Hi Corbett Field -- home to the Colorado Rockies' spring training facilities before the 2011 season -- is home to the Arizona Wildcats baseball team and it will host a Super Regional this weekend between the home team and the St. John's Red Storm. This best-of-three series begins on Friday.
Arizona (41-17) went 3-0 during regional play at Hi Corbett Field, knocking off Missouri and Louisville twice while averaging nearly 16 runs per game. That offense had four players drafted earlier this week, including St. Louis Cardinals fourth-rounder SS Alex Mejia (.367/.398/.504, 51 RBI) and New York Yankees second-rounder RF Robert Refsnyder (.353 BA, 6 HR, 61 RBI). Sophomore LF Johnny Field leads the team with a .389 batting average. Right-handed pitcher Kurt Heyer (St. Louis Cardinals, 6th round) leads the pitching staff with a 12-2 record and a 2.03 ERA. He has thrown seven complete games so far.
The Red Storm (40-21) feature two Colorado Rockies draft picks, the brother of a former first-round draft pick and a second-round draft pick. Infielder Matt Wessinger went to the Rockies in the fifth round and is hitting .353/.442/.492 with six home runs and 47 RBI. Just one round later, RHP Matt Carasiti joined Wessinger as a Rockies draft pick. Carasiti is 7-5 with a 3.98 ERA in 18 games (14 starts). Kyle Hansen, brother of Craig Hansen, also went in the sixth round while outfielder Jeremy Baltz went to the San Diego Padres in the second round.
