The DIY wizards of San Quentin

Even incarceration can't lock up the spirit of human ingenuity. When tech blog Gizmodo visited San Quentin, they found that what inmates do with extremely limited resources is incredible.

Prison Hacks are the big house's answer to Gizmodo's homemod. Prison is designed to be uncomfortable ? it's prison, after all. But even incarceration can't lock up the spirit of human ingenuity. As you can see in the video above, what prisoners do with extremely limited resources is incredible.

Problem #1
The chow hall undercooked the chicken. Again. Rare beef is wonderful, but rare chicken is like chewing on soggy boots. You don't have a stove in your cell, so what are you going to do?

If you're like Marvin Caldwell, you'll wrap up your undercooked bird in some foil, take it back to your cell and you'll make an "oven" out of toilet paper. That's right: toilet paper.

The TP is rolled into a cylinder, folded in at the ends, and lit so it burns from the inside out. That slows it down and intensifies the heat. Inmates hold their undercooked meal above the flame, and voila, you can get it as hot and crispy as you like.

Problem #2
Inmates can?only get special TVs that have no speakers. They can listen on their headphones, but then it's hard to hear announcements over the intercom. When you're in prison, if you're called for and you don't show up, you are in very, very deep guano. What to do?

Shahid, who is an assistant to San Quentin's Muslim cleric, talked to a buddy who knew a bit about wiring. He managed to hack into Shahid's speakerless TV and splice the audio over to his radio. Now he can listen quietly and not miss announcements. Hopefully his cellie shares his taste in local programming.

Problem #3
Sometimes warm water just ain't good enough. Inmates are allowed to have hotpots, which heat the water, but only to a certain, pre-boiling temperature. Sure, that restriction is in place to keep inmates from using water as a weapon, but there's nothing like tepid soup to spur innovation.

Ladies and gentlemen, The Stinger. I'll let Marvin Caldwell show you how it works, but I will say that it's amazing what a little scrap-metal and some basic wiring can do. I thought for sure it would melt the plastic cup, but Marvin assured me it's not an issue. (P.S. Please don't try this at home.)

Lockdown is Gizmodo's special report on the technology inside prisons, from weapons to hacks, contraband to cooking, and everything in between. They're bringing it to you directly from San Quentin State Prison in California.?

Peru reopens probe of forced sterilizations

(AP) ? Peruvian prosecutors have reopened an investigation into evidence that thousands of women were forcibly sterilized during the 1990-2000 government of Alberto Fujimori, a practice rights groups say was official state policy and constituted a crime against humanity.

Rights groups say they have proof more than 2,000 Peruvian women were forcibly sterilized under Fujimori. But they believe the number is closer to 200,000. Most of the victims lived in rural areas, were poor and barely educated or illiterate.

The goal was to reduce poverty by lowering the birth rate among the poor, who at the time accounted for one in two Peruvians, the groups say.

"It was a premeditated development policy because it was done fundamentally, in areas of extreme poverty, rural and Andean," said Francisco Soberon, executive director of APRODEH, Peru's leading human rights organization.

It was also racist because it chiefly targeted indigenous Quechua speakers, Soberon said.

Alejandra Cardenas of the New York-based Center for Reproductive Rights said that not since Nazi Germany has a government employed forced sterilization an instrument of state policy.

Officials in the Fujimori administration have denied that women were forced to undergo sterilization and said they signed consent forms. But activists say the women were deceived or threatened.

All related investigations were shelved in 2009, but President Ollanta Humala revived the sterilization cases as a campaign issue before defeating Fujimori's daughter Keiko in a June runoff election for the presidency.

On Wednesday, a senior official from the Peruvian attorney general's office informed the InterAmerican Commission on Human Rights in Washington that the chief prosecutor's office, a separate agency, had decided on Oct. 21 to revive the cases.

"It was a surprise," said Cardenas, who was at the meeting. "It was pretty amazing."

The prosecutor who will oversee the case, Victor Cubas, said through a spokesman that he was too busy Friday to answer questions about the investigation.

Cardenas said the Peruvian representative told activists on Wednesday that the government was looking into assuring it would have the necessary resources to reopen all the cases.

"We know that we will have to keep putting on pressure," she said.

The formal resolution by the prosecutor's office on reopening the investigation found merit in the conclusion by the InterAmerican Commission on Human Rights that a case it took up indicated crimes against humanity might have been committed.

That could potentially mean another criminal case against Alberto Fujimori, who is already serving a 25-year prison sentence for corruption and human rights abuses related to death squad killings.

In 1999, a year before Fujimori fled into exile amid a corruption scandal, his government reported that 300,000 women had undergone sterilization in the previous five years as part of a birth control program.

Rights activists say they believe Fujimori personally ordered the coercive sterilizations, and three consecutive health ministers carried it out.

One of them, Alejandro Aguinaga, claimed at the time that "all the patients signed consent forms in order to submit to the operation."

Aguinaga was an adviser during this year's presidential campaign to Keiko Fujimori, who when asked about the sterilizations by Humala during a debate responded that the cases had been closed.

The case championed by the InterAmerican Commission on Human Rights involved Mamerita Mestanza, a 33-year-old mother of seven who died in 1996 after being pressured into tubal ligation surgery.

"Mestanza was told that a law had been passed and that she and her husband were going to be fined or imprisoned because they had (more than) five kids already," said Cardenas of the Center for Reproductive Rights.

Mestanza was thus coerced into signing a consent form, submitted to the surgery, returned to the clinic where the operation was performed complaining of internal bleeding and died a few days later, Cardenas added.

In a 2003 settlement with the rights commission, Peru agreed to pay Mestanza's survivors more than $100,000, provide her children with free education and other benefits.

Six years later, the investigation died when the chief prosecutor's office ruled that neither the Mestanza case nor 2,063 others registered of forced sterilization constituted a severe violation of human rights and thus should be shelved under the statute of limitations.

