Spider-silk skin stops a speeding bullet

Caitlin Stier, video intern

What if your skin could resist a speeding bullet? Now a new futuristic tissue designed by artist Jalila Essa?di, which reinforces human skin cells with spider silk, can stop a whizzing projectile without being pierced. Although its threads may look fragile, a spider-silk weave is four times stronger than Kevlar, the material used in bulletproof vests.

In the first clip, the bioengineered skin cushions a bullet fired at half speed. But its resistance has its limits: when shot at a full speed of 329 m/s, the bullet pierces the material and travels through it. The same tests were also performed with piglet skin, human skin and human skin fused with regular silkworm silk, which were all penetrated by bullets of both speeds.

An international team worked together to create the new material. First, transgenic goats and silkworms equipped to produce spider-silk proteins spun out the raw material at the synthetic biology lab at Utah State University. The cocoons were then shipped to South Korea, where they were reeled into thread, before being woven into fabric in Germany. The modified silk was then wedged between bioengineered skin cells developed by biochemist Abdoelwaheb El Ghalbzouri at the Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands. After five weeks of incubation, the hybrid skin was ready for target practice.

In addition to exploring the material artistically, Essa?di is also looking into practical uses, such as skin transplants. Spider silk is already being developed by other teams for high-tech applications, which range from artificial corneas to brain implants.

Therapy pets popular at Ark. health-care center | The Associated ...

Face grinning, tail wagging and a taut leash behind her, Misty, a mixed-breed dog, led her owner, Vi Herring, down the hallway at a local retirement home amid calls seeking her attention.

"Dragged her owner" probably would be more accurate.

She's just so excited to see everyone," Herring, 68, said from over her shoulder.

Herring and Misty, who serves as a therapy dog, frequent Crawford Healthcare & Rehabilitation, 2010 Main St. in Van Buren, and visit with the elderly residents to break the monotony of their day. Even though Misty pulled Herring most of the time ? Herring was out of breath after a few laps around the retirement home ? the animal was only a command away from stopping and waiting for the Rudy resident.

The most striking thing about Misty is how polite she was. If a resident didn't want her near, then she would just move to the next person. The majority of the residents couldn't wait to pet her, and she would oblige by patiently sitting, looking at them with ice-blue eyes and putting her head within reach.

Opal Groman, a 76-year-old resident who has lived at the home for four years, said she grew up in the country, so dogs were a necessary part of her life.

"Dogs bring back all kinds of memories," she said while waiting for a game of bingo to begin.

Herring, who has also been a missionary in China, said she never planned to use Misty as a therapy dog. Her husband, Tim, is in charge of maintenance at the home, and he told everyone about Misty "and her beautiful blue eyes," Herring said. Then Toni Holderfield, the home's executive director, invited Herring to show Misty at one of the home's dog shows.

That's when Misty, who weighs about 85 pounds, approached a man with Parkinson's disease and showed how gentle she could be.

"He was in a wheelchair bed that was real high, and Misty jumped up on his bed and just loved that little guy so much," Herring said. ". I want you to know she was so incredibly gentle; it was unbelievable."

Holderfield said Misty is just one of many animals that frequent the home. Dogs of all sizes, cats and even Holderfield's Quaker parrot visit with the residents. There is also a bird aviary in one section of the home.

"I'm all for pet therapy, any pet therapy," Holderfield said from her office.

She has witnessed how a dog can help a resident in a retirement home. Near the end of 2010, Holderfield said, a family friend had just rescued a litter of Labrador puppies, and she and her husband adopted the litter's runt. The puppy had to be bottle fed, and she knew she couldn't care for the puppy and do her job effectively, so she allowed a resident, whom she described as "very sad," to care for it.

"It got to the point where that was her dog, and she just let me take it home," Holderfield said.

As it grew, the dog took to a habit of laying across the woman's legs; a fact that made a state surveyor nervous. The surveyor tried to explain to the woman that it wasn't in her best interest to have the now-large Labrador laying on her.

"She said, 'That dog is my best interest, and you can leave,'" Holderfield said. "So the surveyor came out and said, 'She just threw me out!'"

For residents like Groman, visits from the animals are priceless.

"It lifts them up," she said. "If a person's down and they come in, then they are a different person when the dogs leave. You can see it. . It'll lift them up."

Dogs have a way of connecting with people on an emotional level, Groman said.

"It's a love that they have for people that they'll bring out in people," Groman said. "When you're around a person that likes you and loves you, you see it. Same way with a dog."

Herring agreed.

"You take a good loyal dog, and they'll die for you. And I know Misty would die for me if I were ever attacked or hurt," Herring said.

