Walk Like a Penguin to Avoid Slipping on Ice

Walk Like a Penguin to Avoid Slipping on IceIf you shift your center-of-gravity over your front facing foot instead of splitting it evenly between your feet, you can more easily walk across icy surfaces without falling quite so much. Penguins have figured this out, as have many who live in areas covered by ice for weeks each year.

The above graphic is from Tablet Infographics, a site that has a wide variety of infographics for many occasions. Another way to avoid slipping in icy conditions is to use a commercial product such as YakTrax that attach to your shoes. Either way, take care when having to walk icy paths.

Turkey: Syrian regime's actions equal war crimes

DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) ? The Syrian regime's bombardment of its citizens should be declared a war crime and aid groups must be given greater access to the millions who are suffering there, Turkey's foreign minister said Wednesday at the World Economic Forum.

Syria has seen a new rise in violence in recent weeks, including a government rocket attack Wednesday, in the two-year-old conflict the U.N. says has killed more than 60,000 people. The civil war was a major topic of discussion Wednesday at the gathering of corporate and political leaders in the Swiss resort of Davos.

"There should be a clear signal to the Syrian regime that what they have been doing, bombarding cities by airplanes, is a war crime," Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said in Davos, adding that he expected the U.N. Security Council to step in "to stop this bloodshed."

"People are dying in Syria ... How long will we wait? ... The silence of the international community is killing people," he added.

U.N. humanitarian chief Valerie Ann Amos joined Davutoglu in projecting a sense of urgency.

"The humanitarian situation in Syria is already catastrophic and it's clearly getting worse," said Amos. "What we are seeing now are the consequences of the failure of the international community to unite to resolve the crisis."

The world has been grappling with how to deal with the Syrian war ever since protests against President Bashar Assad erupted in March 2011. But beyond calls and symbolic gestures such as last fall's recognition by many countries of the opposition as the legitimate government of Syria, there has been no intervention on the ground.

Russia has given Assad's embattling regime significant diplomatic cover ? which has of late has been eroding ? and there has been widespread reluctance in the West about arming the rebels due to concerns about the influential role of anti-Western jihadi elements in the rebellion.

In the meantime, Amos said, 4 million people "face unrelenting violence and violations of their human rights" ? living in constant fear of bombing and lacking food, shelter or medical attention.

"When I visited the region in December women told me harrowing stories of the violence they had witnessed, including rape and torture," Amos added.

In all, she said, at least 650,000 people have fled Syria and another 2 million people are internally displaced. She said UN relief agencies, working with Syrian aid agencies, were feeding more people every month but added "we cannot keep pace with the rising number of people in acute need."

Ertharin Cousin, the executive director of the U.N.'s World Food Program, said the organization hoped to expand beyond the 150,000 people it was aiding in Syria but needed more resources and better access.

Davutoglu said at the very least the world community should set up humanitarian access to cities inside Syria like Homs and Hama, which so far aid workers have found largely unreachable.

"Urban areas are being bombarded indiscriminately," he said. "Even in a war, this is a criminal act."

Davutoglu said one possibility was setting up a no-fly zone but another alternative would be "a clear decision by the U.N. Security Council declaring this a war crime and taking this to international justice."

He said Turkey was housing 160,000 Syrians in 16 refugee camps and up to 70,000 others in its cities, and had spent $500 million on housing, food, education and health services.

"We don't see them as refugees but we see them as our guests," he said. "We will never close our border."

Vali Nasr, dean of the school of advanced international studies at Johns Hopkins University, warned that even if Assad fell "more than likely the civil war will continue" in the absence of any international force to stop the violence.

He said Syria occupies a key place in international politics.

"It can have a major blowback effect in Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq and also touch off a much broader regional rivalry between Turkey and Iran (Assad's major backer) and Iran and Saudi Arabia," he said.

Modifications of a nanoparticle can change chemical interactions with cell membranes

Jan. 23, 2013 ? Researchers at Syracuse University's Department of Biomedical and Chemical Engineering at L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science are studying the toxicity of commonly used nanoparticles, particles up to one million times smaller than a millimeter that could potentially penetrate and damage cell membranes.

In a recent article published along with cover art in the journal Langmuir, researchers Shikha Nangia, assistant professor of biomedical and chemical engineering (BMCE), and Radhakrishna Sureshkumar, Department Chair of BMCE and professor of physics, showed how simple shape and charge modifications of a nanoparticle can cause tremendous changes in the chemical interactions between the nanoparticle and a cell membrane.

Nanomaterials, which are currently being used as drug carriers, also pose a legitimate concern, since no universal standards exist to educate and fully protect those who handle these materials. Nanoparticles are comparable to chemicals in their potential threat because they could easily penetrate the skin or be inhaled.

"Nanotechnology has immense potential that is starting to be being realized; a comprehensive understanding of toxicity of nanoparticles will help develop better safe handling procedures in nanomanufacturing and nano-biotechnology" says Sureshkumar and Nangia, In addition, the toxicity levels of various nanoparticles can be used to our advantage in targeting cancer cells and absorbing radiation during cancer therapy. Nanotoxicity is becoming a major concern as the use of nanoparticles in imaging, therapeutics, diagnostics, catalysis, sensing and energy harvesting continues to grow dramatically.

This research project has taken place over the past year utilizing a state of the art 448 core parallel computer nicknamed "Prophet" housed in Syracuse University's Green Data Center. The research was funded by the National Science Foundation.