Deflation risks rising: Nightmare scenario

Deflation: If forecasts are correct, several factors could present a dangerous combination the Fed might not allow to brew for very long.

Risks are rising that a moribund job market and potentially steep drop in inflation could push the United States into a downward spiral of falling wages and prices.

That nightmare scenario of deflation might seem remote considering a recent rebound in growth, and the U.S. Federal Reserve would almost certainly try to head it off, probably well before prices started to fall.

But some investors and economists say the risk is real.

Inflation is expected to more than halve over the next year as a spike in prices for goods like oil and grains unwinds. Unemployment, meanwhile, will likely hold at nearly double its pre-recession level well into next year, keeping incomes under pressure.

If forecasts are correct, that could present a dangerous combination the Fed might not allow to brew for very long.

``You run the models and that all points to deflation,'' said Joshua Dennerlein, an economist at Bank of America Merrill Lynch in New York. ``Without some kind of monetary policy help you would definitely get deflation.''

Already, many forecasts for price increases are lower than they were a year ago when the Fedannounced it would pump $600 billion into the banking system to boost growth and counter fears ofdeflation, which were growing at the time.

The inflation rate, which hit a three-year high of 3.9 percent in September, could fall to 1.3 percent by October 2012, according to a measure of expectations calculated by the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland.

That would leave the rate below the U.S. central bank's 1.7 percent to 2 percent comfort zone.

FOUNDATION FOR ACTION

With this year's inflation surge as a backdrop, the Fed is not expected to make any move at its policy meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday.

But looking to mid-2012, when the central bank's current stimulus program known as ``Operation Twist'' is due to expire, a high jobless rate and slowing inflation could look worrisome, especially if inflation expectations decline further.

``That would provide more of a foundation for action both to try to reduce the probability of slipping intodeflation and to try to provide some more support for economic growth,'' said Randall Kroszner, an economist at the University of Chicago who served on the Fed's board until 2009.

When Kroszner was a policymaker, deflation fears were perhaps their highest since the Great Depression, the last time U.S. prices and incomes sank in a vicious, self-feeding cycle.

To counter inflation, central banks can always raise interest rates. But the Fed's normal tool kit for countering falling prices is limited since it has already cut short-term borrowing costs nearly to zero.

The key would be to find a way to ensure a deflationary psychology does not take hold. If consumers and businesses put off purchases because they could be cheaper down the road, that could undercut the economy and push prices down further.

While growth likely accelerated to around a 2.5 percent annual pace in the third quarter, nearly double the second-quarter rate, several Fed officials have continued to talk about steps they could take to spur a stronger recovery.

Some of the third quarter's relative strength reflects a one-time bounceback from shocks caused by a spike in oil prices and an earthquake in Japan that disrupted manufacturing.

And dark clouds remain. Economists say a worsening of Europe's debt crisis could easily send theUnited States back into recession, further increasing deflation risks.

MONEY PRINTING

Already, nearly one fifth of Americans believe their family incomes will fall during the next six months, the highest level of wage pessimism since October 2009, according to data released on Tuesday by the Conference Board.

At the same time, consumer expectations for long-term inflation, as measured by a Thomson-Reuters/University of Michigan survey, fell this month to the lowest level since the Fed was readying a $600 billion bond-buying plan a year ago.

Growth in wages has slowed markedly since the recession and they could eventually start falling if the unemployment rate remains high, said Paul Ashworth, and economist at Capital Economics in Toronto. A Reuters poll of economists expects the jobless rate to edge down to just 9 percent in the second quarter of 2012 from 9.1 percent now.

Some analysts think the Fed's extraordinary actions to help the economy -- it has already pumped $2.3 trillion into the banking system -- make it nearly impossible for a sustained deflation to take hold.

While much of that money has not seeped into the wider economy because of weak demand and tighter lending standards, eventually it will, greasing the gears of growth and fueling inflation, saidRichard Burdekin, an economist at Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, California.

``There is a legitimate concern about deflation,'' he said. ''But to have a deflation when you have the sort of money growth we're seeing would be unprecedented.''

Yet investors who believe most ardently that deflation is coming see evidence in the declines in the values of a number of asset classes. U.S. housing prices have fallen about a third since their pre-recession peak, while the Standard & Poor's stock index is down about a fifth. The Reuters-Jefferies CRB commodities index has also dropped about a third since its 2008 peak, and nearly 15 percent since April of this year.

``When you have deflation in all these other areas, it's kind of difficult to see how goods and services are going to resist the trend,'' said Gary Shilling, who formerly worked on the staff of the San Francisco Fed and as an economist at several Wall Street firms.

Injured vet spent day at work, nights at protest (AP)

OAKLAND, Calif. ? The Iraq War veteran injured during a clash between police and anti-Wall Street protesters this week wasn't taking part in the demonstrations out of economic need.

The 24-year-old Scott Olsen makes a good living as a network engineer and has a nice apartment overlooking San Francisco Bay. And yet, his friends say, he felt so strongly about economic inequality in the United States that he fought for overseas that he slept at a protest camp after work.

"He felt you shouldn't wait until something is affecting you to get out and do something about it," said friend and roommate Keith Shannon, who served with Olsen in Iraq.

It was that feeling that drew him to Oakland on Tuesday night, when the clashes broke out and Olsen's skull was fractured. Fellow veterans said Olsen was struck in the head by a projectile fired by police, although the exact object and who might have been responsible for the injury have not been definitively established.

Now, even as officials investigate exactly where the projectile came from, Olsen has become a rallying cry for the Occupy Wall Street demonstrators across the nation, with Twitter users and protest websites declaring, "We are all Scott Olsen."