Herring acquired Misty about two years ago when a friend fell on hard times. Herring said her friend told her Misty is a half-and-half mix between a wolf and a malamute. However, Misty is most likely several generations removed from her wolf ancestors, if she has any wolf in her at all, said Nancy Brown, who has worked with wolfdogs for more than 20 years and is the founder of Full Moon Farm, a nonprofit rescue and sanctuary for wolfdogs and other animals in North Carolina.

Brown made that comment after seeing photos of Misty.

No matter the breed, Misty's effect on the residents can be judged by the smiling faces she invoked.

"If Misty and I can come up here and bring these people good memories and a little joy and a smile, that's the best thing we can do," Herring said.

Gingrich's baggage gives voters pause in Panhandle

(AP) ? Newt Gingrich's personal and political baggage is giving even the most hard-core Republicans pause in a conservative swath of the state.

"Not Gingrich" is how Annette Purvis says she plans to vote. "I've never liked Gingrich. Never. Never in the history of Gingrich."

She's turned off by what she calls his moral and ethical issues. He's been divorced twice, is an admitted adulterer and was the first House speaker to be reprimanded by his colleagues for ethical misconduct. All that has Purvis, a 49-year-old wife and mother from Laurel Hill near the Alabama border, looking elsewhere. "I'll probably do Romney," she adds, her hesitation apparent.

Marty Upfield, a 64-year-old retiree from Pensacola, seems equally uneasy with Gingrich. She, too, pointed to Gingrich's political record and personal background as a problem. She's considering voting for Mitt Romney, who she says isn't conservative enough, even though her political views are more in line with Gingrich's positions.

"But it is about trust," says Upfield. "I need to have a little more certainty that he's changed in some ways."

This deep reluctance to back Gingrich was voiced by many of the dozen and a half people interviewed last week in this city in the Florida Panhandle that borders the Gulf of Mexico to the south and west and Alabama to the north. Gingrich's past, it seemed, was heavily influencing decisions about who to back. Many said they were resigned to choosing Romney.

In one of the most conservative parts of the state, many of those interviewed said they see their political philosophy more in line with Gingrich ? who led the GOP revolution that took control of the House in 1994 ? than with Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who in the past has espoused more moderate positions on social issues. But many also said they're considering voting for Romney, or already did during the state's early voting period, because they fear that Gingrich's history ? both personally and professionally ? will hurt him in a general election match up against President Barack Obama.

"I really like him. He's one of the finest speakers. He's got fantastic memory and recall," said Tim Fuller of Gingrich.

But Fuller, 68, and wife Vicki, 67, didn't pick him.

"We voted for the more electable candidate," Fuller said, adding that they chose Romney ? "the lesser of two evils."

On the minds of many interviewed: Gingrich's ethics case while serving as House speaker, the $1.65 million his businesses made off Freddie Mac before he criticized the mortgage giant during his campaign, and his three marriages.

"I like him. I like his mannerisms. I just don't think I can vote for him. There's too much out there," said Bonnie Meenen, 64. Romney may get her vote because of that.

Some also were put off by Gingrich's personality.

"I think Newt's temper is too short," said David Nobles, 57, who voted for Romney. "It came down to Newt and Mitt, and Mitt just seems like more presidential material than Newt."

That Gingrich, who has emerged as the more conservative alternative to Romney, doesn't have a lock on this part of the state, regardless of his flaws, may not bode well for his prospects in other, more diverse parts of Florida ahead of Tuesday's pivotal primary. And the reluctance among some Republicans here to embrace Gingrich indicates that Romney's strategy to raise questions about Gingrich's character may be working.

Over the past week, Romney and his allies have castigated Gingrich on the campaign trail and in TV ads blanketing the state.

"While Florida families lost everything in the housing crisis, Newt Gingrich cashed in," says a Romney campaign ad airing in this state. The commercial says that Gingrich collected more than $1.6 million from "the scandal-ridden agency that helped create the crisis."

Romney's team has taken a more subtle approach in attacking Gingrich for his flawed personal life. He has been emphasizing his own 42-year marriage to the same woman, as well as his five sons and numerous grandchildren, as a way to contrast himself to Gingrich. And an outside group backing Romney has run ads mentioning Gingrich's "baggage."

A Quinnipiac University poll released Friday showed Romney leading Gingrich, 38 to 29 percent. Among voters who identify as conservative, Romney and Gingrich are in a virtual tie.

Report: Man spends 2 years in solitary after DWI arrest

A man in New Mexico has been awarded $22 million after being tossed in solitary confinement for 2 years following a DWI arrest. KOB-TV's Marissa Torres reports.

By Elizabeth Chuck, msnbc.com

A New Mexico man who?said he was?forced to pull his own tooth while in solitary confinement because he was denied access to a dentist has been awarded $22 million due to inhumane treatment by New Mexico's Dona Ana County Jail.