Langmuir is a notable, interdisciplinary journal of American Chemical Society publishing articles in: colloids, interfaces, biological interfaces, nano-materials, electrochemistry and devices and applications.

iHeartRadio (for iPad)

The iPad streaming music space?is as competitive as the desktop streaming music space. Nearly every major player has a dedicated iPad??streaming music app that delivers quality audio, so how does a company separate its service from the pack? Clear Channel's free iHeartRadio iPad app combines Slacker Radio's station customization with Sirius XM Internet Radio's live audio feed. In short, iHeartRadio's iPad app tries to be a music site that appeals to all listeners and, for the most part, it succeeds.

It's Radio
You can opt to log in by creating an account or using your Facebook credentials. The iHeartRadio app has a far less busy design than the desktop version. It consists of top-level station rows?Top Stations Near Me, Top 40 & Pop, News & Talk, Sports, and Personalities?and several individual stations. The My Music icon that resides near the top of the screen displays the last handful of stations that you've tuned into. Live radio stations, unfortunately, don't display artist names, or give you the option to view artist biographies, or lyrics. You also can't make music purchases.

Still, if you love live radio, you'll dig what iHeartRadio offers. There are over 1,500 station to explore. Unlike Sirius XM Internet Radio, iHeartRadio lacks the ability to pause or rewind live radio. A scan button causes the service to search for other related stations.

It's Curated Music
Clicking the "Create Station" icon lets music fans either key an artist's name into the search box or select one of the featured artists to create a commercial-free station. There are over 400,000 artists, and 15 millions songs in the iHeartRadio catalog. Curated stations, unlike the live radio offerings, display lyrics, beautiful artist photos and bios, and let you purchase songs from either Amazon MP3 or iTunes. You can't, however, create playlists or use the "Perfect For" feature found in the desktop version that lets you create stations based on mood.

Like Slacker, you can upvote songs to have them play more frequently, or downvote them so that you won't hear them. The Discovery Tuner, located near the bottom of the screen, lets you adjust the related artists (from "Familiar" to "Less familiar.") I like that this is easily accessible?Slacker demands that you deep-dive into its options menu to do the same.

This Isn't Radio
iHeartRadio for iPad has something that its desktop version?doesn't: a Photos and Video section. The photo section is an odd collection of celebrity photos?some of which have nothing to do with music (like the Celebrity Twins group). The video section, thankfully, stays on topic. It contains musicians' iHeartRadio concert performances (Gym Class Heroes, Maroon 5).

I enjoyed smooth, hiccup-free audio when I streamed music over my home and office wireless signals. iHeartRadio also features AirPlay wireless streaming support.

Will You Heart iHeartRadio?
If you like both live radio and curated stations, yes. iHeartRadio for iPad manages to capture the radio's spontaneity (complete with ads and annoying DJs), while giving users options to create commercial-free custom stations. Still, those who prefer to hear strictly live radio or just custom stations will find many other dedicated options on the Web.

A?call for equality

Published 11:56am Tuesday, January 22, 2013

?

Human Rights Commission?honors MLK?Day

Jennifer Harves makes sure to include a lot of students in her classroom every day.

The early childhood special education teacher epitomizes equality, according to Community Education Director Amy Baskin. That?s why Harves was awarded the Austin Human Rights Commission?s 2012 Human Rights Award Monday night during the HRC?s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration.

?I think Martin Luther King was not about just race, he was about equality,? Baskin, who nominated Harves for the award, said. ?I just thought about all the things [Harves] does to really make people aware of the abilities of people with disabilities.?

Harves is active in the community, working with people who have Autism Spectrum Disorder since 1999. She serves on the Austin Public Schools ASD team, and her classroom is a pilot site for the National Professional Development Center

?

on Autism Spectrum Disorders. In addition, she?s volunteered at the Circle of Friends Day Camp since it started, and has worked on various ways to inform the community about residents with autism.

Harves told the audience she gains just as much as she gives when working with residents.

?Children with ASDs have taught me so much,? Harves said.

Jennifer Harves speaks on the importance of including residents with Autism Spectrum Disorders in the community at the Austin Human Rights Commission's Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Monday night. Harves is the 2012 Human Rights Award winner.

?

Giving back

Harves wasn?t the only one to extol volunteerism at the event, however.

Representatives from the Community Learning Center, St. John?s Lutheran Church, and Sumner Elementary School were on hand to discuss volunteer opportunities and how the CLC and local initiatives like the Backpack Program make a difference in the community.

?We?re increasing what we?re giving out, and the need is definitely there,? said Sharry Watkins, volunteer at St. John?s Lutheran.

Watkins and other volunteers started to give food and supplies to Sumner Elementary students several years ago, in a backpack to take home during the weekends. Watkins and Wendy Kusick, a Sumner teacher, told the audience the amount of students participating in the program has more than tripled since it started three years ago. In addition to Sumner, various churches and groups have banded together to bring the program to Neveln and Banfield Elementary Schools, as well as the Early Childhood and Family Education program.

At the CLC, residents go through Adult Basic Education courses in order to gain valuable skills to use in the community, whether it be remedial academic courses or parenting classes, according to Baskin and Janice Mino, ABE coordinator.

There are many opportunities to volunteer in Austin, according to HRC officials. Baskin and Mino highlighted a need for tutors and classroom assistants at the CLC, in addition to various scholarship funds for residents in need.