In Las Vegas, a few dozen protesters held a vigil for him. A handful of police officers attended, and protesters invited them back for a potluck dinner Thursday night.

"We renewed our vow of nonviolence," organizer Sebring Frehner said.

Another round of vigils were organized for Thursday night, including one in Oakland, where a crowd of at least 1,000 people gathered, many holding candles.

Elsewhere across the United States, officials took steps to close some of the protest camps that have sprung up in opposition to growing economic inequality.

In Nashville, Tenn., officials imposed a curfew, saying conditions at a camp at the state Capitol were worsening. In Providence, R.I., officials told protesters they were violating multiple city laws by camping overnight at a park.

The group Iraq Veterans Against the War blamed police for Olsen's injury. Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan said officials will investigate whether officers used excessive force. He did not return calls seeking comment Thursday.

Police have said they responded with tear gas and bean bag rounds only when protesters began throwing bottles and other items at them.

Olsen's condition improved Thursday, with doctors transferring him from the emergency room to an intensive care unit and upgrading his condition to fair.

Dr. Alden Harken, chief surgeon at Alameda County Medical Center, said Olsen was still unable to speak but had improved dramatically since he was hospitalized unconscious with a fractured skull and bruised brain that caused seizures.

By Thursday afternoon, Harken said, Olsen was interacting with his parents, who flew in from Wisconsin in the morning, doing math equations and otherwise showing signs of "high-level cognitive functioning." The doctor said he may require surgery, but that's unlikely.

"He's got a relatively small area of injury and he's got his youth going for him. So both of those are very favorable," Harken said.

Olsen smiled when Mayor Jean Quan stopped by to visit and expressed surprise at all the attention his injury has generated, hospital spokesman Vintage Foster said. The mayor apologized and promised an investigation, according to Foster.

His uncle in Wisconsin told The Associated Press that Olsen's mother was trying to understand what had happened.

"This is obviously a heartbreaker to her," George Nygaard said. "I don't think she understands why he was doing this."

On Tuesday night, Olsen had planned to be at the San Francisco protest, but he changed course after his veterans' group decided to support protesters in Oakland after police cleared an encampment outside City Hall.

"I think it was a last-minute thing," Shannon said.

Joshua Shepherd, 27, a Navy veteran who was standing nearby when Olsen got struck, said he didn't know what hit him. "It was like a war zone," he said.

A video posted on YouTube showed Olsen being carried by other protesters through the tear gas, his face bloodied. People shout at him: "What's your name? What's your name?" Olsen just stares back.

Shepherd said it's a cruel irony that Olsen is fighting an injury in the country that he fought to protect.

People at OPSWAT, the San Francisco security software company where Olsen works, were devastated after learning of his injuries. They described him as a humble, quiet man.

Olsen had been helping to develop security applications for U.S. defense agencies, building on expertise gained while on active duty in Iraq, said Jeff Garon, the company's director of marketing.

Olsen was awarded seven medals while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, which he left as a lance corporal in November 2009 after serving for four years. One of them was the Navy-Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

Olsen moved to the Bay Area in July, and quickly found friends in the veterans against the war group.

His tours of duty in Iraq made him more serious, Shannon said.

"He wasn't active in politics before he went in the military, but he became active once he was out ... the experience in the military definitely shaped him," Shannon said.

How to Stop Caring About Trolls and Get On With Your Life [Trolls]

How to Stop Caring About Trolls and Get On With Your LifeYou see them everywhere you go on the internet: anonymous users with nothing to say but rude, off-topic, or annoying comments aimed at making you angry. The only cure is to just stop caring, and while that's easier said than done, these tips should help you overcome their spell.

The word "trolling" actually comes from a fishing technique in which one casts out bait to catch fish?and that's exactly what internet trolls do. They use rude statements and other techniques to try to "lure" you into getting angry or responding. Their only goal is to get you angry?just like your sibling used to do when they'd poke you or repeat everything you said. Often, they latch onto powerful individuals, in order to feel more powerful themselves.

Trolling on the internet started on Usenet newsgroups back in the day, but now you see them everywhere?internet forums, blogs, YouTube, and even Twitter. The problem is now that in today's day and age, all of us are subject to trolling?not just those powerful enough to have their own blogs. This means that ignoring them becomes a lot more difficult, since you're far more emotionally invested in the things you do and say, and the trolls have that many more mediums to attack you. Here are a few key things that will help build up your thick skin and help you stop caring about what pesky bridge-dwellers are saying on the internet. Photo remixed from an original by Peter Bernik .

Don't Feed the Trolls

How to Stop Caring About Trolls and Get On With Your LifeYou've probably heard this phrase numerous times before. It's the cardinal rule of being in an internet community, and with good reason. Avoidance is and has always been the best course of action, hands down. The majority of trolls thrive on the confrontation?after all, they're singular goal is to get attention?so the more you ignore them, the better. Downvote their comments or block them if you're on a forum that supports such features, and move on. It's incredibly tempting, but try to ignore them the best you can. Don't respond to them, not even to call them out as a troll, and they'll go away. Even a simple comment like "please stop" or "go away, troll" can bring attention to their comments (either by lengthening the thread or, in some forums, actually causing that thread to move higher in the chain). If a troll returns to their computer with zero replies, however, or if their comment just floats to the bottom of the thread, they'll go looking somewhere else for the attention they crave. Showing them that you can be baited, even a little bit, is just asking for more. Image by xkcd.

They're Attacking Boredom, Not You

One of the easiest ways to spot a troll is their completely lack of reason. Trolls will lash out and be purposely offensive to draw you in, rather than actually saying something of value. In their statements, you'll see a very "I'm right and everyone else here is wrong" attitude. Chris Shiflett over at Swiss Miss put it best:

The lesson I've learned is to be wary of those who [take pride in disliking things]. The ones who seem to think that being critical is the same as having good taste. Those people almost never have good taste, so their opinions don't matter.

