UFC 144 recap: Benson Henderson leaves Japan as the new UFC Lightweight Champion
The odds for UFC 144?s main event had Frankie Edgar as the slight favorite, but that may have been a bit of a sentimental pick, because on paper it looked like Benson Henderson was the better fighter. However after betting against Edgar for so long and coming up wrong it looked like he had finally convinced many that he was the real deal.
That?s not to say that Edgar is not the real deal, it was just that tonight Edgar?s ?heart of a champion? just wasn?t enough to overcome the skill, strength and shear size of Benson Henderson, who became the new UFC Lightweight Champion in Japan.
Questions after seeing Frankie Edgar vs. Benson Henderson:
-What?s next?? This is a difficult question. Does Frankie Edgar deserve a rematch? Yes, he probably does. Does Anthony Pettis deserve a shot at Benson Henderson?s crown? Yes, he probably does.? Should Edgar drop to Featherweight and challenge Jose Aldo for that title? Again, this is something that is not out of the question. The fighters and the UFC management team have a lot to ponder after this one, but the reality is no matter what decision they make to the above questions, the fans will be the winners.
-Was the fight scored correctly? As soon as any big name fight ends in a decision there are many that question if the scoring was correct. This fight was no different. I don?t know if you?ll find many that think that Frankie Edgar was robbed of a win, but you will probably find some that thought the scoring was closer than what was announced.?
Questions Following UFC 144:
-Will there be a better card during 2012?? Selfishly I really hope there is a better card, but the reality is that this one will be hard to top. The first fight of the night was an amazing 32-second KO and it never really let up for the entire evening.? Add to that fact that the UFC seemed moving things along like they had rented the arena by the minute and their was hardly any let up, it was fight after fight after fight. It was an incredible card and one that should go a long way toward establishing the UFC as a legitimate force in Japan.
-What?s next for Tim Boetsch? Boetsch showed every fighter that ever found themselves down two rounds to none, what can be accomplished with a solid chin, strong punching and a little touch of crazy. Boetsch was down when the third round began, but he threw caution to the wind and did what more fighters should do when backed into the corner, he fought his way out with abandon and KO?d Yushin Okami.? He may not be title shot material at 185 but he sure looks like he could play spoiler.
-Can we finally stop harping on the Showtime kick? Was the kick that Anthony Pettis delivered in his WEC title bout against Benson Henderson memorable? Yes it was, but Pettis was and is more than that kick and he showed that at UFC 144 when he stopped Joe Lauzon with a perfectly placed head kick at 1:21 of Round One.
-Is Mark Hunt the most powerful striker in the Heavyweight division? That question is debatable, but there is a way to end that debate, put him in the Octagon against another heavy-handed heavyweight.?

?Finish of the Night: Anthony Pettis: He put his shin right onto the jaw off Joe Lauzon and dropped him to his back. The punches that he threw after that were not needed as there was no way Lauzon was getting up. The Showtime kick, forget about that one, remember this one.

Computers can reserve your plane ticket, your hotel room and your restaurant table. Why not your place at an intersection?
The concept is simple: a computer in a car calls ahead to the nearest intersection it is headed toward, and says it will arrive at a given time. The intersection checks to see if anyone else is arriving then, and if the slot is open, it tells the car to proceed. If it isn't, it tells the car that and the car is responsible for slowing down or stopping.
That's the idea Peter Stone, an associate professor of computer science at the University of Texas at Austin, is presenting at the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Rather than trying to keep track of all the cars on the road, all the intersection's computer does is say whether there is a space for the next vehicle, given a list of time slots.
"It's a bit like reserving at a hotel room," Stone said. "When you call a hotel and say you are arriving Friday, they check to see if there is a room. They don't call up everyone else at the hotel and ask them to change their travel plans."
If there is no room, the traveler changes the arrival date or finds another hotel. The intersection would work in a similar fashion.
Cars are becoming more sophisticated, and there is already a lot of work being done networking cars (including at least one concept model from Ford ). Integrating them with the traffic signals isn't a large step, and that could boost the efficiency of traffic, as well as safety.
The Department of Transportation reported that in 2009 there were 5.5 million car crashes and 2.2 million were at either an intersection or "intersection related." Of those accidents, 699,000 resulted in injuries, and 6,770 resulted in deaths.

Part of the reason intersections are dangerous ? in some cases more so than highways ? is because the vehicles are going in different directions, so sideswipes are more common. When cars collide, a thin door is much less protection than an engine block. But the other major factor is human behavior.
Green lights are designed to operate in waves that allow cars traveling at a set speed to travel freely for some distance, but few ever keep to that speed ? one person is going faster and another slower, and it isn't long before the smooth flow of traffic is a mess.
Stone wanted to solve some of that and keep the computing complexity to a minimum. One could, Stone said, link the intersections as well, so that along certain routes they could coordinate traffic flow. (If such an intersection's computer were to fail it would be no different than when traffic lights go out).
Others in the field are working on similar problems. Philip Tanoff, who recently retired as director of the Center for Advanced Transportation Technology at the University of Maryland, is skeptical that such a system could work with only a few cars equipped to signal the traffic intersection.
"It seems that it would work only under optimal conditions," he said. Though the onus of adjusting speeds and arrival times (or stopping) is on the cars, the question, he says, is whether they could account for many other factors on the road ? pedestrian traffic, for instance, crossing at a crosswalk.
Stone said his technology can work with even just a few vehicles linked to the intersections, since the car can still take into account what the (unconnected) ones around it are doing.
"The benefits are less when there are human drivers," he said. "But it is still safer."
Stone is also researching methods of dynamically changing the number of lanes in each direction on major roads to respond to traffic flows.