Asteroid mining: Second company announces plans. Time to stake a claim? (+video)

Deep Space Industries said Tuesday it plans to launch small prospector missions to asteroids beginning in 2015. The goal of asteroid mining is to make space exploration more affordable.

Asteroids aren't just for dodging anymore. Less than a year after a company called Planetary Resources announced plans to survey, then mine, asteroids, a second company has set out its plans to turn orbiting piles of cosmic rubble into rocket fuel, solar panels, and trusses for spacecraft hundreds to thousands of miles above Earth.

Suddenly asteroid mining has the potential of becoming a competitive field.

The ultimate goal is to make space exploration and development more affordable by obtaining fuel and construction material from easy-to-reach sources that flit past Earth all the time, rather than the costlier method of hauling everything up from Earth.

As a start, representatives of Deep Space Industries (DSI) on Tuesday outlined the company's plans to launch small prospector missions to asteroids beginning in 2015. A year later, the firm plans to launch its first sample-return mission, which aims to bring back samples of an asteroid not by the cupful, but in 60- to 150-pound quantities.

Such amounts not only would present a bonanza for the research community. They also would provide pristine test material for mining, refining, and manufacturing techniques the company is developing for use in space.

To company chairman Rick Tumlinson, DSI's ultimate goals represent a logical next step beyond government-sponsored exploration programs. He drew an analogy between NASA's human-spaceflight program and the Lewis and Clark Expedition under Thomas Jefferson, which was followed by a westward flow of settlers.

"We are the settlers and shopkeepers" heading into this latest frontier, he added.

Over the past 32 years, astronomers have discovered about 9,000 near-Earth asteroids, largely with the goal of assessing the risk of a collision with Earth. But among those 9,000, about 1,700 require only about as much energy to reach as a trip to the moon ? an alluring prospect for cosmic prospectors interested in exploiting the asteroids' resource potential.

For all the various elements asteroids may provide ? from platinum to iron and silicon ? perhaps the most immediately valuable resource they carry is water ice, which can be used to make rocket fuel.

Therein lies the early money, according to officials with DSI and with Planetary Resources.

One early market, DSI officials say, could well be communications satellites. These run out of fuel long before their hardware fails. Although in principle these satellites could be refueled, sending that fuel from Earth is prohibitively expensive. So, before their tanks run dry, they must be sent to graveyard orbits where they won't collide with other satellites and become space junk. Fuel manufactured in space from water ice liberated from asteroids, however, could extend the operating life of a satellite.

Each month of additional service is worth another $5 million to $8 million to a communications-satellite operator, notes David Gump, DSI's chief executive officer.

Genomic sequencing identifies mutant 'drivers' of common brain tumor

Jan. 22, 2013 ? Large-scale genomic sequencing has revealed two DNA mutations that appear to drive about 15 percent of brain tumors known as meningiomas, a finding that could lead to the first effective drug treatments for the tumors, report scientists from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Broad Institute.

Surgery and radiation currently are the only treatments for meningiomas -- slow-growing, often benign tumors that develop in the membranes surrounding the brain. Meningiomas can grow dangerously large, however, causing seizures and limb weakness, and occasionally are fatal. In some instances, the tumors grow aggressively or their locations make surgery and radiation a challenge to carry out, and chemotherapy has proven ineffective as an alternative.

The researchers report in the journal Nature Genetics that they have identified two mutations, SMO and AKT1, in the genomes of 15 percent of a group of meningiomas removed during surgery. The findings are being published on the journal's web site in advance of appearing in a print edition.

"The wonderful thing about those mutations is that there are already drugs in the clinic to target cancers with those mutations," said Rameen Beroukhim, MD, PhD, a medical oncologist and cancer biologist at Dana-Farber and the Broad Institute.

"Clinically, there is no medical treatment for meningioma that is known to be effective," said Beroukhim, senior author of the paper along with William C. Hahn, MD, PhD, director of the Center for Cancer Genome Discovery at Dana-Farber, and Ian F. Dunn, MD, a neurosurgeon at Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center (DF/BWCC).

Beroukhim said that surgery can effectively treat many meningiomas, but the locations of some tumors make surgery a difficult or impossible option. For other patients, there are not curative treatments, so the discovery of the mutations in some meningiomas "is potentially the first path to an effective medical treatment," Beroukhim noted.

Meningiomas are diagnosed in about 18,000 patients annually in the United States. They account for about one-third of primary brain tumors (those that originate in the brain) and are twice as common in women. They are generally slow-growing, and many patients don't require treatment unless the tumor expands and presses on vital structures. But a significant number recur following treatment, and many become malignant.

Beroukhim said that little has been uncovered about the genetic makeup of meningiomas. In the current study, the scientists sequenced either the entire genome or just the protein-coding regions (exomes) in samples of 17 meningiomas. Genes that were found to be altered in those tumors were then sequenced in two additional groups of tumors.

Compared to most types of tumors, the researchers found, the meningiomas had fewer numbers of genetic changes or damage. In some of the tumors they found mutations in two genes that have roles in known cancer-causing signaling pathways. One, SMO, found in three tumors, is a member of the Hedgehog pathway. The second, AKT1, was discovered in five tumors and is a part of the PI3K-AKT-mTOR pathways that is implicated in breast, colorectal and lung cancers. A sixth tumor had a previously unknown mutation in the mTOR pathway.