So, even if what you've done isn't so great, just remember that those who can't say so with grace, those who seem to take pride in criticizing you, their opinions don't matter. It may very well be that you've created a masterpiece, and they're just children.

He says it doesn't take any sophistication to be a graceless critic, and he's dead on?if there isn't anything of value in their statement, then you shouldn't be putting any weight on it. Don't let the haters affect you; they're hating because they're bored, not because you've necessarily done anything poorly.

They're Not Worth the Energy

How to Stop Caring About Trolls and Get On With Your LifeIn the end, do you really need to waste your energy worrying about what one or two sad, bored people are saying about you? No. Blogger Scott Stratten explains the concept of "emotional currency" and how it relates to dealing with trolls:

In a nutshell, you only have so much emotion to go around. It should be spent on people who value it, who value you, not some douchenozzle that just finished a 36-hour bender on World of Warcraft and is pissed his wizard lost an epic battle on the island of Corinthian. There are way too many incredible people in this world, and Twitter especially that are worth your time.

Just because the internet has a lot of psychos doesn't mean it isn't full of awesome people, and time spent arguing with trolls is time that could have been spent having meaningful discussions with others. Furthermore, he says, time spent worrying about what trolls thing is time you could have spent on the people that actually matter. Do you really want to drain your energy on something that isn't worthwhile?

Learn to Laugh at the Situation

A positive attitude can get you through anything, and while you can keep yourself from responding to a troll, it's nearly impossible to ignore them altogether?even if you take steps to de-troll your internet. The best defense for keeping your sanity intact is to just have a sense of humor about it. It may seem insensitive to say "just grow a thicker skin", but like it or not, it's very effective. Susannah Breslin, contributor over at Forbes, once said if you "get hit over the head enough times, your head goes numb". It's absolutely true. Just remember that if you're getting trolled more often, it's probably because they see you in a position of power, which means you're doing something right.

How to Respond When You Get Locked In

While I highly recommend avoiding the trolls at all costs, if you accidentally get yourself lured into a discussion, you can either try avoiding, or attempt to fizzle out the argument yourself. We've talked about using "cognitive therapy" once before: if you kill them with kindness, you'll thwart their plans much easier. Software developer Shlomi Fish explains, using the example of a troll that bashes specific programming languages in a forum thread:

It's very simple:

  1. Ask him what he means. ; interrogate him:
    • "Why do you feel that Python is so bad? What do you find wrong with it?"
  2. Agree with him (but use a softer language):
    • "Yes, Perl is a nice language, and I agree that Python has its downsides and/or trade-offs in comparison to Perl."
    • "It's OK to prefer Perl, we'll still accept you here."

This will make the troll lose steam and help you find a common ground.

Some may disagree with this method?I personally think it's better to just ignore and move on?but if you do get caught responding and can't just turn back, you can change your tune and try to kill them with kindness. It could be a way out.

Learn to Separate Constructive Criticism from Trolling

Lastly, it's worth mentioning that, as I've said before, there are some cases in which someone may be rude or put you down, but they're just tactless. If you can extract any constructive criticism or valid arguments out of someone?even if it means sending them an automated response telling them to be nicer?it can be worth your while. Being mean isn't the same as being a troll, and sometimes it's okay to give someone the benefit of the doubt before ignoring them altogether.

It takes a bit of practice and conditioning, but the main goal is to just stop giving a crap about what other people think?especially those that have nothing useful to offer. Got any of your own tips for dealing with trolls, either on the internet or in real life? Sound off in the comments.

Olly: the web-connected robot that converts pings to odors

What if there were a way to add smells to the things you see every single day on the internet? To some, just the thought of that there scenario would induce nausea. To others -- primarily those who spend their days Googling various rose gardens around the globe -- it just might be the extra dimension to surfing that they've been waiting for. If you happen to find yourself tucked into that second camp, we'd like to introduce you to Olly, the web-connected robot that's capable of emitting smells based on inputs from the 'net. The critter was dreamed up by Tim Pryde and the folks surrounding the Don-8r, and while there's currently no way to purchase one, instructions are forthcoming to produce your own with a 3D printer. In fact, it's recommended that users build a few, stack 'em up and connect different inputs (Twitter, Instagram, your mum's vegetarian cooking blog) to each one. It's the perfect cacophony... or the perfect disaster, depending on your browsing habits.

[Thanks, Tim]

Shots fired at officer in S.C., schools locked down (Reuters)

CHARLESTON, South Carolina (Reuters) ? As many as seven schools in Greenville, South Carolina were in lockdown and area residents were warned to stay inside after a suspect fired at a police officer on Friday and fled the scene, officials said.

A female police officer returned fire after being shot at by the suspect in the breezeway of an apartment building, said Greenville police spokeswoman Officer Alia Urps.

The officer was not injured.

At least one area school was in lockdown and three others were on partial lockdown following the incident, school officials said. Greenville Police Chief Terri Wilfong said she believed seven schools were locked down in early afternoon.

Before the shooting incident, police had been pursuing the suspect because the silver Yukon SUV he was driving had plates that matched a different car.

That discrepancy had been noticed when police were checking an area where stolen cars were often left. The suspect had then driven the Yukon away from that area.

The driver would not stop the Yukon, Wilfong said, so an officer in pursuit put out a general description and another officer found the car in an apartment complex near a school.

When she walked onto an apartment breezeway, "that's when she was ambushed. A subject began shooting at her," Wilfong said.

Police were searching a wooded area behind the complex for the shooter, described as a black male between 30 and 35 years old, dressed in gray pants and a gray shirt with long hair pulled back in a ponytail, Wilfong said.

Dog survived gas chamber, up for adoption in NJ (AP)

ROCKAWAY, N.J. ? A stray beagle mix that cheated death in an Alabama dog pound's gas chamber is up for adoption in New Jersey.