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) ? Thought bird flu was gone? Recent human deaths in Asia and Egypt are a reminder that the H5N1 virus is still alive and dangerous, and Vietnam is grappling with a new strain that has outsmarted vaccines used to protect poultry flocks.
Ten people have died in Cambodia, Indonesia, Egypt, China and Vietnam since December during the prime-time flu season when the virus typically flares in poultry.
"We are worried, and we will be very cautious," said To Long Thanh, director of Vietnam's Center for Animal Health Diagnostics in Vietnam.
The H5N1 virus has killed 345 people worldwide since 2003, when it rampaged across large swaths of Asia decimating poultry stocks before later surfacing in parts of Africa, the Middle East and Europe. The number of poultry outbreaks has greatly diminished since then, but the virus remains entrenched in several countries and continues to surface sporadically, resulting in 20 to 30 human deaths globally in recent years.
Bird flu remains hard for people to catch, with most people sickened after being in close contact with infected poultry, but experts have long feared it could spark a pandemic if it mutates into a form that spreads easily among people.
The fresh wave of cases comes amid a controversy involving scientists who created new lab-only versions of the virus that spread more easily among animals, hoping to better understand it. After a loud uproar over whether publishing the research would put the recipe for a bioweapon into the hands of terrorists, the researchers have agreed to temporarily halt their work.
They are set to wrap up a two-day meeting on the issue Friday with international experts at the World Health Organization in Geneva.
Vietnam has long struggled to control the virus, but it has made progress ? going 21 months before reporting its two most recent deaths in the past month. It has also experienced a burst of poultry outbreaks in 11 provinces nationwide over the same period. Officials have issued fresh warnings for farmers to beef up surveillance, especially since they can no longer rely on the latest poultry vaccine in the north and central aress where it is weak or useless against a new strain that has emerged in the region.
"We have to increase biosecurity," said Thanh, the animal diagnostics director.
The new strain had earlier been identified in China and was also recently found in Bangladesh and Nepal, where it likely spread via wild birds, said Jan Slingenbergh, a senior animal health officer at the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome.
Viruses are constantly mutating and require new vaccines to protect against infection ? the same reason new human seasonal flu shots are developed each year. A new vaccine is in the works, and scientists have stressed that the new strain has not changed in any way that suggests the virus is becoming more dangerous.
The U.N. agriculture agency warned of a possible resurgence in bird flu outbreaks after the new strain was identified, potentially increasing risk to humans. However, Vietnam's two recent deaths occurred in the southern Mekong Delta, where the vaccine remains effective. WHO stressed it is also normal to see a spike in cases and poultry outbreaks during this time of year.
"WHO has always said that as long as the virus is entrenched in poultry, which it is, there continues to be the risk of bird-to-human transmission," spokesman Gregory Hartl said in Geneva. "That risk means that you cannot predict exactly if the transmission will happen and if it will be regular, but there is the risk so that's why it's not surprising to see cases."
Vietnam buys most of its poultry vaccine from China, which has continued with its robust vaccination campaign of some 15 billion doses despite the emergence of the new strain. Researchers there have developed a new version that works against the strain, but it's unclear when it might be ready for distribution, said Keith Hamilton, an animal influenza expert at the Paris-based World Organization of Animal Health.
"We emphasize that vaccination is a complementary tool," he said. "It has to be used in conjunction with other control measures ? biosecurity on farms, early detection is essential, so is a rapid response to contain and eliminate sources of disease."
But in Ha Nam province, on the outskirts of Vietnam's capital, Hanoi, animal health officials are desperate to contain a poultry outbreak that hit last week. They have ordered 1 million doses of vaccine, hoping it will provide at least some protection.
"I wish to have an effective vaccine against bird flu as soon as possible, so I can go on raising ducks," said farmer Nguyen Van Duong, whose entire flock was slaughtered after the virus was detected.
"I am devastated at losing my investment on the ducks, but we will do anything to work with the authorities to stop it from spreading. The last thing we want is an outbreak to happen again."

A frequent grant recipient, Ms. Morrison embodies the spirit of Burbank Arts for All Foundation by continuing to give back to students in Burbank schools through arts education.
Champion of the Arts Award: Barbara Miller
This award is presented to an individual or organization whose volunteer commitment to providing equitable access to the arts has made a significant impact on the students of Burbank Unified School District and the Burbank community.
Honored for her tireless dedication to the advancement of the arts in the Burbank community, Burbank PTA Council President, Barbara Miller, will receive the Champion of the Arts Award. She is an invaluable resource and works with the California State PTA to follow legislative and budget changes regarding all areas of education and in particular the arts. This dedicated mother of three also serves on the BUSD Facilities Oversight Committee, the Superintendent?s Finance Advisory Committee and the Burbank Arts for All Summer School Advisory Committee. Her dedication bridges the mission of Burbank Arts For All Foundation and the PTA and she was instrumental in both organizations becoming Allied Agencies. Through Mrs. Miller?s on-going commitment to arts education as well as her untiring volunteerism efforts, she continues to be an extraordinary advocate for Burbank Arts for All Foundation.

GPS Interferences Update: FCC Bars LightSquared From Using ...
Nothing surprising since this outcome was expected, Slashdot runs a story named?FCC Bars LightSquared From Using Airwaves.
Their summary: "A proposed wireless broadband network that would provide voice and Internet service using airwaves once reserved for satellite-telephone transmissions?should be shelved because it interferes with GPS technology,?the Federal Communications Commission?said Tuesday. The news appears to?squash the near-term hopes for the network?pushed by LightSquared, a Virginia company that is majority-owned by Philip Falcone, a New York hedge fund manager.?LightSquared, naturally, continues to?deny that the interference is real."
This seems to be the end of the LightSquared debacle which started over a year ago.