Stephen Slevin was arrested in August of 2005 for driving while intoxicated, then thrown in jail for two years. He was in solitary at Dona Ana County Jail for his entire sentence and basically forgotten about and never given a trial, he told?NBC station KOB.com Tuesday night.

"[Jail guards were] walking by me every day, watching me deteriorate," Slevin said. "Day after day after day, they did nothing, nothing?at all,?to get me any help."

Slevin's medical problems extended beyond his dental issues, he said.?His toenails started curling around his foot because they were so long, he told KOB.com.?And his countless requests to see a doctor for depression medication were ignored, he said.

He said his lawsuit "has never been about the money. I've always wanted this to make a statement."

The $22 million settlement, awarded by a federal jury Tuesday, is one of the largest prisoner civil rights settlements in?U.S. history,?according to KOB.com.

"I wanted people to know that there are?people at The Dona Ana County Jail that?are doing things like this to people and getting away with it," said?Slevin, who now suffers from PTSD and believes he will have to take medication for life as a result. "Why they did what they did, I have no idea."

The mistreatment started from the moment his client was arrested, Slevin's attorney, Matt Coyte, told msnbc.com.

"He was driving through New Mexico and arrested for a DWI, and he allegedly was in a stolen vehicle.?Well, it was a car he had borrowed from a friend; a friend had given him a car to drive across the country," Coyte said.

NBC News

Slevin was depressed at the time, Coyte explained, and wanted to get out of New Mexico. Instead, he found himself in jail.

"When he gets put in the jail, they think he's suicidal, and they put him in a padded cell for three days, but never give him any treatment."

Nor did they give him a trial, Coyte said.?Slevin said he never saw a judge during his time in confinement.

After three days in a padded cell, jail guards transferred Slevin into solitary confinement without explanation.

"Their policy is to then just put them in solitary" if they appear to have mental health issues,?Coyte told msnbc.com.

Dona Ana County officials were tight-lipped about the case, refusing to answer questions about whether any jail employees were reprimanded or fired over Slevin's treatment.

"We do not discuss personnel issues," Jess Williams, Dona Ana County's public information director, told msnbc.com.

Williams also wouldn't comment on whether?the $22 million the county was ordered to pay would come from taxpayer money, saying only, "Dona Ana County will?appeal the verdict."?

He?said no?county officials would answer questions about why Slevin was held for so long without going to trial, or any other questions related to the legal parts of the case.?

'Insanity builds'
While in solitary confinement, a prisoner is entitled to one hour per day out of the cell, but often times, Slevin wasn't even granted that, Coyte said. He was deprived of showers and grew fungus underneath his skin. He lost his will to even want to get out and live in the outside world, Coyte told msnbc.com.

"Your insanity builds. Some people holler or throw feces out their cell doors," he said. "Others rock back and forth under a blanket for a year or more, which is what my client did."

By the time Slevin got out of jail, his hair was shaggy and overgrown, his beard long, and his face pale and sunken, a drastic contrast from the clean-shaven booking photo taken of him when he was arrested two years prior.

"Without that picture, we couldn't have gotten where we were," Coyte said of the lawsuit.

Slevin has support from friends and his sister, Coyte said.

"That's very helpful to him. He does have people to look after him."

While Slevin spoke very briefly on-camera to KOB.com after the jury awarded him his settlement, his attorney said he is hoping for some privacy now.

"Hs life has been devoted to survival [since his release from solitary]," Coyte told msnbc.com. "He is totally inequipped; he is hollow. They've removed his humanity from him."

His suffering hasn't been in vain though, Coyte said.

"He's a brave guy. When he says it's not about the money, he really means it. He wants no one to go through what he went through. And people do, in New Mexico and across this country."

Funeral service for Paterno as thousands mourn (AP)

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. ? Joe Paterno's family along with former players and assistant coaches made their way Wednesday to a campus spiritual center for the revered coach's funeral service, a moment of private mourning during a week in which thousands from Penn State were saying goodbye.

Paterno's family arrived just after 1 p.m. on two blue schools buses, the same kind the coach and his team rode to home games on fall Saturdays. His wife, Sue, was first off the bus, followed by his son and former assistant, Jay.

Another bus, a charter, carried more guests. Paterno's defensive coordinator Tom Bradley walked down the sidewalk with Penn State and NFL great Franco Harris.

The funeral, to be followed by a procession to a nearby cemetery for burial, was to culminate the second of three days of events for Paterno. Penn State will host a public memorial Thursday at its basketball arena.

Paterno, who died of lung cancer Sunday at 85, served as the school's head football coach for 46 years and won two national titles before being fired in November in the wake of a child sex-abuse scandal involving a former assistant.

The last few months have been emotionally wrenching for the school's students and alumni, but mourners over the past two days have focused on the inspiration Paterno provided to them, his accomplishments both on and off the field and his philanthropy.