Volunteers began looking for a new home for the dog known as Daniel after the animal walked out unscathed from the carbon monoxide administered by the Animal Control Department in Florence, Ala., on Oct. 3.

The nonprofit Eleventh Hour Rescue group arranged to have the dog flown to New Jersey, where it is awaiting adoption at its shelter in Rockaway.

Volunteer Roger Keyser told The Star-Ledger of Newark the dog "has got to have some destiny."

Phil Stevenson, a Florence city spokesman, said Friday that no one is sure why Daniel was the lone survivor.

"It may be that his breathing was shallow because of a cold or something. Or maybe God just had a better plan for this one," Stevenson said.

Stevenson said the gas chamber is a stainless-steel box that's roughly the size of a pickup truck bed. A computer-controlled pump slowly feeds carbon monoxide into the chamber once it's sealed, and an operator presses a button.

"It sort of rocks them to sleep slowly. It's like the cases you hear about where people are overcome by carbon monoxide in their home and just never wake up," he said.

A new operator placed the dog into the chamber with other animals and started the machine, Stevenson said, although it's unclear how many animals were in the chamber in all, or what species.

Three animals have survived the gas chamber in the last 12 years or so, and every effort is made to find new homes for any that do survive, Stevenson said.

Alabama lawmakers passed a law in June to ban the use of gas chambers effective Dec. 31. At the time, Florence was one of only two places in the state using the chambers.

Mythical snow-white N9 spotted at Nokia World

Is it possible to improve on something as minutely refined as the Nokia N9 simply by adding another color variant? Well, that depends on what color we?re talking about. Sure, we already have black, cyan, and magenta, but what we?ve been missing -- until now -- is white. Plain, simple, ethereal white. It happens to be one of the hardest hues for a manufacturer to pull off without making a handset look tacky, or making its surface susceptible to the general grubbiness of everyday life. But Nokia did a smart thing: it added a glossy coating that completely changes the look and feel of the device. Take a look for yourself in the gallery below. But bear in mind that the midnight blue disco lights at Nokia World didn't quite do it justice.

Marshall Fine: Director Jonathan Segal talks about cancer and ...

When you've got a main character who's pretending to have cancer - and whose father is actually dying of the disease - and your movie is at least partially a romantic comedy, well, let's just say that tone becomes a tricky thing.

But Jonathan Segal found a way to balance it out in his movie, Norman, which opened Oct. 21 in limited release.

"That balance was something I paid close attention to," he says. "I was careful to avoid melodrama. I wanted some things to be funny. Even in the face of tragedy, things can be funny. I think that's why a lot of people have a strong reaction to the film - because that's the reality of life. Something terrible goes on. But at the same time, you find things to laugh about in the midst of it."

Norman stars Dan Byrd (Cougar Town) as the title character, a high-school student suffering through more than normal coming-of-age dramas. His mother was killed in a car accident; his father (Richard Jenkins) has been diagnosed with stomach cancer. So Norman, who's never had much luck with girls, is contemplating suicide.

Then he meets a girl, Emily (Emily van Camp), who seems to like him. But, reeling from a terminal diagnosis for his father and hassled by a friend for his lack of reliability, Norman blurts out that the reason he's been unreliable: He - Norman - has cancer. Once that genie is out of the bottle, there's no putting it back.

"He doesn't say it to gain popularity - though he does get that," Segal says. "He's not trying to get over on his friends. Part of allowing himself to perpetuate that lie is about his urge to kill himself and lashing out at the shitty situation he finds himself in. He says it to get an upper hand on his friend. He sticks with it because he's struggling with his own thoughts of suicide."

Part of that self-proclaimed cancer diagnosis involves Norman shaving his head to convincingly play the part of the cancer patient, something Byrd does on camera.

"That was a big day," Segal says. "It was exciting - and a logistical challenge. That's a one-take moment; once we did it, we couldn't go back. And it's one of those quintessential things for an actor: gaining weight for a role, or shaving your head. Dan was nervous about it but it went pretty quickly. We had to prepare meticulously. It was an exciting day."

Norman is Segal's second film as a director; his first, The Last Run, came and went in 2004.

"I look at that film now and see all the things I would have done differently," he says. "It never quite became what it should have. There are 15-minute stretches that I like. But I'm harsh on my own work."

He knows that Norman could face a challenging commercial environment: "Dramas are a tough sell," he says. But the film has played 15 festivals in the past year and Segal hopes it takes him to another film.

"I'm interested in psychology and story-telling," he says. "The craft of filmmaking is a fusion of the two. Every time you approach a scene, you're trying to reverse-engineer an emotion: where do you put the camera, how do you want your actors to be, what do you want the audience to feel. It's like a Rubik's cube - there are so many different ways to approach it."

Perry wants flat tax with some popular deductions (AP)

GRAY COURT, S.C. ? Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry is rolling out an economic plan that includes a flat tax proposal, private retirement accounts for Social Security and a lower corporate tax rate.

The Texas governor on Tuesday was outlining a proposal he calls "Cut, Balance and Grow" that is aimed at creating jobs and fixing the struggling economy, voters' top concerns heading into the 2012 election. Perry's flat tax plan maintains popular deductions for families making less than $500,000 a year and also eliminates taxes on Social Security benefits.

Perry outlined his plan in a Wall Street Journal opinion piece early Tuesday and was set to speak later in the day.

The major policy rollout is a critical part of Perry's efforts to right a struggling campaign. It's an opportunity to demonstrate a heft and seriousness that wasn't on display during recent debates. And it sets Perry to the right of chief rival Mitt Romney, who wants to make less sweeping changes to the tax code.

