How The Current Economy Impacts Holiday Shoppers | Internet ...

American?s confidence in the overall U. S. Economy is shaky. A recent Gallup poll showed eight in ten people believe the country is in a second recession. The current economic climate influences consumer?s spending habits. And this will naturally impact their holiday spending during the biggest shopping season of the year.

With retailers depending on holiday sales for a significant portion of their profits, they are looking for novel ways to appeal to consumers. The idea is that once customers are inside the store for the original bargain, they will buy even more items. This holds true for both the physical stores and the online sites.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday bargains appeal to a great many holiday shoppers. Some Black Friday sales are beginning even earlier this year. A lot of consumers have begun their holiday gift purchasing early, and expect to find special deals during the entire, lengthened holiday season.

A large percentage of shoppers use the internet to find good deals, to compare sales prices, and to figure out what they want to buy. E-retail is popular for with a number of customers. It?s easier and more convenient in several ways.

Online shopping eliminates the hassle of dealing with traffic and crowded stores. It?s much quicker than driving to the mall and saves gas money. Websites are available anytime of the day or night. Promo codes are often available for extra savings plus free or discounted shipping is sometimes provided.

The internet provides access to stores not available around the shopper?s local area; or to merchandise not stocked in stores; and to a variety of different market places all over the world. Thrifty consumers can more easily search for bargains and save with coupons or promo codes. And they can take advantage of commonly offered free or discounted shipping deals.

This season, concerned shoppers will be sticking to reasonably strict budgets and avoiding superfluous spending. They plan to use cash or debit cards when possible as a way to prevent reckless purchases. And thrifty shoppers will limit their credit card use to steer clear of adding any extra debt.

Keeping budgets in mind, many people are paring down their gift lists and avoiding frivolous purchases. Studies show shoppers generally spend 20 to 40 percent more with a credit card than with cash. Most likely this means more purchases will be made with cash to avoid both potential extravagance and credit card debt. In these current economic times, holiday spenders are on the lookout for more innovative ways to save money.

You can find details about the benefits of online shopping and tips on how to get great deals in gifts and gadgets, now.

Qualcomm handily beats Street, shares rise (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Qualcomm Inc's quarterly profit easily beat Wall Street forecasts and the wireless chip leader raised its full-year financial targets due to growing demand for smartphones such as Apple Inc's popular iPhone.

Shares in the biggest supplier of cellphone chips rose 5 percent after the company also said it has been winning business from rivals and is benefiting from growing demand for smartphones in emerging markets such as China.

Qualcomm, widely known as the main wireless chip supplier for the latest iPhone, was helped by the launch of the blockbuster device late last year, analysts said.

"It's a very strong result. The move to smartphones in the emerging markets in the success of the iPhone is driving its earnings higher," Canaccord Genuity analyst Mike Walkley said.

He said Qualcomm also generates hefty technology royalties from Apple, which does not disclose its chip suppliers.

Qualcomm appears to be taking business from rivals such as STMicroelectronics and Intel Corp, whose Infineon chip business has been a big supplier for the iPhone, Walkley said.

The company raised its revenue target for full-year 2012 to a range of $18.7 billion to $19.7 billion from its previous target of $18 billion to $19 billion.

Qualcomm also said it expects full-year earnings per share, excluding unusual items, of $3.55 to $3.75, up from its previous forecast for $3.42 to $3.62.

For its first fiscal quarter Qualcomm's earnings, excluding unusual items, of 97 cents per share were well ahead of Wall Street expectations for 90 cents according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

DISMISSES MARGIN CONCERNS

But even as they applauded the strong results and outlook, analysts on Qualcomm's conference questioned the company's ability to maintain profitability in its chip business since it faces pressure to cut chip prices as much of its growth is coming from phones that use less expensive chips.

Qualcomm Chief Financial Officer William Keitel said the company typically reduces chip prices for its customers every first quarter, noting that this would happen again this period.

But he said high sales volumes in countries like China will continue to offset lower prices and profit margins in these markets, ensuring revenue and earnings growth for at least the next five years for Qualcomm.

"That concern's been there three years now but each year investors have been pleasantly surprised," Keitel told Reuters. There's so much volume opportunity in the emerging markets what we're seeing is that the volume upside is more than compensating for the revenue and margin pressure."