Thousands of people indicated on a Facebook page that they intended to line the streets of State College as Paterno's funeral procession went by.

Two days of public viewing that ended about noon Wednesday drew many more, despite a wait that lasted hours. Members of Penn State's rugby team handed out hot chocolate Wednesday morning and took donations for the Special Olympics and the student run dance marathon fundraiser ? the two efforts Paterno's family requested receive donations in lieu of flowers.

First in line for Wednesday's viewing was David Brown, who left his home in Greensburg at midnight and drove more than two hours to State College, then prepared to wait a few hours outside until the doors opened.

"I wouldn't have been surprised if there were 1,000 people here," he said.

Behind him was John Myers, 70, who drove more than two hours from Tamaqua to arrive at 5 a.m. ? three hours before the viewing was scheduled to begin.

"It's worth it," Myers said. "Joe was one of the best, if not the best, football coaches ever."

Yet he was ousted just days before learning of his diagnosis. Paterno's son, Scott, has said his father was not bitter and remained upbeat until the end of his life.

Jerry Sandusky, the former assistant coach at the center of the abuse scandal, has been charged with molesting 10 boys over a period of 15 years. He has pleaded not guilty and is on bail, awaiting trial. Paterno was criticized in the days after Sandusky's arrest for not going to authorities outside campus when he was told of an allegation against the retired assistant in 2002. Paterno did notify two of his superiors at Penn State.

Mike McQueary, the then-graduate assistant who told Paterno about the alleged assault, went both to the public viewing and the funeral. Also at the service was former Athletic Director Tim Curley, who along with former university official Gary Schultz, is accused of perjury and failure to notify authorities about the McQueary allegation.

Most mourners, however, did not want to focus on the final days of Paterno's career.

Tom Haack, a small business owner from Camp Hill, took off work to pay his respects to Paterno at the viewing. The 59-year-old Haack said he chose Penn State to get his master's degree in business in the late 1980s, partly due to his admiration for the coach.

"His ethics, doing things the right way, excellence in everything you do, all of that attracted me and attracted many others to Penn State," he said. "I think his influence made it a better school and helped make it what it is today."

Inside the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center, the coach's body lay in a brown hardwood casket topped by a spray of white roses. About six feet away sat a stylized black-and-white picture of the man who became lovingly known on campus as "JoePa," smiling and peering out through his trademark thick-rimmed glasses.

Paterno's casket had an "honor guard" of two Penn State players ? one past and one present. Some mourners stopped for a moment of reflection, or to genuflect in the interfaith hall.

Others fought back tears and sniffles. The only other sounds were the occasional clicks of news photographers taking pictures.

Paterno won 409 games ? a record for major college football ? in a career admired by peers as much for its longevity as its success. Paterno also took as much pride in the program's graduation rates, often at or close to the top of the Big Ten.

"The passion, the love that he gave almost gave you a sense that you wanted to give it back to him," Penn State men's basketball coach Patrick Chambers said after escorting his team to the worship hall Tuesday evening. "We're forever indebted to him and we will continue to work as hard as we can."

'Lab lit' is a chance to show what we're really like

Sean O'Neill, contributor

JenniferRohnBW.jpgJenny Rohn is a cell biologist at University College London. She is the author of two "lab lit" novels inspired by her scientific experiences, and is founder of the Science is Vital organisation, which successfully campaigned against UK science funding cuts in 2010.

Are you a happy scientist?

Yes, very happy, because it's a wonderful life to live. There are great opportunities to travel the world and experience different laboratory cultures. There's a great buzz to it, particularly when you are young. The downside is that it's quite an insecure job - you never know where the next contract will come from. So it's a love/hate thing - love the job, hate the insecurity.

This job insecurity is something you are trying to change, as part of the Science is Vital movement...

Yes. Science is fuelled by young researchers. PhDs and postdocs do the vast majority of the actual "wet work" involved in science, yet there is only a tiny number of places for them at the top and very few middle positions. In other professions you have the top person, but then you have middle layers - it's like a pyramid. Science isn't like that. You have the lab head and then all these apprentices and trainees on short-term contracts. Science is Vital and other interested groups are involved in round-table discussions at the Royal Society to try to come up with a way to make science a more secure career.

Research isn't the only option for science graduates, though.

No, there are lots of great jobs out there that you can use your science degree or PhD for. You can take it to the private sector, make lots of money and do really interesting things.

?Which you did...

Yes, I had a great time working at a biotech start-up in the Netherlands before I came to University College London. At university we were always told: "Industry is the Dark Side! You can't go over there, you'll never come back." But that's not true at all. You can go over to the dark side and enjoy it, and you can come back.

You based your second book, The Honest Look, on your experiences in industry. What's so interesting about scientific life that you want to immortalise it through "lab lit"?