The policy rollout comes as he prepares to start airing TV ads in Iowa and has hired a roster of experienced national campaign operatives to help him. Perry's chief adviser on the economic plan is former presidential candidate Steve Forbes, who proposed a 17 percent flat tax when he ran for president in 1996.

It's taken Perry about 2-1/2 months to put together an economic policy package, and he's had to attend the series of debates without his detailed proposal. Romney also has attacked him repeatedly for not having a plan. Romney released a 59-point jobs plan in early September, about three months after officially announcing his bid.

Perry's plan would make more dramatic changes than Romney's would. While Perry's plan includes the flat tax, Romney would lower rates on corporations and on savings and investment income for middle-class Americans.

Perry chose South Carolina, where he announced he was running for president, to unveil the plan. The first-in-the-South primary state is critical to his path to the nomination, though he has fallen in the polls here just as he has dropped nationally.

He also planned a news conference in the state capital, Columbia, and a fundraiser at the home of former South Carolina GOP chairman Katon Dawson, his top South Carolina adviser.

Column: Noisy neighbors blow roof off Old Trafford

By JOHN LEICESTER

AP Sports Columnist

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:59 p.m. ET Oct. 24, 2011

MANCHESTER, England (AP) - The Alex Ferguson era isn't over at Manchester United. Still, this did feel like the beginning of the end.

A 6-1 loss. Make that a 6-1 humiliation. To Manchester City, no less.

At Old Trafford.

Ouch.

A hammering this heavy and this rare called for the history books. Not since, wait for it, January 1926 had City inflicted such pain on its crosstown rival in the league at its home ground where so many teams go away empty-handed.

"I'm shattered, I can't believe it," said Ferguson, who wasn't even born the last time the Blues pulled this off. "There's a lot of embarrassment in that dressing room and quite rightly so."

So what does this mean, what's the bigger picture?

Well, despite the astounding scoreline, it doesn't mean English soccer's center of gravity has permanently shifted a few miles east to the blue side of Manchester. At least not yet. United still has the bigger global brand, the bigger global following and an Aladdin's cave full of trophies. City is not even close to taking all of that away.

Still, City looks increasingly likely to make the last few years of Ferguson's reign at United - he turns 70 in December, in his 25th year in charge - very uncomfortable indeed.

City says its aim is to become one of the best teams in Europe. As far as statements of intent go, beating the Premier League champion at home so comprehensively was the soccer equivalent of planting a flag on Everest.

The hundreds of millions of dollars that an Abu Dhabi billionaire has thrown at City in the three years since he bought the No. 2 club in Manchester have turned a weakling into a muscle-bound force that can now call itself United's equal on the field. Financial doping clearly works.

Sheik Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan generally doesn't attend City's matches but his deep pockets are working wonders. The Glazer family, which owns United, was at Sunday's game but has loaded the club with debt. Is that one of the big differences now separating these sides? Certainly, there was a feeling that not only was United outplayed and outclassed on Sunday, it has been outspent, too.

Yaya Toure, purchased from European champion Barcelona, and David Silva, bought from Valencia, were superb in City's midfield, making United's Darren Fletcher and the Brazilian Anderson look as thinly spread as butter on toast. One of United's greatest strengths in the Ferguson years has been identifying, nurturing and unleashing young talents like defender Chris Smalling and winger Ashley Young, who both played Sunday.

But United needs a Toure- or Silva-like figure in the middle of the field. With each City goal, not signing World Cup finalist Wesley Sneijder from Inter Milan and letting City lure Samir Nasri from Arsenal looked like larger and larger mistakes.

That City would win never looked in doubt after United's Jonny Evans was sent off for yanking on Mario Balotelli's arm early in the second half.

You should not trust Balotelli with your car or your house, because he's liable to wreck them. Someone - seemingly either him or a friend - set off a firework in his house, causing a fire, in the early hours of Saturday, which certainly is a novel way to prepare for such a match.

But, with a ball at his feet, in front of goal, Balotelli is becoming very dependable. He made the day for headline writers - "Mario Fireworks!" "Burning Balotelli!" - by scoring twice. After the first goal, Balotelli lifted up his jersey to reveal a T-shirt underneath emblazoned with the question "Why always me?"

"He's crazy," City manager Roberto Mancini said. But as long as he scores like this, Balotelli's quirkiness will be secondary.

Mancini, as is customary, brought what he said was a "very good" bottle of wine from his native Italy to share with Ferguson after the game. For the Scotsman, it must have tasted as sour as vinegar.

"It was our worst ever day," Ferguson said. "It's the worst result in my history, ever. Even as a player I don't think I ever lost 6-1."

He added: "You have to recover. The history of Manchester United is 'another day' and we will recover. That kind of defeat will make an impact on the players."

One wouldn't expect anything less of Ferguson's players. But the reality is City now has a five-point league lead over United. Even though the season is still young, United could be chasing blue shirts from now until next May.

Those like European soccer boss Michel Platini who argue the massive deficit spending by clubs like City is a mortal danger to the sport's status quo and overall good health could point to this result, nod wisely, and feel vindicated. City fans could retort that United was long overdue to be knocked off its pedestal. Singing their hearts out in United's ground, they didn't care that this win was bought as much as it was earned.

But being able to purchase some of the world's best players as easily as a kid in a sweet shop is only part of why City is becoming so strong. A lot of the credit goes to Mancini, who is making his big name and big ego stars play and work together as a team. He could have come to Old Trafford looking for a draw, played it safe. Instead, he fielded an attacking lineup with both Balotelli and Sergio Aguero up front. Mancini said studying video of United had shown him that Ferguson's team this season often concedes opportunities to score.

United, vulnerable.

Those are not words that have been used often together in recent years.

That could be about to change.

Mortgage insurer subsidiary seized by regulators (AP)

PHOENIX ? Insurance regulators in Arizona have seized the main subsidiary of private mortgage insurer PMI Group Inc., which will begin paying claims at just 50 percent.