Together, these mutant gene pathways appeared to be key drivers of 15 percent of the meningiomas studied. Experimental drugs that inhibit those abnormal pathways are in clinical trials and have shown promising activity, the researchers said, suggesting "that patients with these meningiomas may benefit from such targeted therapies already in development or use."

Co-first authors of the report are Priscilla Brastianos, MD, of Dana-Farber and Peleg Horowitz, MD, PhD, of Brigham and Women's Hospital. Other authors are at the Broad, Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women's, and Massachusetts General Hospital. The research was supported by the Brain Science Foundation, the Pediatric Low-Grade Astrocytoma Foundation, and other foundations, the National Institutes of Health (K08 CA122833, K08 NS064168 and K12 CA090354-11), and the U.S. Department of Defense (W81XWH-12-1-0136.)

Researchers have found that domestic dogs naturally seek a diet high in fat, and many dogs will willingly eat much more food than they need.

Keeping Fido fit

Left to their own devices, domestic dogs will consume a diet that is high in fat and will happily gobble excess calories, according to an international team of researchers.

At the Waltham Centre for Pet Nutrition in England, researchers collaborated with scientists in Australia and New Zealand to conduct a series of doggie dietary studies. They worked with adult dogs of five diverse breeds ? the papillon, miniature schnauzer, cocker spaniel, Labrador retriever and St. Bernard ? offering them foods with varying amounts of protein, fat and carbohydrate.

The result: When given the choice, dogs consistently chose a daily caloric intake comprised of about 63 percent fat, 30 percent protein and 7 percent carbohydrate. When offered excess food, some dogs lapped up more than double the calories they needed.

According Adrian Hewson-Hughes, lead author of the study, the dogs? behavior probably reflects that of their ancestors who lived in the wild.

?In the wild, dogs and wolves often have irregular access to food, and competition is fierce, leading them to try and maximize their calorie intake whenever possible,? Hewson-Hughes said in a news release. ?However, domestic dogs today have regular access to food and may lead relatively inactive lifestyles compared with their wild ancestors. By demonstrating that dogs will overeat when offered excess food, this research also reinforces the importance of responsible feeding measures, such as portion control, for helping ensure dogs maintain a healthy body weight.?

Fighting cat and doggie doldrums

A young entrepreneur has come up with a product to help pets suffering from seasonal affective disorder (SAD) ? a kind of depression that people sometimes experience, usually in the winter months. In November, Oregon-based Pawsitive Lighting began shipping orders for Sol Box, a light therapy box marketed as a device to help balance pets? mood and sleep regulating hormones.

Max Marvin, 21, came up with the idea after noticing that his golden retriever, Luke, was drawn to the light box his owner was prescribed to treat a bad case of insomnia.

?Luke and I were both basking in the sun every single morning, and I found that he was just completely drawn to the light,? Marvin told ABC News. ?Luke would just be on his back enjoying the light, happy as can be.?

Marvin did some research and learned that veterinarians sometimes prescribe medications for pets suffering from a lack of sunlight.

?It was at this moment that I knew I was on to something,? Marvin said. ?I realized that no one was providing a natural treatment for depression in pets.?

Product instructions indicate that the minimum effective dose is 30-45 minutes and pets should gravitate on their own toward the box.

Sol Box retails for about $200 and is marketed as beneficial for both dogs and cats. More information can be found at pawsitivelighting.com.

Vet visits down

A report issued last month by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) revealed that most pet owners consider their furry friends members of the family, but many do not visit a veterinarian for preventive care.

The ?2012 U.S. Pet Ownership & Demographics Sourcebook? contains results of a national survey conducted in early 2012. The AVMA survey polled more than 50,000 households and is conducted every five years.

Survey results showed that at the end of 2011, there were about 70 million pet dogs and 74.1 million pet cats in the U.S. Roughly 66 percent of dog owners and 56 percent of cat owners said they consider their pets family members, but nearly 11 percent of dog owners and about 27 percent of cat owners said they only took their pets to the vet when they were sick. Some said they never visited the vet.

Dr. Doug Aspros, AVMA president, said pet owners should keep in mind that preventive care can save them money in the long run.

?Potential health problems in pets can be diagnosed early and costs can be reduced if our pets visit the veterinarian on a regular basis,? he said.

Obama, Biden team being sworn in for second term in office

WASHINGTON (AP) ? On the cusp of his second term, President Barack Obama solemnly honored the nation's fallen soldiers Sunday before taking the oath of office in an intimate White House ceremony, a swearing-in ritual he will repeat 24 hours later before a massive crowd at the Capitol.

The day began with a morning swearing-in ceremony for Vice President Joe Biden, who began four more years as the nation's second in command. Biden then joined the president at Arlington National Cemetery for a wreath-laying ceremony on a crisp, sun-splashed January day.

Obama and Biden jointly placed a large wreath, adorned with red, white and blue ribbon, in front of Arlington's Tomb of the Unknowns. Placing their hands over their hearts, the two leaders stood solemnly as a bugler played "Taps."

From there, Obama joined his family at a church service in downtown Washington celebrating his inauguration as well as Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The president's public swearing-in on Monday coincides with the national holiday marking the fallen civil rights leader's birthday, and Obama has invoked King's memory throughout the lead-up to the inauguration.

The Rev. Jonathan V. Newton, an assistant pastor at Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church, prayed for God to prepare Obama for battle, "because sometimes enemies insist on doing it the hard way."

