to your partnership. They won?t be included in actively running this company. If they?ve been, they get rid of excess any cover from enterprise debts. Many limited partnerships end disastrously. If you are married to is a superb pursuing a tiny partnership, you should do so in combination with corporations. That one strategy is well beyond the scope from this article, but feel liberated to contact me if you?d like to pursue a tiny partnership.

Business owners should safeguard themselves simply by forming entities because of their business activities. The substantial issue is identifying your structure that is best for a particular situation.

Strong retail sales are sign of improving economy - Business - Wire ...

NEW YORK -- Americans stepped up their spending in February, boosting sales at many stores and offering the latest sign that shoppers are feeling more confident in the economy.

As merchants reported their monthly sales figures Thursday, a diverse group including Target and Macy's reported sales gains that exceeded Wall Street estimates. Even Gap Inc., long mired in a sales slump, posted an unexpected increase.

The figures, based on revenue at stores opened at least a year, are considered an indicator of a retailer's health. Only a small group of retailers report monthly sales figures. But industry watchers say those merchants that do post monthly numbers offer a snapshot of consumer spending, which accounts for more than 70 percent of all economic activity.

FILE - In this May 10, 2011 file photo, people carrying Macy's shopping bags walk past the Macy's flagship store, in New York. Macy?s Inc., which runs Bloomingdale?s and its namesake stores, said Thursday that February revenue at stores open at least a year climbed 4.6 percent to top analysts? estimates.

"This was a very strong month. A new life has been breathed into the retailers," said Ken Perkins, president of Retail Metrics, a research firm. "Consumers are starting to feel much better about their overall situation."

Overall, merchants on Thursday reported a 6.7 percent increase for February compared with the year-ago period, according to the International Council of Shopping Center's tally of 21 retailers. That followed a more modest increase of 2.7 percent in January. February's results marked the biggest gain since June 2011 when the index was up 6.9 percent as shoppers took advantage of deep promotions on summer merchandise.

An unusually mild winter, which depressed sales of cold weather items like coats during the holiday season, turned out to be a blessing in February. It helped to kick off spending of spring merchandise last month. But what had a bigger impact is the improving economy, which boosted shoppers' moods during the month to the highest level in a year, according to a widely-watched barometer of consumer confidence released Tuesday by private research group the Conference Board.

Americans particularly are encouraged by the improving job market. The government reported that the unemployment rate fell to 8.3 percent, the lowest in three years and the first time since 1994 that unemployment has dropped five months in a row.

Figures released Thursday showed more signs of improvement: The government reported the number of people seeking unemployment benefits fell slightly last week to the lowest point in four years. Economists expect employers to add another 210,000 jobs when job figures for February are out next Friday, according to FactSet. The unemployment rate should remain unchanged.

The government also reported Thursday that consumers earned a little more in January and spent most of the extra money. The gains should keep the economy growing at a modest pace.

Meanwhile, Wall Street hit two milestones. The Nasdaq composite index briefly touched 3,000 on Wednesday for the first time since the collapse in dot-com stocks more than a decade ago. Stocks ended lower, but it was still the best February on Wall Street in 14 years. That came a day after the Dow Jones industrial average closed above 13,000 for the first time since May 2008.

But there are reasons for some caution. February is the second lowest sales volume generator behind January. So even small increases in spending can exaggerate growth. Adding to that, early spending of spring merchandise in February could hurt retailers' business going in March.

The European debt crisis is also a lingering issue that could affect the U.S. economy. And rising gas prices could threaten consumer spending particularly among the low-to middle income shopper. The price of gas has jumped 45 cents since Jan. 1 and is the highest on record for this time of year, an average of $3.73 a gallon.

Still, Sherif Mityas, a partner in the retail practice at A.T. Kearney, a management consulting firm, says: "There have been a lot of tailwinds helping retailers."

Target Corp.'s sales rebounded after a muted holiday shopping season. Its key sales figure rose 7 percent in February as more people came to stores and spent more on core categories such as food and health care products. Analysts expected a 5.2 percent rise.

Excluding the Easter months, which skew results, Target's increase was the biggest since November 2007 when the figure soared 10.8 percent. That was one month before the recession officially started.

Target, however, said it continues to plan for an increase of around 4 percent for the fiscal first quarter. That suggests that executives believe there's the possibility business could be pulled forward.

Department-store chain Macy's Inc., which has had solid results since the recession thanks to its focus on tailoring merchandise to different regions, also reported a sales gain that beat Wall Street estimates. It posted a 4.6 percent increase, better than 3.5 percent increase Wall Street expected.

"We saw good consumer response to our early spring deliveries in women's apparel, and continued strong trends in accessories, shoes, cosmetics, men's and home, which bodes well for the months ahead," said Terry J. Lundgren, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Macy's in a statement.

Even Gap Inc., which has suffered throughout the recession, said revenue at stores opened at least a year rose 4 percent in February. Analysts had expected a 1.4 percent drop. The figure was helped by strong demand for spring clothing at its Banana Republic chain, but the North America's divisions of its namesake chain and Old Navy also enjoyed gain. Its international business had a decline.