The seizure follows heavy losses at PMI since the housing market bubble burst. Two months ago, state regulators ordered the Arizona-based subsidiary, PMI Mortgage Insurance Co., to stop selling new policies after it came under scrutiny because it didn't have enough money on hand to meet the requirements of regulations in that state.

A statement on PMI's website says a court order, signed by an Arizona Superior Court judge on Thursday, gives Arizona's Department of Insurance full possession and control of the subsidiary. Beginning Monday, PMI says claims will be paid at just 50 percent, in lieu of a moratorium on claim payments. Meanwhile, PMI said it will "continue to support our customers' ongoing policy servicing needs, and loss mitigation programs."

Private mortgage insurance protects lenders from losses if a homeowner defaults and the lender doesn't recoup costs through foreclosure. The insurance costs the borrower a monthly fee, typically a set percentage of the total mortgage loan. Like other mortgage insurers, PMI has been able to sell profitable policies in recent years, but the gains from those sales hasn't outpaced losses from policies sold before the housing market collapsed. As flagging home prices have strapped borrowers, the company has had to pay more claims.

The company's shares have traded below $1 apiece since late July, closing on Friday at 31 cents apiece. PMI shares topped $50 in 2007. Since then, the Walnut Creek, Calif. company has posted more than $3.5 billion in losses due to claims paid out on foreclosed homes. That includes a loss of nearly $135 million for the second quarter. PMI hasn't yet reported third-quarter results.

PMI's CEO, L. Stephen Smith, told analysts in early August that that company has seen a sharp rise in the number of previously denied claims that banks appealed and were able to get reinstated by producing better documents to back up them up.

Smith said then that his company was working with a financial adviser to search for ways to raise capital.

Schlumberger 3Q profit falls 25 pct (AP)

NEW YORK ? Schlumberger Ltd. said Friday that its third-quarter profit fell 25 percent when compared with year-ago results fattened by a $1.27 billion investment gain.

Its adjusted earnings fell short of Wall Street expectations. Shares fell 61 cents to close at $67.38.

The Houston oil services company reported its net income fell to $1.3 billion, or 96 cents per share, for the July-September quarter. That compares with $1.73 billion, or $1.38 per share, a year ago.

Excluding special charges and credits, Schlumberger said income from continuing operations was 98 cents per share.

That fell short of Wall Street estimates. Analysts, who typically exclude special items, had expected adjusted earnings of $1.01 per share.

Revenue rose 49.4 percent to $10.2 billion from $6.85 billion a year ago. That matched Wall Street expectations.

The company said the "current financial turmoil" in the global economy has lowered the outlook for oil demand growth in 2012 although it is still expected to top that of this year.

It said it was "confident that any reductions will be short-lived, and that the outlook for the service industry remains very positive."

What Will Turn Us On in 2030?

Given this short time frame, oil will surely still play a dominant role in the energy marketplace. In two decades, we may achieve greater fuel efficiency with internal-combustion engines, homes may be heated more efficiently, and alternative fuels may have reached the mainstream. But fossil fuels will still power much of the world. A more realistic time frame for a radically different energy landscape may be 50, 80, or even 100 years. Forecasting that far out, though, might be a fool?s errand, as New America Foundation senior research fellow Parag Khanna emphasized in a short video. Predictions of the future often tell us more about the present; we can?t possibly know how technology, or catastrophic global events, will transform the world and our energy needs.

Autistic facial characteristics identified

Thursday, October 20, 2011

The face and brain develop in coordination, with each influencing the other, beginning in the embryo and continuing through adolescence. Now, University of Missouri researchers have found distinct differences between the facial characteristics of children with autism compared to those of typically developing children. This knowledge could help researchers understand the origins of autism.

"There is no clear answer about whether autism is caused by genetics or by environmental influences," said Kristina Aldridge, lead author and assistant professor of anatomy in the MU School of Medicine and the Thompson Center for Autism and Neurodevelopmental Disorders. "If we can identify when these facial changes occur, we could pinpoint when autism may begin to develop in a child. Knowing that point in time could lead us to identify a genetic cause, a window of time when the embryo may be susceptible to an environmental factor, or both."

Aldridge and colleagues found the following distinct differences between facial characteristics of children with autism and those of typically developing children:

  • Children with autism have a broader upper face, including wider eyes.
  • Children with autism have a shorter middle region of the face, including the cheeks and nose.
  • Children with autism have a broader or wider mouth and philtrum ? the divot below the nose, above the top lip.

She says these are subtle differences that will enable researchers to further study people with autism spectrum disorders.

Aldridge analyzed 64 boys with autism and 41 typically developing boys aged eight to 12 years old, using a camera system that captures a 3-D image of each child's head. Then, she mapped 17 points on the face, such as the corner of the eye and the divot in the upper lip. When Aldridge calculated the overall geometry of the face using these points, and compared children with autism and typically developing children, she found statistically significant differences in face shape.

Understanding that people with autism have statistically different facial characteristics enables researchers to focus on the underlying causes of autism, Aldridge said. Additionally, the study identified two groups of children with autism who show further distinct facial traits that occur in children with specific characteristics of autism, such as behavior problems, language level and repetitive behaviors. Identifying these subgroups within the group of children with autism allows better study of these children and why autism is so variable.

"This research would not be possible without the children and their families that participated," Aldridge said. "Their help is key to advancing research and helping us better understand autism, and how to develop better treatments. We are also indebted to the University of Missouri's Thompson Center for Autism and Neurodevelopmental Disorders for their support of this project and the care it provides for children with autism and their families in Missouri."