Sunday's centerpiece would be Obama's late morning swearing-in for a second term in office. Only a small group of family members was expected to attend Obama's Sunday swearing-in, including first lady Michelle Obama and daughters Malia and Sasha. A few reporters would also be on hand to witness the event.

Biden was surrounded by family and friends for his brief swearing-in at the Naval Observatory, his official residence in northwest Washington. Justice Sonia Sotomayor, appointed by Obama as the first Hispanic to serve on the Supreme Court, administered the oath of office to Biden, who placed his hand on a Bible his family has used since 1893.

"I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States," Biden said as he recited the oath.

Among the 120 guests on hand to witness the vice president's second swearing-in were Attorney General Eric Holder, departing Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and several Democratic lawmakers.

Sunday's subdued ceremonies are a function of the calendar and of the Constitution, which says presidents automatically begin their new terms at noon on Jan. 20. Because that date fell this year on a Sunday ? a day on which inaugural ceremonies historically are not held ? organizers scheduled a second, public swearing-in for Monday.

A crowd of up to 800,000 people is expected to gather on the National Mall to witness that event, which will take place on the Capitol's red, white and blue bunting-draped west front. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, who famously flubbed the oath of office that Obama took in 2009, was to swear the president in both days.

Once the celebrations are over, Obama will plunge into a second-term agenda still dominated by the economy, which slowly churned out of recession during his first four years in office. The president will also try to cement his legacy with sweeping domestic changes, pledging to achieve both an immigration overhaul and stricter gun laws despite opposition from a divided Congress.

But for one weekend at least, Washington was putting politics aside. Obama called the nation's inaugural traditions "a symbol of how our democracy works and how we peacefully transfer power."

"But it should also be an affirmation that we're all in this together," he said Saturday as he opened a weekend of inaugural activities at a Washington elementary school.

Obama was to take the oath of office shortly before noon in the White House Blue Room, an oval space with majestic views of the South Lawn and the Washington Monument.

The room, named for the color of the drapes, upholstery and carpet, primarily has been a reception room as well as the site of the only presidential wedding in the White House, when President Grover Cleveland married Frances Folsom in 1886.

Obama and Biden were to address supporters Sunday evening at an inaugural reception.

The president planned to save his most expansive remarks for Monday's inaugural address to the crowd gathered on the Mall and millions more watching across the country and around the world. Obama started working on the speech in early December and was still tinkering with it into the weekend, aides said.

The president's address will set the stage for the policy objectives he seeks to achieve in his second term, including speeding up the economic recovery, passing comprehensive immigration and gun control measures and ending the war in Afghanistan. Aides said Obama would save the specifics of those agenda items for his Feb. 12 State of the Union address.

Local officials were busy touching up Washington for the hundreds of thousands of guests arriving for Monday's swearing-in. Work crews were trimming overgrown grass and trash from walkways along city underpasses, erecting first aid tents and setting up traffic detours. Swarms of tourists roamed city streets easily on Sunday ahead of the pedestrian gridlock sure to come with Monday's full inaugural program.

The president launched a weekend of inaugural activities Saturday by heading up a National Day of Service. Along with his family, Obama helped hundreds of volunteers spruce up a Washington area elementary school.

Obama wore rubber gloves, picked up a paint brush and helped volunteers stain a bookshelf.

Obama added the service event to the inaugural schedule in 2009 and is hoping it becomes a tradition followed for future presidents.

Mrs. Obama, speaking to volunteers Sunday, espoused the importance of giving back in the midst of the weekend of pomp, circumstance and celebration.

"The reason why we're here, why we're standing here, why we're able to celebrate this weekend is because a lot of people worked hard and supported us, and we've got a job to do, and this is a symbol of the kind of work that we need to be doing the next four years," Michelle Obama said at Burrville Elementary.

What Values Underlie Sex Education? | Psychology Today

By John T. Chirban

Jim?s daughter Marcie is in fifth grade attending a private school where her dad teaches. Jim came to see me because of unexplained ?anxiety.?

At first, it was hard to zero in on the cause of Jim?s anxiety. Eventually, nervously laughing, Jim tearfully disclosed that he felt he let Marcie down by not standing up for what he believed, as her class was being taught how to place condoms on dildos. Jim said he felt helpless and couldn?t do anything to help Marcie. He and his wife had taken the step of signing a waiver to excuse their daughter from the program. So Marcie was excluded from the sex ed class and given extra assignments. However, the instructor had announced to the student body that only three students in the entire school were not participating in the sexuality curriculum, ?which,? she said, ?was for everyone?s well-being.? In the end, Marcie suffered from being publicly identified.

After that, Jim wanted to stay out of it to save his daughter from any more humiliation. Yet he, his wife, and Marcie were uncomfortable with the class. Jim said he felt like he was ?leading the lamb to the slaughter,? as the program encouraged sexual behaviors rather than simply providing age-appropriate information and also felt that the program did not promote a context of loving relationships where he felt sexuality is best placed.

What do you think about Jim and his wife?s situation? What about Marcie?s? How would you manage it if you didn?t agree with what?s taught in sex ed? Should your child participate in a sex education program when it runs counter to your family?s values? Is sex education value-free and simply informative even when it seems to be directing kids in certain behaviors? On the other hand, how can school systems align sex education programs to embrace diverse family?s values? Can a program possibly adequately meet the various values and needs of students and parents?