I think people have no idea what scientists do. They envision us as boffins in white coats, stroking fluffy white cats and laughing maniacally. They don't realise that it is a modern profession full of interesting, fun, creative, smart people, just like any other industry. "Lab lit" is a chance to show what it's like.

Complication in first triple limb transplant (AP)

ANKARA, Turkey ? A Turkish doctor whose 25-member team performed the world's first triple limb transplant ? two arms and a leg ? says the leg has been removed due to tissue incompatibility.

Dr. Omer Ozkan says 34-year-old Atilla Kavdir is in stable condition after the removal of the leg on Sunday, a day after it was attached. Kavdir lost his arms and right leg when he was 11 after he hit power lines outside his home with an iron rod to scare away pigeons and received an electric shock.

Ozkan said another patient who received a full face transplant from the same donor is in stable condition. It was Turkey's first face transplant.

Lombardo on Legal Archaeology

Paul A. Lombardo published an essay "Legal Archaeology: Recovering the Stories behind the Cases" in the Fall 2008 issue of the Journal of Law, Medicine, and Ethics. ?It reminded me of the wonderful chapters in this volume of "health law stories." ?Here are some excerpts that may be of interest:?

?Every lawsuit is a potential drama: a story of conflict, often with victims and villains, leading to justice done or denied. Yet a great deal, if not all, that we learn about the most noteworthy of lawsuits ? the truly great cases ? comes from reading the opinion of an appellate court, written by a judge who never saw the parties of the case, who worked at a time and a place far removed from the events that gave rise to litigation.

Rarely do we admit that the official factual account contained in an appellate opinion may have only the most tenuous relationship to the events that actually led the parties to court. The complex stories ? turning on small facts, seemingly trivial circumstances, and inter-contingent events ? fade away as the ?case? takes on a life of its own as it leaves the court of appeals.

How can a law professor correct this bias? ?Here are some of Lombardo's suggestions:?

The best starting point for doing legal archaeology is the case record itself. We all begin our investigation of cases by reading an appellate opinion. With some extra effort, we can retrieve the records and briefs that the judges relied on as they wrote that opinion. Of course, the case record that is printed for submission to an appellate tribunal will include only a small portion of the documents that make up the lawsuit?s paper trail.

Much of the material contained in the case record is now filed electronically, and for recent cases, may be available on the Web. But even for most pre-Internet cases, finding the proper repository for all these records is not difficult. A visit to your school?s reference librarian with copies of the articles referenced here should get you started.

Lombardo also suggests consulting newspapers and magazines, professional journals, and material generated by the parties and their lawyers. ?Though some students may complain of "reading overload," skillful editing can make the effort to contextualize the cases well worth everyone's while. ?I also anticipate that internet archives of particular helpful case studies will accumulate over time.

PIPA on life support -- is SOPA next? (Politico)

Capitol Hill?s effort to crack down on Internet piracy was hanging on for dear life Thursday after Senate leaders gave the green light to abandon ship following the Internet backlash led by Wikipedia, Google and other sites this week.

The signs of distress came from the top, as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid released Democrats from casting their lot with the PROTECT IP Act during a procedural vote scheduled for Tuesday. That also led to questions on the fate of the House Stop Online Piracy Act.

Reid's decision "means it's headed south fast and he is only keeping the vote scheduled to keep his word to Leahy," a senior Democratic aide told POLITICO.

Reid spokesman Adam Jentleson declined to comment on whether Reid would release Democrats.

Dealing another blow to PIPA, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Thursday urged Democrats to shelve the bill and put it aside for further study. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), the bill?s main booster, meanwhile is scrambling to hammer out a manager?s amendment to address concerns from the tech industry ? particularly Internet companies and search services ? and other lawmakers.

The piracy push has left companies and lobbies representing Hollywood and Silicon Valley bitterly divided.

Earlier this week, the bill lost the support of seven of its co-sponsors amid online protests against PIPA and SOPA that caused thousands of websites to go dark and also encouraged Web users to contact their representatives.

It?s caused many to question whether PIPA would survive the next 24 hours, let alone Tuesday?s vote.

Last week, at the insistence of tech interests and cybersecurity experts, Leahy pledged to remove one of the most controversial provisions of the bill, which?would have allowed the government to block the Web addresses of websites accused of peddling movies, music and knockoff products.

Eager to reach a compromise, Leahy discussed with Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.)?exempting search engine blocking from the bill?in a move that was designed to appease one powerful, staunch foe: Google.

But offering to put another measure on the chopping block may not be enough to salvage PIPA.

?PROTECT IP is important legislation and we're certainly glad Sen. Leahy is trying to save it, but there really is not a lot of time left to salvage this. Also, having an agreement doesn't mean we have the votes to pass it,? another Senate Democratic aide said. ?This is like death by a thousand cuts.?

