Tug pilot pleads guilty in Philly duck boat crash (AP)
PHILADELPHIA ? A tug operator consumed by a family emergency pleaded guilty Monday to involuntary manslaughter for a fatal crash with a duck boat filled with tourists, an accident he acknowledged was caused largely by his continuous use of a cellphone and laptop computer while he was steering a barge.
Pilot Matt Devlin said he "didn't really make the best decisions" aboard the tug after learning that his 5-year-old son had suffered life-threatening complications during routine eye surgery. His distraction ultimately resulted in the barge plowing into the duck boat on the Delaware River, killing two Hungarian students.
"I wish I could take it all back ... I just wasn't thinking clearly after getting that news," Devlin said during a federal court hearing.
The remarks by Devlin, 35, of Catskill, N.Y., were his first public statements since the crash last summer involving the tug Caribbean Sea, the barge Resource and the duck boat, an amphibious tourist vehicle.
The accident occurred in Philadelphia on July 7, 2010, after the duck boat stalled in the busy shipping channel. As it sat anchored, awaiting help, the barge began bearing down and Devlin didn't respond to distress calls because he had silenced the radios to talk on the phone, authorities said.
Devlin had learned shortly before the crash that his son had been deprived of oxygen for about eight minutes during surgery. He then repeatedly made and received calls on his phone, surfed the Internet for medical information and moved to a lower wheelhouse for more privacy ? putting the duck boat in his blind spot, according to a report by the National Transportation Safety Board.
"I believe that took away the best view," Devlin said Monday.
The crash sent all 37 people on the duck boat into the river, but 16-year-old Dora Schwendtner and 20-year-old Szabolcs Prem never resurfaced. The Hungarians were visiting the United States through a church exchange program; their families have filed wrongful-death lawsuits.
Devlin was charged with misconduct of a ship operator causing death, a maritime offense that authorities describe as the equivalent of involuntary manslaughter. As a condition of the plea agreement, he also surrendered his Coast Guard license. He faces 37 to 46 months in prison under federal sentencing guidelines.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Zauzmer described the medical emergency as "a legitimate personal crisis" and called Devlin "very remorseful." Still, he said Devlin should have handled it better.
"What he needed to do, obviously, was turn over his duties to the captain of the ship and not try to deal with two things at the same time," Zauzmer said after the hearing.
Devlin's lawyer, Frank DeSimone, stressed said that his client wasn't talking "frivolously" on his cellphone. Although Devlin's son, now 6, has fully recovered, at the time Devlin thought the boy might die or suffer brain damage, DeSimone said.
"As soon as he was told about what happened to his son, he was in a fog," DeSimone said.
The attorney said Devlin has repeated nightmares about the crash. Devlin himself said in court that he's been seeing a psychiatrist, is on medication and has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.
Devlin shared an emotional hug with his wife after the hearing. He declined to comment and was released on bond pending sentencing Nov. 1.
Georgia-based Ride the Ducks offers tours in Philadelphia; San Francisco; Branson, Mo.; Stone Mountain, Ga.; and the Cincinnati area.
The company suspended its Philadelphia tours after the accident but resumed them this spring, albeit with a shortened water route. The boats did not operate on the anniversary of the crash.

Young People Abandoning Obama, Democrats Over Economic, Cultural Issues (ContributorNetwork)
COMMENTARY | As President Barack Obama contemplates his prospects for the 2012 election, he surely must be anxious about the fact that a key constituency that helped to elect him is 2008, young people, are abandoning him in droves, according to Michael Barone.
This phenomenon was apparent in the 2010 midterm elections as the youth vote abandoned the Democrats, thanks to the weak economy and poor job prospects, Barone reports that this process is accelerating and deepening.
In 2008, the Pew Poll indicated that millennial voters, those younger than 30, voted 66 percent to 32 percent for Obama and self-identified as Democrat by a 60 percent to 32 percent margin. In 2009, the Democratic edge in white millennials had dropped from seven points to three. By 2010 white millennials had moved into the Republicans by one point. In 2011 the Republican edge among this group had lengthened to 11 points.
The abandonment of President Obama and the Democrats by young people can be easily explained by the economy. Two and a half years after cheering themselves hoarse and fainting in the aisles for Obama, scenes lovingly described by Jason Mattera in his book "Obama Zombies," young people are more often than not living with their parents, working at menial jobs if they are working at all, and wondering if they should just stay in school until things get better.
Barone also suggests a more cultural divide between the millennial generation and the Obama style of governance.
"In the wake of the 2008 election, I argued that there was a tension between the way millennials lived their lives -- creating their own iPod playlists, designing their own Facebook pages -- and the one-size-fits-all, industrial-era welfare-state policies of the Obama Democrats.
"Instead of allowing millennials space in which they can choose their own futures, the Obama Democrats' policies have produced a low-growth economy in which their alternatives are limited and they are forced to make do with what they can scrounge."
This provides an opportunity for Obama's Republican opponent, so long as his or her campaign emphasizes economic freedom and self reliance, which will likely be the case since economic rather than social issues seem to be dominating the run up to the 2012 presidential campaign.
Which Republican candidate would best appeal to the youth vote? That remains to be seen, but it is very clear that the romance is over with Barack Obama.