???? In April 2006, a Lexington, Massachusetts, teacher used the children?s book King & King as part of a lesson plan on the subject of marriage for a second grade class. King & King is a fairy tale in which a prince falls in love and lives happily ever after?with another prince.

???? Parents? reactions mainly fell into two camps. Some argued the school was indoctrinating children to accept gay marriage as healthy and normal?and in response to this curriculum they demanded a broader parental notification law in the state. Others maintained that the school?s job is to teach children about the world they live in?and Massachusetts, at that time, was the only state in the nation to sanction same-sex marriages.

???? How would you react if your child were in this classroom??

???? As teaching your kids about sex is an ongoing discussion, part of your job is to help your kids make sense of what they learn in school. So open up the lines for any questions and thoughts your kid may have about stuff at school?there are likely to be at least a few! Keep in mind that you could use any story as an important teaching opportunity to discuss viewpoints different from your own. And recognize that your reactions send messages?both verbal and nonverbal?to your children about the issue and sexuality generally.

???? While your school?s sex ed program is important and may solicit your voice, you may not be prepared to confront and shape the sex education program. Yet, take heart, studies confirm that the quality and importance of our communications at home strongly influences our children?s life and often has far-greater impact than sex ed programs.

???? Parents who discuss sex in a loving and honest way actually decrease the likelihood that their child will engage in sexual activity. In fact, kids who share a good relationship with their parents and can honestly discuss their concerns about sex, dating, and love are less influenced by peer behavior regarding drugs, alcohol, and sex and report less depression and anxiety and more self-reliance and self-esteem. These kids are also more successful in school and develop more meaningful relationships.

Chirban, Ph.D., Th.D. is a clinical instructor in psychology at Harvard Medical School and author of How to Talk With Your Kids About Sex (Thomas Nelson, 2012) that explains what kids need from parents at each stage of their sexual development and how parents can effectively communicate. ?SNL? skewers Lance Armstrong

(Saturday Night Live)

"Saturday Night Live" wasted no time in tackling the pair of scandals that transcended the sports world last week, using its cold-opening sketch to skewer both Lance Armstrong's doping confession and the hoax involving Notre Dame football star Manti Te'o and his fake dead girlfriend, Lennay Kekua.

Armstrong, played by Jason Sudeikis, sat down for an interview with Piers Morgan, played by fellow cast member Taran Killam.

"It wasn't really all that sophisticated, Piers," Sudeikis' Armstrong said of his drug use. "All I actually did was steroids, testosterone, human growth hormone, EPO and I replaced all of my blood with better blood."

"Is that sophisticated? You know, I don't know," he continued. "Is it cheating? Maybe. Am I sorry I did it? Yes ... ish. P.S. No."

Armstrong added: "The most important thing is I never, ever called anyone a fat bitch."

Manti Te?o, played by "SNL's" Bobby Moynihan, told Morgan he was devastated by the hoax.

"It's even more devastating for my girlfriend Lennay," he said. ?A couple months ago, she called me up on the phone and was like ?Hey, I have some bad news: I?m dead.? And I said ?Oh no! Do you need a ride to the funeral???

To close the sketch, Kate McKinnon revived her Jodie Foster impersonation to try to explain the actress' bizarre speech at last week's Golden Globes.

"Allow me to set the record straight once and for all," she said. "I'm going to set the record straight--loud and proud right? Here we go. I am gaaame for anything."

She continued: "Also, I am officially a Leslie Nielsen fan. I just thought you all should know that. Oh, and I'm obsessed with 'Girls' the show. I just love the show. That is such a giant weight off my lesbian chest."

Calculated Risk: Fed's Beige Book: Economic activity expanded at ...

by Bill McBride on 1/16/2013 02:00:00 PM

Fed's Beige Book:

Reports from the twelve Federal Reserve Districts indicated that economic activity has expanded since the previous Beige Book report, with all twelve Districts characterizing the pace of growth as either modest or moderate. ... Overall, holiday sales were reported as being modestly higher than in 2011, though sales were below expectations for contacts in many of the Districts.

Since the previous Beige Book, consumer spending increased to some degree in all twelve Districts. Across the nation, holiday sales grew modestly compared with last year but came in below expectations in the New York, Cleveland, Atlanta, Chicago, and San Francisco Districts. ... Citing concerns that consumers will spend cautiously due to ongoing fiscal uncertainty, retail contacts and auto dealers reported a slightly dimmer, though positive, outlook for future sales.

And on real estate:
Existing residential real estate activity expanded in all Districts that reported; growth rates were described as moderate or strong in nine Districts. Contacts in the Boston District attributed their strong sales growth to low interest rates, affordable prices, and rising rents. All Districts reporting on price levels saw increases; New York and Chicago reported only very minor increases. The five Districts that reported on housing inventories all reported falling levels. New residential construction (including repairs) expanded in all but one District of those Districts that reported. Contacts in the Kansas City District reported that increased lumber and drywall costs limited construction, causing a slight decline this period. Hurricane Sandy disrupted construction activity initially in New York, but this has since led to increased work for subcontractors on repairs and reconstruction.

Though a little weaker than residential real estate, reports on sales and leasing of nonresidential real estate are still mostly positive--described as modest on average. The Boston District reported a drop in leasing beyond normal seasonal trends; contacts cited fiscal cliff uncertainty as a factor. Minneapolis and Kansas City reported increased demand and tightening commercial real estate markets. Philadelphia, St. Louis, and Dallas all reported more modest increases in nonresidential real estate activity. Nonresidential construction is weaker than residential, with only slight to modest growth.