It wasn?t always this way. At the beginning of the week, PIPA enjoyed the support of more than 40 co-sponsors, strong backing from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, unions and Hollywood lobbies, and Reid named the bill as one of his legislative priorities this year on ?Meet the Press.?

When asked if Leahy still plans to move the bill forward, a Senate Judiciary aide said the chairman is continuing to work with Kyl and others to reach a consensus.

Did O.J. Simpson Father Khloe Kardashian?!?

A-ha! The puzzle has been solved. The National Enquirer has discovered he identity of Khloe Kardashian's father, and the answer is a killer:

O.J. Simpson!

Following the ridiculous, unproven rumor that Khloe is the product of an affair between Kris Jenner and a mystery man, this tabloid has now published an equally ridiculous and unproven rumor: that the former Buffalo Bills running back and likely murderer was that man.

National Equirer Cover Story

Scandalous! Khloe looks JUST like O.J.'s daughter, Sydney!!!

The cover story should actually come as good news to the family. It's given Kim Kardashian a chance to prove she's not a robot, as she actually made us laugh with the following Tweet in response to this report:

"It makes sense now. Khloe u are so tan!"

'Bridesmaids' Director 'Pulling For' Melissa McCarthy Oscar

'I think we got a good shot with Melissa [for Best Supporting Actress],' Paul Feig tells us on the Golden Globes red carpet.
By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Joshua Horowitz

"Bridesmaids" might have walked away from the Golden Globes empty-handed, but the raunchy comedy is still considered a dark horse for the upcoming Oscar race. Nominees won't be announced until January 24, and many experts are guessing that the film might sneak into the pool of Best Picture nominees.

Director Paul Feig is similarly optimistic. MTV News caught up with him on the red carpet before the Globes where he chatted about his predictions for "Bridesmaids'" Oscar chances.

"I'm really pulling for Melissa [McCarthy]. I think we got a good shot with Melissa [for Best Supporting Actress]," he said. "I think the girls have a good shot for the screenplay."

But what about their Best Picture odds? Feig isn't holding his breath.

"Look, nothing would make me happier," he said. "I think that's a real tough one because the way the voting for the Academy is set up for Best Pictures this year is tough. We have to get a lot of, like, 'best movie of the year' votes, which, like, we're good, but we're not the best movie of the year. I'd like to say we were, but what an ass I would sound like if I did say that."

That lends itself to a different argument that says the Academy Awards should follow the Globes' model and separate the drama and comedy categories. As a comedic director and producer for over a decade, Feig said he sees the upside in that split.

His argument is that it's easier to create a showy drama that appeals to critics than a showy comedy that does the same. In his experience, showy comedies typically distance the intended audience, though that isn't always the case.

"I thought 'The Hangover' was very showy in that way, filmmaking-wise. But it's hard because most comedy needs to be very relatable. Like, if I were to do 'Bridesmaids' kind of very stylistic, I think I would alienate the audience, you know," he said. "As a filmmaker, my theory is always, 'Take the backseat. Don't show off. Let the girls be the focus.' "

Check out everything we've got on "Bridesmaids."

Syria ready to let monitors stay, rebel seeks U.N. action (Reuters)

BEIRUT (Reuters) ? Syria is ready to let Arab monitors extend their mission beyond this week, an Arab source said on Tuesday, but a rebel army chief said they should go as they had failed to curb a crackdown on protesters seeking President Bashar al-Assad's overthrow.

Damascus opposes broadening the scope of the Arab League observer mission, the source at the League said, but would accept a one-month extension of its mandate which expires on Thursday.

However, Riad al-Asaad, the Turkish-based commander of the rebel Free Syrian Army, called for international intervention to replace the observer team which is monitoring Syria's implementation of a League plan to end 10 months of bloodshed.

U.N. officials say more than 5,000 people have been killed in the violence across Syria and the government says 2,000 members of its security forces have died.

The Arab League must decide whether to withdraw its 165 monitors or keep them in Syria, even though they are expected to report that Damascus has not fully implemented a peace plan agreed on November 2. Arab foreign ministers are set to discuss the team's future on January 22.

"The outcome of the contacts that have taken place over the past week between the Arab League and Syria have affirmed that Syria will not reject the renewal of the Arab monitoring mission for another month ... if the Arab foreign ministers call for this at the coming meeting," the source said.

The Arab plan required Syria to halt the bloodshed, withdraw troops from cities, free detainees, provide access for the monitors and the media and open talks with opposition forces.

"FAILED MONITORS"

Rebel commander Asaad opposed any extension of the mandate.

"The Arab League and their monitors failed in their mission and though we respect and appreciate our Arab brothers for their efforts, we think they are incapable of improving conditions in Syria or resisting this regime," he told Reuters.