While Qualcomm is seeing some pullback in smartphone demand in Europe, because of economic concerns there, the company said it is seeing strong growth in markets such the United States, Japan and South Korea.

In particular the company expects strong growth in these markets from smartphones using Long Term Evolution, an emerging high-speed wireless technology. Qualcomm expects LTE to represent a third of Qualcomm chip shipments by year-end, according to Keitel.

"They're in the right place at the right time on three major trends," Snyder said, referring to Qualcomm's strong position in China, in the market for LTE chips, and with Apple.

REGULATORY CORRUPTION PROBE

On the conference call Chief Executive Paul Jacobs also disclosed that U.S. and California regulators are investigating whether Qualcomm complies with the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. But investors appeared to shrug off the announcement after Jacobs said he is confident the company is in compliance.

The preliminary investigation, which Qualcomm learned about January 27, was included in the company's quarterly report in a section discussing a whistleblower case brought against Qualcomm in 2010. Keitel would not discuss the case further.

San Diego, California-based Qualcomm reported a profit of$1.395 billion, or 81 cents per share, for its fiscal first quarter ended December 25, compared with a profit of $1.17 billion, or 71 cents per share, in the year-ago quarter.

Revenue rose to $4.68 billion from $3.35 billion, and compared with Wall Street expectations of $4.58 billion according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

In November, Qualcomm had forecast first-quarter revenue of $4.35 billion to $4.75 billion and first-quarter net earnings per share of 70 cents to 76 cents.

Qualcomm shares rose 5 percent to $62.58 in late trade after closing at $59.56 in the regular Nasdaq session.

Russia says U.N. must rule out Syria intervention (Reuters)

MOSCOW (Reuters) ? Russia signaled on Wednesday it would veto a draft U.N. resolution calling on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down unless it explicitly ruled out military intervention in the bloodshed touched off by protests against his rule.

Escalating violence in Syria has killed thousands of people and activists say Assad's forces have stepped up operations against opposition strongholds across the country this week, from the Damascus suburbs to the cities of Hama and Homs and the border provinces of Deraa and Idlib.

Arab and Western states urged the U.N. Security Council on Tuesday to act swiftly on a resolution calling for Assad to delegate powers to his deputy and defuse the 11-month-old uprising against his family's dynastic rule.

But Moscow's envoy to the European Union, Vladimir Chizhov, said there was no chance the Western-Arab draft text could be accepted unless it precisely rejected armed intervention.

The draft "is missing the most important thing: a clear clause ruling out the possibility that the resolution could be used to justify military intervention in Syrian affairs from outside. For this reason I see no chance this draft could be adopted," said Chizhov, Russia's envoy to the European Union.

Russia and China, both veto-wielding Security Council members, have resisted a Western push for a resolution condemning the Syrian government's crackdown on unrest.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said the resolution could not be used to authorize military intervention and his French counterpart Alain Juppe said such an idea was a myth.

But Chizhov's remarks suggested Moscow, a close strategic ally and important arms supplier to Syria during its 42 years in the grip of the Assad family, would not accept such assurances.

Russia says the West exploited fuzzy wording in a March 2011 U.N. Security Council resolution on Libya to turn a mandate to protect civilians in the North African country's popular uprising into a push for regime change - backed by NATO air strikes - that led to the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi.

"CONCRETE ECONOMIC PRESSURE"

Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim, who has led the Arab League's efforts to tackle the Syrian crisis, attempted to allay Moscow and Beijing's objections, saying it was trying to avoid a Libyan-style foreign role.

"We are not calling for foreign intervention," he said. "We are advocating the exertion of concrete economic pressure so that the Syrian regime might realize that it is imperative to meet the demands of its people."

But he also warned the 15-member Security Council that Syria's "killing machine is still at work."

Syrian insurgents said Assad's forces extended a military sweep overnight around Damascus to counter a rebel threat that had reached the gates of the sprawling capital.

A statement by a local rebel group in Damascus province said more troops and armor were moving into eastern suburbs and in the mountainous Qalamoun area north of Damascus, which Assad's forces took over this week.

There were army snipers in the suburb of Misraba, which has had no electricity or water for a week. Activists reported shops closed, a lack of basic supplies, and tanks in the streets.

North of Damascus, armored troops controlled the town of Rankous and began extending their control into farmland surrounding it, bombarding the village of Telfita overnight, according to opposition activists.