The study was published in Molecular Autism. Aldridge collaborated with Ian George, a graduate student in the School of Medicine; Kimberly Cole, a research technician at the School of Medicine; Jordan Austin, a senior in the College of Arts and Science; T. Nicole Takahashi, project director at the Thompson Center for Autism and Neurodevelopmental Disorders; Ye Duan, associate professor of computer science in the College of Engineering and the Thompson Center; Judith Miles, professor emerita in the School of Medicine and the Thompson Center. The entire team is affiliated with the Thompson Center. This research was supported by an Autism Spectrum Disorder Research Program grant, the Simons Foundation and the Thompson Center Research Scholar Funds.

(AP) ? Mark Sanchez was all smiles in front of his locker for the first time in weeks, knowing exactly what this win meant for the New York Jets.

"We're back on track," the relieved quarterback declared.

Crisis averted. Season saved.

With their locker room beginning to unravel because of mounting losses and infighting, Rex Ryan and his feuding Jets ended a three-game skid with a 24-6 victory over the winless Miami Dolphins on Monday night.

"Hey, we needed a win in the worst way," Ryan said. "I'm just happy that we found a way to get one."

This victory was far from pretty or convincing. But it didn't need to be. It only needed to not be another loss. After all, the Jets (3-3) came in as a team in turmoil, and a fourth straight loss ? especially against the lowly Dolphins ? could be catastrophic.

"The guys came together and we knew coming into this week," wide receiver Santonio Holmes said, "that we couldn't allow an 0-4 team to come in here and get a victory."

Darrelle Revis turned the momentum in the Jets' favor when he ran back the first of his two interceptions 100 yards for a touchdown late in the opening quarter and helped New York do just enough to avoid its first four-game skid under Ryan. Sanchez threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Holmes and ran for another score as the Jets ? who called this a "must-win" game ? capped a rough week by sending the Dolphins to their fifth straight loss.

"Losing was tough," Revis said. "It was hard coming to work. We wanted to get this win. We came in with a great game plan and guys stuck together."

There were some serious doubts whether that would be the case, though.

With frustration quickly spreading throughout the locker room, New York traded wide receiver Derrick Mason to Houston for what the team said was a lack of production. Then, the Jets had to deal with some infighting as Holmes called out the offensive line for not giving Sanchez enough time to throw deep. Right guard Brandon Moore fired back, saying those comments could have a "fragmenting effect" and were not what a captain, which Holmes is, should do.

Ryan, who insisted his team's Super Bowl hopes would not be undone by locker room disharmony, even sent Holmes and Moore out as the captains for the pregame coin toss.

"It was good," Holmes said. "We both looked each other in the eye and said, 'Let's go. It's time to play some football.'"

Turns out, this game against the Dolphins (0-5) came at just the right time. Next up for New York: the San Diego Chargers (4-1) on Sunday, with a chance to head into the off week on a high note.

"In every locker room, things like this happen," Ryan said. "Trust me, we're past that thing. It's unfortunate that it happened. We're chasing a much bigger thing than that. We're moving forward."

Meanwhile, the Dolphins are 0-5 to start a season for the second time in five years, and things are looking an awful lot like 2007 ? when Miami went 1-15. The heat on Dolphins coach Tony Sparano could intensify now.

"It's tough right now," said wide receiver Brandon Marshall, who had six catches for 109 yards. "When you lose, everything looks bad. It's a nasty feeling in the building and a nasty feeling every day. The only thing we can do is fight to get a win."

Marshall didn't even live up to his promise late last week that he would get ejected sometime in the second quarter. He also said he might even start a fight with Jets linebacker Bart Scott or cornerback Antonio Cromartie.

It was all talk.

But that's what many fans and media were thinking the struggling Jets were, too. And New York did little to convince them otherwise while the Dolphins got on the scoreboard first on Dan Carpenter's 23-yard field goal midway through the opening quarter.

The night appeared to be taking an awful turn for the Jets when they lost the ensuing kickoff when it bounced off blocker Garrett McIntyre ? standing in front of returner Joe McKnight ? and was recovered by Austin Spitler.

But three plays later, Matt Moore threw at Marshall in the end zone and Revis stepped in front of the pass and returned it untouched 100 yards to make it 7-3.

"That's exactly what we needed on defense, to set the tone early," Cromartie said.

The return tied for the longest in franchise history, first set by Aaron Glenn in 1996, also against Miami. It was also the longest interception runback in the league this season.

Moore, starting for the injured Chad Henne, was 16 of 34 for 204 yards and two interceptions.

"It's rough, kind of the same old story, trying to find answers and make plays down there in the red zone and we seem to hit a wall," Moore said. "Just got to keep going."

The Jets opened with four straight three-and-outs for the second consecutive game before getting things going late in the first half. On third-and-9 from the Jets 20, Jeremy Kerley caught a 14-yard pass for New York's initial first down of the game, with 6:17 left in the half.

Then, the offense started clicking with a few long drives. Holmes' 38-yard grab early in the fourth quarter sealed it after Sanchez bought some time with his feet and found the receiver, who easily outran linebacker Cameron Wake and made a few nice moves on his way into the end zone to put New York up 24-6.

"What happened last week was last week," Holmes said. "We're looking forward and ahead."

Sanchez finished 14 of 25 for 201 yards and the touchdown pass to Holmes, and Shonn Greene ran for 74 yards on 21 carries.

"To think that guys were upset or had it out for each other, that's crazy," Sanchez said. "Not here, not with Rex. I knew it was something that would pass, something we'd laugh off. Just getting a win changes everything."

Notes: Dolphins RB Reggie Bush left in the third quarter with his right arm hanging at his side ? it was announced as a neck injury. He had 71 yards rushing and two catches for 7 yards. ... Cromartie said he pulled himself out of the game late with a groin strain, but will definitely play against the Chargers. ... The Jets finished 6 of 15 on third down, while the Dolphins were just 2 of 13. ... The Jets sacked Moore four times, including two by LB Calvin Pace.