"For that reason we call on them to turn the issue over to the U.N. Security Council and we ask that the international community intervene because they are more capable of protecting Syrians at this stage than our Arab brothers," Asaad said.

The source said Beijing and Moscow had urged President Assad to accept an extension of the monitoring mission as a way to avert an escalation at the international level.

Syria would agree to an increase in the number of monitors, he said, but would not allow them to be given formal fact-finding duties or be allowed into "military zones" that are not included in the existing Arab peace plan.

Any change in the scope of the mission, whether to militarize it or let it investigate human rights abuses and potentially assign blame, would require a new agreement with Syria, the source said.

Qatar has proposed sending in Arab troops, a bold idea for the often sluggish League and one likely to be resisted by Arab rulers close to Assad and those worried about unrest at home.

Syria's foreign ministry said on Tuesday it was "astonished" at Qatar's suggestion, which it "absolutely rejected."

AN OLD ALLY

The League could ask the U.N. Security Council to act, but until now opposition from Russia and China has prevented the world body from even criticizing Syria, an old ally of Moscow.

Western diplomats said a Russian draft resolution handed to the council on Monday did not make clear if Moscow would accept tough language demanded by the West.

French Deputy Foreign Ministry spokesman Romain Nadal described Moscow's latest draft as disappointing, saying Paris had proposed constructive amendments to the Russian text.

"After a month of silence a new text has just been submitted by Russia, which still falls far short of responding to the reality in Syria," he said. "We've been saying this for months now: the Security Council's silence is scandalous."

Few Western powers favour any Libyan-style military action in Syria, which lies in the heart of the conflict-prone Middle East. Bordering Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan, Iraq and Israel, it is allied to Iran and the armed Lebanese Shi'ite Hezbollah group.

Iran condemned what it called foreign interference in the affairs of its closest Arab ally, Syria, and praised reforms President Assad has promised as "problem-solving."

"We are fundamentally against interfering in the affairs of other countries. We think it does not solve the problems but will only make them more complicated," Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast told a news conference.

Assad, while offering reform, has vowed to crush his opponents with an "iron fist," but Syrians braving bullets and torture chambers appear equally determined to add him to the list of the past year's toppled Arab leaders.

Army deserters and other rebels have taken up arms against security forces dominated by Assad's minority Alawite sect, pushing Sunni Muslim-majority Syria closer to civil war.

ROCKETS AND TANK FIRE

Syria's state news agency SANA reported on Tuesday that what it called terrorists had fired rockets, killing an officer and five of his men at a rural checkpoint near Damascus. Seven others were wounded in the incident, a day after gunmen assassinated a brigadier general near the capital.

Eight people were killed when a bomb hit a minibus on the Aleppo-Idlib road, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

In Homs, tank fire crashed into the Khalidiya district after a night rally against Assad there, activists said. YouTube footage showed a crowd dancing at the rally and waving the old Syrian flag used before the Baath Party seized power in 1963.

The British-based Observatory said eight people were killed in violence in Homs, a flashpoint city of one million racked by unrest, crackdowns and Sunni-Alawite sectarian killings.

Activists also reported fighting between rebels and troops trying to edge into Khalidiya, a neighborhood that is home to Sunni tribesmen and lies next to the Alawite district of Nozha.

Tanks were firing sporadically at the rebel-held town of Zabadani, near the Lebanese border, which has been under attack since Friday, activists said. They added that several soldiers who had tried to defect to the opposition had been killed.

Syrian forces shot dead a man at a roadblock in the restive Damascus suburb of Qatana, they said, and an activist was killed by sniper fire in the northwestern town of Khan Sheikhoun.

The United States, the European Union, Turkey and the Arab League have announced sanctions against Syria, but while these have hurt its economy, they have yet to prompt Assad to change course. Opposition to sanctions from some of Syria's trading partners, notably Lebanon and Iraq, also dilutes their impact.

Security Council members have been divided for months over the uprising against Assad, with Western countries pushing for strong condemnation of the government's bloody crackdown but Russia seeking to shield Damascus.

In October, Russia and China vetoed a European-drafted resolution that threatened possible sanctions. Russia presented its own draft on December 15 and Western countries agreed to discuss and negotiate it, but there has been little progress since then.

Gene Hackman Hit By Car, Airlifted to Hospital

Oscar winner Gene Hackman airlifted to the hospital Friday afternoon after he was hit by a car while riding his bike in the Florida Keys, his rep said.

Fortunately, the 81-year-old is alright and and on the mend.

"Gene was airlifted (because he is on an island) to the hospital for routine tests," the rep confirmed. "Everything is fine and Gene is on his way home now."

The actor suffered only "a few bumps and bruises."