This suggests sluggish growth overall, with "moderate or strong" growth for real estate.

The final Strikeforce?s Three Stars

It's now all over for Strikeforce, the regional promotion that grew in size and strength to be a player for a few years in MMA. In their final show, the fighters rose to the occasion to give a memorable final impression. Which ones really stood out?

No. 1 star -- Tarec Saffiedine: Heading into the Strikeforce welterweight championship bout with Nate Marquardt, most of the discussion was about Marquardt's return to the UFC. It was just assumed he would keep the belt, but Saffiedine had other plans. Using a smart game plan filled with punishing leg kicks, Saffiedine picked apart Marquardt on the way to a five-round decision. It will be fun to see what he can do against UFC welterweights.

No. 2 star -- Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza: Ed Herman threw an illegal upkick at Jacare. The referee inexplicably stood them up to restart after the kick. Even with all that, Jacare still managed the smoothest submission of the new year of MMA. With such a great grappling game, Souza should have plenty of interesting match-ups in the UFC.

No. 3 star (tie) -- K.J Noons and Ryan Couture: During the preliminary card, Noons and Couture fought out a bloody battle that was the best of the night. Though it appeared Noons had the upper hand, the judges called the fight in Couture's favor. But the good news for both fighters is that they won their bout in a way to all but ensure their spots in the UFC.

Who were your stars? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

CES 2013 by the numbers

CES is pretty big. If you haven't already had it explained, it's a sprawling collection of cavernous halls, hotel suites and in-town meetings that require an unhealthy amount of coach trips and taxi rides. We've pulled together some numbers to help demonstrate the sort of scale involved but when you involve the likes of Sony, Samsung, Panasonic and more than 150,000 attendees, it's going to get a little messy.

Another blow to Windows RT as Samsung backs out

Samsung has announced that they will not try to sell a Windows RT device in the US, and it is unclear whether they will introduce one in other markets either.? Samsung came to the decision based on feedback from their retail partners, who say there is only modest demand for Windows RT, and that it would take too much investment in educating potential customers on the differences between Windows RT and Windows 8.? There were also concerns regarding the hardware for the device, and Samsung decided that they didn?t want to have to make sacrifices in features, like available memory, just to meet the lower price point.

For those who may not be familiar with Windows RT, it is a version of Windows 8 which will run on tablets with ARM hardware.? ARM cpus and chipsets are found in many types of portable devices, including phones and tablets.? But Windows RT and ARM hardware are not compatible with older computer programs which run on most Windows systems.? And so, the software available for RT devices is quite limited at the moment.

Samsung is not the only one to back out of making a Windows RT tablet, as Hewlett-Packard scuttled plans for such a device back in June, saying that their business clients would prefer Intel based equipment running Windows 8.? Toshiba also pulled out in August, saying development problems would have delayed shipment of any RT device.

Even though Samsung has stepped back from Windows RT at the moment, they did say that if there is sufficient demand for an RT tablet in the US market, they would reconsider this decision.? Mike Abary, the Samsung senior vice president who oversees the company?s PC and tablet business in the U.S said:? ?We want to see how the market develops for RT.? It?s not something we?re shelving permanently. It?s still a viable option for us in the future, but now might not be the right time.?

Its hard to see how the market will develop if no one invests in it to begin with.

10 Significant Trends in Finance | The Big Picture

>

My Sunday Washington Post Business Section column is out, and its a doozy: Rather than do the usual forecasts for the new year silliness, I thought it might be interesting to look instead at the major trends driving the world of finance.

Its called 10 trends to watch in ?nance for 2013, and the concept behind it is that most people are so busy guessing what might happen in the future, they forget to understand what is happening right now.

My position is understanding precisely what just occurred is much more important than guessing about the future:

?It?s a winter ritual: Seers, prognosticators and other gurus tell us which stocks to buy for the year ahead, where they think the Dow will close in December and which momentous events will take place.

History teaches us that the majority of these charlatans will be wrong, and the ones who get it right are mostly lucky. If you have been reading my column for any length of time, you know to ignore them. (See 2011?s Forecaster Folly.)

When it comes to predictions, I do the following: Note down the forecasts made this month and look back at them in a year. Repeat every year. I use my desktop calendar and an e-mail Web service called Followupthen.com to keep me on track. I started doing this almost a decade ago, and I found it terribly liberating. It will be always be instructive, and, as with the class of 2008 forecasters, occasionally hilarious.

Doing this taught me to ignore the forecasts I see or read, as well as to keep the piehole in the middle of my face closed whenever anyone asks me for a forecast. I defer, saying, ?I have no idea. No one does.? It is fun to watch the TV anchors? heads spin like Linda Blair?s in ?The Exorcist.?

A better use of your time? Discern what?s happening here and now. It?s been my experience that investors spend so much time worrying about what might come next that they miss what just happened..?>

The rest of the column articulates those 10 trends. (I think this may be my first front-page-of-the-business-section column!)

There are a couple of charts at the Post I pulled together from Bianco research & FRED, but the artwork is really kinda cool:

Simplest clock yet has but a single atom

A clock based on just a single atom ? the simplest clock yet ? has now been devised, researchers say.

This new device to measure time could help lead to a radically new way to define mass as well, scientists added.

In addition, this achievement suggests that researchers might one day build even more exotic clocks ? ones based on antimatter, or ones based on no particles at all.