Tempting Fate in the Philippines

Henry narrates the ritual for us with a series of shamanistic platitudes: The spirits have accepted our offering, they will guide us and protect us as we climb the mountain, etc. I find it difficult to pay attention. The slow-motion slaughter leaves my eyes wet and my stomach churning. I wasn?t nearly as affected by the cockfights in Manila, which had a cruel, sporting logic that I could at least begin to understand. But this ceremony, done solely for the benefit of some imaginary beings, makes no sense to me. After a while I turn away, and fixate on a poster tacked up above the bloody table. It shows an assortment of dogs and cats in a grassy field decorated with flowers and jewelry. There's a trio of kittens tucked into a tiny bed, and what looks like a Golden Retriever in a shirt and tie, holding a long-stemmed rose between its teeth. At the bottom of the image it says, "PUPPIES & FRIENDS."

World News - Religious, political hard-liners face off in Iran election

Painful memories of the last election have led to voter indifference in Iran. To some Iranians, the elections will make little difference to their expectations. NBC News' Ali Arouzi reports from Tehran.

By NBC News, msnbc.com staff and news services.

Updated at 8:21 a.m. ET: TEHRAN -- Iranians voted on Friday in a parliamentary election which is expected to reinforce the power of the clerical establishment of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei over hard-line political rivals led by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The election is unlikely to have much impact on Iran's foreign policies - the country's disputed nuclear program and international relations are already strictly controlled by Khamenei.

But it could allow the clergy to strengthen its hand in determining the political backdrop ahead of a presidential election due in 2013.

'Negative propaganda'
With Iran facing growing international isolation, Western sanctions over its nuclear program and a threat of attack by Israel, Iranian leaders have been calling for a high turnout to bolster their legitimacy.

NYT: Iran warns unmotivated voters of Western plots as election looms

"There is a lot of negative propaganda against our nation ... The arrogant powers are bullying us to maintain their prestige. A high turnout will be better for our nation ... and for preserving security," said Khamenei after casting his vote.

Ayatollah Khamenei's Website / EPA

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei casts his vote in Tehran, Iran, on Friday.

"Whenever there has been more enmity towards Iran, the importance of the elections has been greater."

The election will be the first since the country's disputed presidential election in 2009, when opposition and pro-democracy protests were quelled by security forces.

NBC News' Ali Arouzi reported that there has been no signs of "election fever" in Iran, with advertisements dominating billboards over campaign posters.

Obama seeks harmony with Israel over Iran attack plan

This time round, leading reformist groups have said they will stay away from voting, setting the stage for a straight contest between backers of Khamenei and Ahmadinejad.

A low turnout, however, could nonetheless highlight the extent to which disappointment still exists among Iranian voters over the outcome of the 2009 presidential election.

At schools, in shops, and on the streets of big cities and small towns, daily life plays out in Iran.

While voting stations in affluent northern Tehran were quiet, people?lined up?in central and downtown parts of the city to cast their votes.

"I am here to support my establishment against the enemies' plot by voting," said Mahboubeh Esmaili, 28, holding her baby outside the Hoseiniyeh Ershad polling center in central Tehran, where around 50 people were queuing up to vote.

"Votes in this election are a needle in the eyes of the enemy," another voter told NBC News.

PhotoBlog: Voters cast ballots across Iran

The two main groups that are competing for the 290-seat parliament are the United Front of Principlists, which includes Khamenei loyalists, and the Resistance Front that backs Ahmadinejad.

Cash handouts
Ahmadinejad, the son of a blacksmith, still enjoys the support of many in Iran's poorer communities, largely thanks to his humble image and regular cash handouts. But his popularity has been dented by the country's economic crisis.

Western sanctions aimed at forcing Iran to halt sensitive nuclear work have started to hurt energy and food imports. The West fears Iran is working on developing a nuclear bomb, but Tehran says the program is for electricity generation and other peaceful purposes.

Tehran increased production of higher-grade enriched uranium, heightening concerns that Iran may be developing a bomb. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

The price of staple goods has spiraled because of the falling value of the Iranian currency and fresh European Union and U.S. sanctions on Iran's financial and oil sectors.

Critics have accused Ahmadinejad of making things worse for ordinary Iranians, saying his decision to replace food and fuel subsidies with direct monthly payments since 2010 has fuelled inflation, officially running at around 21 percent.

Political rift
Khamenei will be looking to use the vote to reestablish his hold on power following a political rift between the two leaders when Ahmadinejad tried to supersede Khamenei in Iran's complex political hierarchy.

As tensions with Iran increase over their nuclear programs and Israel considers a strike on Iran, Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., joins Morning Joe to discuss why diplomacy with Iran is the best policy.

Analysts have said Ahmadinejad and his allies have been trying to undermine the central role of the clergy in politics by emphasizing nationalist themes of Iranian history and culture in their speeches.