In the Wadi Barada area on the edge of the capital, four people were killed in a tank bombardment on Wednesday morning to flush out rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA) units operating near the capital, activists said.

It was not possible to verify the reports as Syria restricts access for independent media.

"The Free Syrian Army has withdrawn but will be back," said Fawaz Tello, a Syrian opposition figure who left for Cairo a few days ago. "The crackdown will only swell its ranks of professional soldiers (and) conscripts."

CALL FOR ACTION

Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Elaraby called on the U.N. Security Council to take "rapid and decisive action" by approving the resolution.

"Do not let the Syrian people down in its plight," he said.

The United States strongly endorsed the appeal from the Arab League and Qatar for "rapid and decisive action," but China reiterated its reservations.

"China is firmly opposed to the use of force to solve the Syrian problem and resolutely opposes pushing for forced regime change in Syria, as it violates the United Nations Charter and the basic norms guiding the practice of international relations," Xinhua news agency quoted Chinese Ambassador to the United Nations Li Baodong as telling the Security Council.

Syrian U.N. Ambassador Bashar Ja'afari rejected the suggestion his government was responsible for the crisis, and accused Western powers of dreaming of "the return of colonialism and hegemony" in the Middle East.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the policy of isolation and seeking regime change risked igniting a "much bigger drama" in the Middle East.

"The people who are obsessed with removing regimes in the region, they should be really thinking about the broader picture. And I'm afraid that if this vigor to change regimes persists, we are going to witness a very bad situation much, much, much broader than just Syria, Libya, Egypt or any other single country."

PowerDVD 12 brings syncing and transcoding for mobile devices

It's been less than a year since CyberLink revealed PowerDVD 11 and now along comes PowerDVD 12. Among the new features in 12 is the ability to sync media -- we can only assume this excludes protected content -- to PowerDVD Mobile for Android as well as automatically transcode videos for most of the popular mobile devices. Said mobile clients are only free, though, if you opt of the $99 Ultra version of PowerDVD. PowerDVD Mobile is available for everyone else for $19.99, as well as PowerDVD Remote for $4.99. Overall it seems like an iterative update that might not hit the spot at $45 (for an upgrade), but there are other new features like OGG and FLAC support that might just push you over the edge.

(AP) ? Real estate mogul and reality show star Donald Trump intends to endorse Gingrich's GOP presidential bid, according to a source close to Gingrich's campaign.

Trump is set to announce his support Thursday in Las Vegas, where Gingrich is campaigning in advance of Nevada's Republican caucuses on Saturday.

Trump's backing would bring the former House speaker a blitz of media attention heading into the contest and following his defeat in Florida.

Trump announced Wednesday that he was to make news in the presidential race but did not say what it was.

Asked about the possible endorsement Wednesday in Reno, Nev., Gingrich said he had "no idea what the Donald is going to do."

"He is always interesting," Gingrich said of Trump. "And I don't know of anybody who does a better job of getting attention by announcing that he will presently announce something."

Gingrich sought Trump's endorsement at a meeting in December at the real estate mogul's Trump Tower office in Manhattan. There, Gingrich told reporters he had persuaded Trump to mentor promising children from some of New York's poorest schools.

The former House speaker had come under fire for suggesting poor children should do janitorial chores in their schools to learn the value of work.

Gingrich also agreed to appear in a Republican debate Trump was to host in Iowa in December. But other candidates, including frontrunner Mitt Romney, turned down the debate, forcing Trump to cancel.

Trump had flirted with the idea of jumping in the presidential race as a third-party candidate but ultimately decided not to.

Appearing on CBS' "Face The Nation" on Sunday, Trump praised Gingrich.

"He's got great ideas. He's very smart, he's very tough and he is a great debater," he said.

Gingrich was pounded by Romney in Florida in Tuesday's Republican primary. Romney is considered a heavy favorite in Nevada, a state he won when he sought the GOP nomination in 2008.?

The source was not authorized to speak for the campaign and spoke on condition of anonymity. The endorsement was first reported by KLAS-TV in Las Vegas.

Helicopters Are About to Get Faster Thanks to Humpback Whale Fins [Helicopters]

A helicopter's rotor design may allow for vertical takeoffs but that comes at a price—the backwards moving blade counteracts the helicopter's forward momentum, causing it to stall at high speeds. But one German firm believes that outfitting the blades with bumps inspired by the fins of humpback whales will speed whirly-bird flights significantly. More »