Fundamentally, all clocks measure time by relying on parts that repeat behavior in regular patterns. For instance, a year is defined by how long it takes for Earth to complete an orbit around the sun.

The most accurate clocks that currently exist are atomic clocks. These depend on how atoms switch between two distinct energy levels. Essentially, these clocks rely on at least two particles ? the nucleus of an atom, and an electron leaping back and forth between different levels of energy.

Defining time
However, could clocks get simpler still?

"We were interested in what the simplest clocks are to explore the question of what time is," said researcher Holger M?ller, a physicist at the University of California at Berkeley. "If you say that, say, you can't measure time with less than two particles, does that mean that anything below two particles doesn't experience time at all?"

The researchers theorized it was possible to create a clock made up of just one particle. To understand, one starts with Einstein's famous equation E=mc2, which showed that matter can be converted to energy and vice versa. One consequence of this, called de Broglie's matter-wave hypothesis, suggests that matter can also behave like waves. As such, a particle of matter can in principle behave like a wave that oscillates in a regular manner, thus acting like a clock. [ What's That? Your Physics Questions Answered ]

"We've shown that one single particle really can measure time," M?ller told LiveScience.

The problem with making a clock from a particle of matter is that the frequency at which it oscillates "should be so high that one should never be able to measure it," M?ller said. To get over this hurdle, the scientists relied on a phenomenon known as time dilation, another consequence of Einstein's theory of relativity. This suggests that as objects move away from and back to a location, they experience less elapsed time than objects that stayed at that location the entire time.

Splitting atoms
The researchers re-created this phenomenon using lasers on cesium atoms. "We essentially split an atom into two halves, and had one stay where it is and the other go forward and come back," M?ller said. "A tiny, tiny bit less time elapsed for the half that moved, so it oscillated less."

The fact that one half of the atom oscillated less than the other meant that when these halves are reunited, they did not recombine perfectly, but interference occurred that the scientists could measure. By knowing the size of this discrepancy and the extent to which the researchers disturbed the atom, the researchers could deduce the original frequency at which the atom oscillated.

The moving half of the atom took about a third of a second less than the other half to make its round trip. Each half of the atom made about 10^25 oscillations ? a 1 with 25 zeroes behind it, equal to 10 trillion trillion ? but the moving half made about 100,000 fewer oscillations than the still half.

"We have demonstrated that you can make a clock from a single massive particle," said researcher Justin Brown, a physicist at the University of California at Berkeley. [ Wacky Physics: The Coolest Little Particles in Nature ]

At present, this new clock can tell time about as precisely as the first atomic clocks developed about 60 years ago and about a billion times less precisely than the best current atomic clocks, known as optical clocks. Although it remains uncertain whether this new clock will ever match the performance of optical clocks, the researchers say it could help solve a problem today regarding one of the world's most important units of measurement ? the kilogram.

Since 1889, the kilogram has been defined as the mass of a specific golf-ball-size cylinder of platinum and iridium, which is housed in a vault outside Paris. The problem with defining the kilogram on this object ? known formally as the International Prototype Kilogram and more familiarly called Le Grande K ? is that contaminants settling on its surface can make it gain weight while cleaning it could make it lose weight, potentially wreaking havoc on one of the main ways science describes everything in the universe.

As such, researchers have in recent years sought to base the kilogram not arbitrarily on an artifact, but on more fundamental constants. The new clock that M?ller and his colleagues developed links time to the mass of an atom. As such, not only could atoms be used to measure time, but also time could be used to help define mass.

For instance, as new standard weights, scientists can manufacture incredibly pure crystals of silicon dubbed Avogadro spheres, which are created so precisely that the number of atoms inside is known to high accuracy.

"Our clock and the current best Avogadro spheres would make one of the best realizations of the newly defined kilogram," M?ller said. "Knowing the ticking rate of our clock is equivalent to knowing the mass of the particle, and once the mass of one atom is known, the masses of others can be related to it."

There are other strategies that exist on which to base the kilogram? ? for instance, by using what is known as a watt balance that uses magnetic force to levitate objects, defining their masses by how much they levitate in response to the magnetic field.

"It's good to have multiple ways of measuring mass ? it provides a cross-check for consistency," M?ller said.

Future of measuring time
In the future, M?ller suggested it might be possible to create even simpler clocks ? ones that are based on no particles at all. Quantum theory suggests that what may seem like vacuum is actually filled with "virtual particles" that regularly pop in and out of existence, generating measurable forces.

"It'd be fascinating to see if we can make a clock based off zero particles ? you don't even need one particle, just the hypothetical possibility of a particle to measure time," M?ller said.

Another interesting possibility is developing a version of this clock that is based on antimatter instead of normal matter. When antimatter is brought into contact with its normal matter, it annihilates its counterpart. One of the greatest mysteries in the universe is why the visible matter in the universe is nearly all normal matter and not antimatter. [ The 9 Greatest Mysteries in Physics ]

"You can have an antimatter clock run for a year as the Earth moves closer to the sun and then farther away, since the Earth's orbit around the sun is not perfectly circular, but slightly elliptical. This means the strength of the gravitational field it experiences would change over time," M?ller said.

"It would be interesting to compare a clock of normal matter with a clock of antimatter, to see if they behave the same way in relation to gravity as expected. Such a test of the laws of physics would be fascinating if it was found that matter and antimatter behaved differently."

The scientists detailed their findings online Thursday in the journal Science.