While Ahmadinejad himself cannot stand for a third term under Iran's constitution, some Iranian media reports said he backed Esfandiar Rahim-Mashaie, his chief of staff, as a candidate to succeed him in the 2013 presidential vote.

Fears grow of Israel-Iran missile shootout

The Supreme Leader's campaign got a boost when powerful establishment groups - including influential clerics, the elite Revolutionary Guards and powerful bazaar merchants - formed an alliance to back his loyalists.

The Guardian Council, made up of six clerics and six jurists who vet candidates, has approved 3,467 individuals out of more than 5,382 who initially applied to run in the poll.

Some politicians said that the hard-line council barred many established Ahmadinejad supporters, forcing him to pick younger political unknowns.

Khamenei, who initially endorsed Ahmadinejad's 2009 re-election, publicly distanced himself from the president in April by reinstating the sacked intelligence minister.

'Deviant current'
In the past months, dozens of Ahmadinejad allies have been detained or dismissed from their posts for being linked to a "deviant current" that his rivals say aims to sideline clerics. Ahmadinejad's media adviser has been sentenced to one year in jail for insulting Khamenei.

They're sleek, majestic and defensive. Thousands of women in Iran are taking serious steps to be lethal yet feminine.?

Reformists did not send in a list of candidates, saying the basic needs of a "free and fair" vote had not been fulfilled.

Poll: Israeli voters don't want attack on Iran without US help

Major pro-reform political parties have been banned and leading reformists have either been jailed or banned from political activities since the 2009 election, which the opposition says was rigged.

Opposition leaders Mirhossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karoubi, defeated in the 2009 vote, have been under house arrest for more than a year.

NBC News' Ali Arouzi, Reuters and msnbc.com staff contributed to this report.

The Science and Art of Neandertal Teeth [Slide Show]

Features | Evolution

The fossilized teeth of the Neandertals are scientifically informative--and pleasing to the eye

Image: ? Luka Mjeda

Of all the human ancestors represented in the fossil record, Neandertals are the best known. A significant proportion of what scientists have learned about the Neandertals is based on a set of remains that the Croatian paleontologist Dragutin Gorjanovi-Kramberger recovered between 1899 and 1905 from a rock shelter in the town of Krapina, some 60 kilometers north of Zagreb. The Krapina sample dates to between 120,000 and 130,000 years ago, during the Pleistocene epoch, and includes multiple representatives of nearly every bone and tooth of the body.

Early on, Gorjanovi-Kramberger took an interest in the teeth from Krapina, noting anomalies such as taurodontism, in which the pulp chamber expands into the roots. First described from the Krapina remains, taurodontism turns out to be common in Neandertals, although not exclusive to them. Since Gorjanovi?s time, studies of the more than 275 Neandertal teeth from Krapina have yielded key insights into Neandertal life history. For example, analysis of enamel growth lines has shown that Neandertal wisdom teeth erupted earlier than those of modern humans, coming in at age 15 instead of 18 or older. Other studies of tooth enamel document irregularities related to periods of metabolic stress from starvation and disease. That the Neandertals lived through the stress attests to a keen ability to cope with severe hardships. Aspects of the Krapina teeth, such as the shovel shape of the incisors, and surface features of the canines, bicuspids and molars, link the Neandertals to modern humans and Homo heidelbergensis, their ancestor in Europe. The overall size of the teeth of the adults Neandertals at Krapina, meanwhile, reveals differences between males and females similar to those seen in modern Homo sapiens men and women.

? View a slide show of Neandertal teeth

Analyses of the Krapina teeth have also illuminated behavioral practices of the Neandertals. Grooves on the necks of some bicuspids and molars show that they used toothpicks to dislodge food stuck between these teeth. Studies of the wear patterns reveal that Neandertals wore down their front teeth more than their cheek teeth?indicating they used their incisors and canines as a third hand to grip and manipulate objects. Scratches left on the lip face of the same teeth provide further evidence for dental manipulations. Many of the incisors and canines from Krapina show numerous scratches on the front (lip-facing) surface?the result of tools raking across the teeth during life. The obliquity of these scratches, running from the upper left to lower right of the tooth, hints that Neandertals were predominantly right-handed.

Gorjanovi was the first to look at Neandertal teeth in new ways by publishing a series of radiographic images in 1902, just seven years after Wilhelm R?ntgen?s discovery of x-rays. Recently, Zagreb-based artist Luka Mjeda photographed all the original teeth for a permanent record as part of an open-source platform for information about Pleistocene humans called the NESPOS project (www.nespos.org). Jakov Radov i of the Croatian Natural History Museum in Zagreb led the Krapina part of the project. Mjeda later manipulated the photographs to create remarkable, artistic renderings of the tooth surfaces. Although Gorjanovi probably never considered the aesthetics of the Krapina teeth, we think he would have appreciated this new view of them through the eyes of an artist. Mjeda and I recently mounted an exhibition of the images in Lawrence, Kansas. They are available for purchase from TeethasArt@gmail.com