(AP) ? Cheaper tablets, thinner laptops and an array of sleeker TVs stood out at this year's International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

More than 140,000 people gathered there this week, for an event that's growing despite the absence of Apple and more recently, the decision by Microsoft to make this the last year it participates.

A bevy of celebrities, including 50 Cent, Will.i.am, and Kelly Clarkson, stopped by to add glitz to the proceedings ?but they were hardly the stars of the show. Here are some of the more significant gadgets that shined at CES:

Cheaper tablets ? The industry's enthusiasm for tablets was considerably tempered this year compared to last, when more than a hundred manufacturers thought they could capitalize on the iPad's success with their own models based on Google Inc.' Android software. Sales were disappointing, in large part because Apple prices the iPad relatively low compared to the cost of making it. Then, late last year, Amazon.com Inc. demonstrated that you can take on Apple by selling a smaller, barebones tablet for $199. Analysts believe Amazon sold millions of Kindle Fires in little more than a month.

Now, Asian manufacturers are hoping to jump on Amazon's bandwagon. One of those companies, Taiwan's AsusTek Computer Inc., showed off a tablet with a Fire-sized screen and said it would sell it for $249. It's considerably more powerful than the Fire, sporting a premium "quadcore" processor. Still, one of the things that made the Fire a success ? Amazon's library of e-books, music and movies ? will be missing.

Nokia Lumia 900 ? In recent years, the world's largest phone maker, Finland's Nokia Corp., has practically been a no-show in the U.S. market. That's hurt the company badly. Now, it hopes to come back with smartphones that run Microsoft Corp.'s Windows Phone software. The Lumia 900 is its first such phone for the AT&T network, and the first Nokia phone to use AT&T's faster wireless "LTE" network. In a sign of how much is riding on these phones, both the Microsoft and Nokia CEOs showed up for Monday's announcement. The companies didn't announce price or availability. T-Mobile USA, a smaller carrier, started selling a more modest Lumia this week.

Lenovo K800 ? While Nokia's been shut out of the U.S. phone market, Intel Corp., the world's largest chipmaker, has been shut out of phones entirely. Its PC chips use too much power to go into a smartphone: they'd drain the battery in no time. That's a big problem for the company, since PC sales are flat in the developed world, while smartphone sales are exploding. Now, Intel says a new line of chips is ready for smartphone use, and Lenovo Corp. of China is the first to take them up on it, with a smartphone to be sold in China in the second quarter. Outwardly, it's indistinguishable from any other touchscreen phone, and it runs Android.

Motorola Mobility, the phone maker that's being bought by Google, also committed to making phones and other devices with Intel chips. Without offering many details, the company said the new devices will be on the market in the second half of the year.

OLED TVs ? Both LG and Samsung showed off 55-inch TVs with screens made from organic light-emitting diodes rather than the standard liquid crystals or plasma cells, and said they'll on sale this year. They didn't say what they would cost, but analysts expect the price to be upwards of $5,000.

The sets are long-awaited. OLED TVs have been on the horizon for some time, but they're difficult to manufacture in large sizes. They provide a high-contrast picture with highly saturated colors. They can also be very thin: LG's set is just 4 millimeters thick, or one-sixth of an inch.

Ultrabooks ? Intel created the "ultrabook" as a marketing term for thin, light and powerful laptop computers. They're essentially the Windows versions of Apple's MacBook Air. PC makers have embraced the term enthusiastically. As a result, there were scores of ultrabook models on display at the show.

Two that stood out were the Lenovo Yoga, which has a touch-sensitive screen that bends backward to fold over completely, turning the device into a large tablet. It will launch with the new Windows 8 operating system later this year. The HP Envy 14 is a more conventional luxury model, and goes on sale Feb. 8, but has two details that set it apart: a sensor for Near-Field Communications Chips (which means you can transfer information from a similarly equipped phone by tapping it to the PC) and an audio chip that can communicate with some headphones to provide much better audio quality than Bluetooth. The Envy 14 will cost $1,400.

Bob O'Donnell, an analyst with research firm IDC, believes ultrabooks are "not a fad." ''We absolutely see ultrabooks as being the future of notebooks," he said. However, O'Donnell thinks ultrabooks will really take off once they are priced at about $800, closer to the price of regular laptops.

Canon G1 X ? The Japanese camera maker revealed a compact camera that pushes into professional camera territory. Its G line of relatively large compact cameras has been popular among enthusiasts, and the G1 X extends the range by including an image sensor that's more than six times larger than other models in the range. Sensor size is the most important factor for a camera's image quality, far more than the number of megapixels ? 14, for the G1 X. It's the first camera to use a sensor of this type, which is only 20 percent smaller than the "APS-C" sensors used in single-lens reflex cameras, or SLRs (though some luxury compacts from other manufacturers use APS-C sensors).

The G1 X will have a 4x zoom lens that retracts into the metal body, and will sell for $800.