Power of the subconscious mind - Internet Business Productivity
??Back to blog home page
"Sleep over it"
In my?other post?I focused on preparing a list of things to do for tomorrow? so that our subconscious mind can "digest" it overnight while we sleep. It's amazing how much clarity we have the next morning. But it's more than that - the same goes to any problem we have. The saying to "sleep over it" applies to almost any tough decision, that's why it's crucial not to let the emotions take charge and really "sleep over" some of the most important decisions in your life.
Learning new languages? subconsciously
I'm now studying Japanese. I know it sounds totally crazy. I speak my mother tongue (Polish) and English, German and Spanish? it's just one more, right? Well, the problem is, that Japanese is so different. It doesn't come in any way from Latin or Germanic languages, so it's a totally new thing.
I started learning by listening to an audio-course (Pimsleur) and watching Hollywood movies I knew with Japanese audio-tracks (I didn't find many of those, unfortunately). The cool thing is that although between my last two trips to Japan I didn't find lots of time to actively learn, the listening part proved to be incredible.
When I came back to Japan in June, I started understanding more. Somehow listening to the conversations was more fruitful? I was very often able to figure out what the people around me were talking about (in Japanese!) and join in the conversation (unfortunately still in English) to the astonishment of my Japanese friends.
You see, although before my trip I was just listening without actively learning the language, my mind was learning. Subconsciously. Amazingly.
Projecting goals
The last thing I wanted to mention here is the thing about goals. Many "motivational books" tell you to project yourself in the future. To see how you want to be in a few years. What kind of life you're going to have. I thought exercises like these were ridiculous. Now I know for a fact they are not.
These "gurus" ask you to project your goals - to picture them. To see them. Why? So that they become more real to you and they sink in your memory. Why? Because then your mind will help you make good decisions.
That's right. Depending on what you want to be, your mind will subconsciously help you decide one way or the other. I know. I was surprised over the last few years how I was able to decide quickly on some really important things? because my mind new exactly where I was going.
Your subconscious mind is really powerful.
Use it, you'll be blown away. Train your mind, let it do some heavy-lifting for you, let it work to help you become a better person. I'm still amazed how little we know about our minds and how great a work they do for us.
Do you train your mind? Do you let it work? How?

?EGG? Salad Sandwiches (yes, vegetarian) ? Better Catch It
Every Friday a fellow blogger Gayle Bryant over at www.grocerycartchallenge.blogspot.com? has a recipe exchange.? I?like to contribute tasty vegetarian recipes from my grandmothers recipe files.
To skip ramblings, please scroll down for recipe.?
Back in the 50?s and 60?s tofu wasn?t in the vegetarian mainstream, or if it was, we didn?t know about it.? I think the first time?I tried it was in 1972.??A granola type fellow that had moved to our area turned us on to the whole soybean idea.?
I didn?t like it.? It tasted like water to me and why on earth should I drink water when I can drink koolaid?
Well, grandma was intrigued by this food source that was supposed to provide so much protein and fiber.? she went right to work concocting recipes with this white meaty looking stuff.?
???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
?? Most were terrible.?
Grandma was trying to use the tofu as an ingredient that would provide flavor but in reality the tofu would take on whatever flavor you were adding to it.? This in turn diluted whatever seasonings you put in the dish.? Hence, a very bland meal.?
One day when she was making egg salad sandwiches she look at me and said:? What if I used the tofu for the eggs??? This ended up as one of the few tofu recipes I would eat back then.?
Now of course, soy is shoved?down our throats by lobbyists.? The data on this wonder food is that it should no longer ?be relied upon as a food source.? I just say:? stay informed and make your own decisions.?
????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? ?Egg? Salad Sandwiches
1 package of firm tofu drained??????????????????????????????????????? 1 red bell pepper finely chopped
1 carrot grated????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? 3 green onions finely chopped
2 tbls pickle chopped????????????????????????????????????????????????????1/4 tsp salt or more to taste
4 tbls?mayonaise????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? 1 tsp mustard
dash of pepper????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? shredded lettuce
In bowl combine all ingredients except lettuce.? Adjust seasonings to your own taste.
Let mixture sit for at least one hour so flavor can absorb into tofu.
Spread mixture onto a nice dense grain bread.? Top with lettuce. and remaining bread slice.
??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? ? ENJOY??
